A gem of a zoo for young and old - a must visit if you love animals
Brilliant zoo, we visited 3pm on a Saturday in bright sunny weather. Zoo not crowded and still caught the penguins being fed. So close to all the animals, easy to spot and active. The walkthrough houses are amazing, butterflies everywhere you looked. The fruit bats were fab, one hanging right in front of us and stretching their wings. A lovely zoo guide there to point out if you have trouble spotting them. You can see the elephants in their shed and they also have a great open area to roam. Lots of new developments which I’m sure will add lots more to the quality of the zoo experience. Favourite moment, sitting drinking coffee and watching the penguins 🐧 Tips I’m sure children would love the zoo as the animals are not behind huge fences Book online to save money Note toilets we used were unisex, a little hard to find but clean and tidy.

    Amsterdam Royal Zoo. The Netherlands.
Amsterdam Royal Zoo and other photos. Artis or Natura Artis Magistra is a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest zoos of Europe. Artis contains a zoo, an aquarium and a planetarium. The Royal Zoo also has an arboretum and a fairly large art collection. A part of the art collection is on display in the Aquarium building of the Zoo. Artis has 27 monumental buildings, most of which are used as enclosures for animals and it makes Artis a unique cultural heritage of the 19th century. We visited The Artis on a rainy day, but we were so surprised and had so wonderful time in the Zoo, that we even enjoyed the rain and it added a charm to our visiting Amsterdam Royal Zoo. Many and birds animals are freely walking on the open territory of the Zoo or inside special houses and people are allowed to touch some of them (the most people-friendly of them).

    Great Zoo don't miss it
This is a great place to spend a few hours. Really easy to walk around. It's much bigger thank you think. The Butterfly section is incredible. Lots of different animals here. Went to Micropia after the zoo, which is next door. Well worth a visit. Really recommend going to the Zoo, one of tge best I've visited.

    Lovely visit
Was in Amsterdam for the weekend and this was on the itinerary. It is a really clean and tidy zoo. In the middle of a built up area but the grounds are really lovely. Found it easy navigating on the transport app and Google maps. We had breakfast before entering so didn’t have any food/drinks whilst visiting. Some of the enclosures do look small the lions, elephant, giraffe and the jaguar ones. I’m not sure what soo regulations are in terms of space needed but would it not meet requirements? Unsure I’m not an expert. The jaguar was making sad noises almost distressed? Didn’t speak to any staff apart from scanning tickets in on the way in so unable to comment on their friendliness and knowledge regarding the animals.

    Great zoo.
We really enjoyed this zoo. So clean and plenty of animals. Lions looked a bit cramped but they're getting a new enclosure built. Lots to see and wasn't too busy. I was there with my partner but my children would have loved here. A few play areas for them and lots to keep you busy for the day. Worth the money.

    Great day out
The zoo takes really good care of the animals which was very nice to see. There were a lot of different sections/exhibits to look at. Really enjoyed it. It was great to see the information on each animal on the enclosure. It was a good walk around the whole zoo but the views were worth it. Plenty of places to get food and drinks on the way around too.

    Super relaxing Park/Zoo
Such a lovely atmosphere here, it wasn't crazy busy and noisy so we strolled around looking at very chilled and contented animals in a really lovely setting. Easy to get lunch and plenty of tables to choose from. For a few hours away from the busy streets of Amsterdam I would highly recommend a visit.

    Worth a visit
We’ve been a couple times now to this zoo and it’s a really nice day out. It’s very green and there’s lots to see. My favourite animals were the giraffes and elephants. As you can expect, the drinks and food are really expensive but you can take your own in. Bottles of 500ml Pepsi were €4 and water bottles were €3 ish although you can get tap water for free!

    Great for all ages !
My fiancé and I went here on a Thursday and loved it! The open spaces and greenery of the zoo were beautiful to see. The staff were also very friendly in pointing out the animals and giving us directions. We loved as well that many of the animals are in large enclosures and are free to roam as much as possible. Would definitely return :)

An excellent collection of animals, insects, etc. All housed in interesting and suitable conditions. Overall the collection was in well kept and historic parkland.
Choice of eating facilities, enjoyed both lunch and a final cup of tea and cake.
The zoo particularly appeared to cater for families, discovery activities, etc. A playground for children within the zoo offered relaxing fun.

This is probably the best zoo I've visited, beautiful grounds and buildings and the way it's set up makes you feel much closer to the animals than other zoos allow although it helped that it was quiet when we visited.

A great range of animals, some of which are not on display in many other zoos. Some areas looked a little neglected or not overly-friendly to the actual animals on display (time to make it more about the animals and less about the visitors).
We went in winter and the selection of food available was somewhat disappointing (not all cafes were open).

We spent a couple of hours walking round the zoo and it really was a delight.

There are lots of animals, all in a fabulous setting. We enjoyed watching the gorilla’s, they were content in eating their way into their enrichment. It must have been some kind of sweet/savoury liquid, it was encased in a flat tube and they had to use a piece of stick to get to their reward.

The jaguar gave us a right fright as we walked down a dark passageway to see it walking towards us! We couldn’t see the glass, but were very happy when we did!

We would have stayed longer but it absolutely chucked it down.

Definitely recommend.

And what a great idea of the little pull along trucks for little ones to sit in whilst going round the zoo! Genius!

Going in the winter isn't brilliant. Also went not long after opening time which was probably a mistake. A lot of the animals still indoors and there's no access to the public for most of the enclosures. Spent a couple of hours there and was only able to see about 50% of the animals. But most importantly, they all looked well cared for and had a good amount of space to move around.

I'm glad we visited this zoo. It's small but well laid out. On the day we visited it was raining rather heavily, so it wasn't too busy. There are lots of animals to see, and the ones we saw all looked well cared for and happy. Because of the weather there were some 'no shows' but who can blame them for not wanting to come outside in the rain! The aquarium is undergoing renovation atm, so that wasn't open. We took shelter in the small mammals walk through, which didn't disappoint. We had lunch too, which was reasonable and filling. All in all I would definitely recommend this zoo for a visit. Good value for money.

This little zoo was a revelation. Ignore any reviews here which describe it as sad or horrid. The zoo is a historic one, which sits in beautifully landscaped gardens. The animal enclosures are spacious and well designed on the whole. We visited on a freezing cold January day, but almost all the animals were visible and active and none of them looked stressed or uncomfortable in any way. The sea lions were particularly entertaining, the elephants were playing, the lions were doing what lions do ( lying around) and the giraffes were feeding happily. There is a good selection of animals, reptiles and birds on display and an added bonus was the sight of hundreds of wild herons and cormorants using the trees around the zoo as nesting areas.
The zoo wasn’t crowded ( probably because of the weather) but there were a couple of school groups there. However they were so well hidden by the layout of the place that you would not have known.
Good cafe and shop!

The partner and I enjoyed our time here. Plenty of Animals to be seen who were very socialable. They were not afraid to make themselves seen or heard.

The layout was surprisingly good. I felt like I managed to see everything without having to go back on myself or go in different directions. The staff on hand were helpful. They even kindly held our bags somewhere safe so we could explore.

Elephants and Giraffes were a fun highlight.

A lovely small and gorgeous zoo. It was lightly raining but it was still fairly crowded. The animals seemed happy and had space to roam. It was small and well designed. We were happy to be staying where we could walk over and enjoy this special place on our last day. It's worth a visit!

Brilliant zoo, loads of cool animals and attractions.

Although it was December and cold, most of the animals could easily be seen.

Butterfly house and the seals were easily our favourite's, could watch them for hours.

Reasonably priced, would definitely return again.
