My wife and I drove up for sunrise. We got a spot on the lotto, but be aware tickets seem to sell out in minutes when released 2 days prior at 7am. Temperatures in early October were about 40 degrees F at the summit. Even...More
Definitely plan and make reservations for sunrise or sunset if you want one of those sights. But go mid-late morning if you want to avoid traffic and cyclists. Take your binoculars and camera, and stop at all the turn outs to soak up the views...More
Driving to the top of Haleakala was a wonderful experience. It's great for the whole family. The crater is really big and majestic looking with lots of nice photo ops. Pretty amazing to think it once spewed lava and created Maui! Make sure you check...More
we came from Kaanapali beach and it took us about 3hrs. to make it to the top (with a gas stop in Kahului). Initially the weather was pleasant, the scenery beautiful and happy cows were wandering around. After Kula the road became rather curvy and...More
I highly recommend sunrise at Haleakala. The view is spectacular and the experience is like no other. It is serene and majestic and absolutely breathtaking! Make sure you have a reservation - it is a MUST. You cannot go up without one. You either need...More
I was really impressed by the views going up the mountain. There are some nice properties and lush scenery to view on the way up. It is really cool to be above the clouds! The Visitors Center has several samples of the rare and unique...More
On a clear day you can see the whole island and over to the Big Island. On a cloudy day you can enjoy the feeling of touching the clouds. It is a high elevation so you may experience some effects if you ever suffer from...More
What a unforgettable experience.
We select the sunset once that is much easier to get a space on the top of Haleakala.
Take your time to reach the top, to stop the car (it was difficult) and get your winter clothes on.

If you’re scared of heights, don’t drive up to the crater. While there are wonderful views for the passengers it’s not that much fun for the driver. We made it up to the 8,000 ft lookout and then headed back down. Also be cautious as...More

It took us about an hour and 15 min maybe an hour and half to drive back down. The road is a lot of switchbacks although not as bad as the road to Hana if you have done that. There are no lights on the mountain road but I was not worried about it. It is dark but take your time and it will be just fine. We waited until a good bit after sunset to leave because we wanted to stargaze a little and wait for the majority of the traffic to clear out from sunset watchers.
It was a beautiful drive down as you can see all the lights from town below. Make sure you use the lower gears of your car for engine braking so you do not burn up the brakes going down.
Going up was right at about 2 hours. We took our time and wanted to enjoy the ride up. It could probably be done a little quicker although there are places you will be forced to slow down because of the switchbacks and/or if you stop any or have people in front of you driving slow.
It was beautiful and we are glad we did it.
