Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the oldest cemetery in Halifax and no doubt one of if not the oldest in Canada. Located in downtown it is surrounded by modern life yet the tombstones show their age and the names on many are faded. Nice to see that it has been preserved and not paved over by some developer.

Such a beautiful cemetery! It was incredible to be back in time and see the age of the tombstones. I loved just wandering around and I even found some possible distant relatives! Definitely want to visit again to read more of the graves

This historic site of the Halifax first cemetery was initiated in 1749 and was turned over to St Paul’s Anglican Church in 1793. After it was closed in 1844, the site deteriorated, and restoration began in the 1980s. More than 12,000 were interred here, but only ~1,300 headstones remain [wooden markers long since decayed]. It is a hallowed ground to “Restore, Remember, Reflect.” Many notable people were interred here and some of the markers are magnificent, as depicted by the accompanying photos.

Stopped in briefly on our walkabout. Very old stones. Most are not readable. Explanatory signs and plaques. An old Archway with a lion on top. Two large churches at two outside corners.

We walked by this corner in downtown Halifax several times. Finally decided to pop in and read some of the info signs. Very interesting to learn about the history of the cemetery as well as many of the people buried here.

Also interesting to walk around and read the headstones. Peaceful way to spend some time.

I remembered going to this graveyard when I was a kid doing a school field trip and on this visit to Halifax we visited it again. This will be on our “must do” while in Halifax list for years to come. We visited on a mild December day and spent a good 40 minutes just walking around looking at all the headstones. You could definitely spend more or less time here depending on how interested you are/how much time you have to spend. It is free entry but you may have to pay for street parking pending when you visit. There are a lot of very very old graves and they are interesting to check out. Some of them are so old you can’t even read what they say anymore. This would be a great outing for any age as long as you have good mobility. If you are in a wheelchair or have a stroller you will most likely have to stay on the gravel paths. Can not wait to visit again.
