A must see for garden lovers!
Mount Congreve gardens are simply stunning. Gorgeous plants, trees, birds and dragonflies! We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed beautiful sunshine on the day of our visit. There's a great playground on the red trail for children to play and have fun. The shop and restaurant are also lovely and the staff were excellent. When I mentioned that we were staying at Faithlegg House Hotel Karen in the Mount Congreve shop advised that hotel guests were entitled to free admission to the gardens. I was unaware of this and was about the ring the hotel to enquire but Karen arranged it all for me. She asked her marketing manager Emma to contact the hotel on my behalf and within minutes two complimentary passes were organised. It was five star customer service and greatly appreciated!

    A hidden gem
My wife and I stopped here on the way to Cork from Waterford and we were so glad we did! These gardens have beautiful sounds, aromas, and people. You can easily spend half a day here looking at the different spaces and finishing it off with a great inexpensive lunch in the cafe!

    Beautiful Setting
We were in Waterford for the day. A friend who lives locally picked us up from the train station and drove us to Tramore and my wife’s great-grandfather’s former home, as well as other sites. She took us here for lunch. The flora was very nice, and the meal was delicious and inexpensive. The setting is very relaxing and we had time to walk to the river after we ate. It made for a memorable afternoon.

    Disappointed celebration
Booked for afternoon tea, as a family celebration for my birthday and coinciding with a visit from uk of our daughter and son in law. Made enquiries online about items shown on an up to date menu, which none of the four of us would eat, and enquired about possible substitutions. This was agreed. Further emails confirming all details sent and received. Came the day, we unfortunately did not receive the agreed substitutions, the chef had left for the day, nothing could be done. Huge disappointment, celebration somewhat spoiled. Other aspects of the afternoon tea were also disappointing, scones overcooked and really small, jam very runny, additional ingredient in sandwich, not advised. The waiting staff were extremely apologetic, nothing was their fault though, as we explained. Fast forward, I paid in full, emailed the cafe manager, detailing the happenings, asking for explanation. Eventually we reached a conclusion, and I was offered a partial refund, which I accepted. It would appear that the communication lines between staff broke down, causing the issues which we encountered. Truthfully feel that Ireland do not "do" afternoon tea very well, could certainly learn from other countries. Value for money? Sorry, no. Table servers, polite, friendly. Overall, issue was resolved within days of complaint, so thumbs up there. Moral, if you will eat anything and do not care how much it costs, then you may enjoy the experience . Be prepared.

    Not great, to be honest.
Cafe is an absolute shambles. People queuing for hot food, holding up people who just want a coffee. Limited selection of snacks, no scones. People holding tables for family members in the queue, do never enough tables. Toilets filthy, many not working at all. Access from the carpark is a rough, steep grave track not suited to wheelchairs, or even buggies. A manager would sort it all out in a day, but it appears they don't have one.

    Certainly no cigar here, disappointing
Ours was not a trip around the gardens but a visit to the restaurant with our aged aunt. To be perfectly honest the food leaves something to be desired. Coupled to which the place needed a good clean with rather disgustingly dirty cutlery and condiment holders and an aire of that they didn’t really know what they are doing. Have a cup of coffee there by all means but my advice would be to skip the lunch until they bring in new management.

    Fabulous cafe, beautiful architecture
We visited the stables cafe as part of our walk on the Waterford Greenway. Beautiful cafe to visit, exceptional food - freshly cooked and very high quality experience. Lovely location and ambiance, v friendly staff. Well priced given the quality. We will be back to visit the gardens. The John Roberts-designed house is a Baroque take on a Palladian pattern - a delight to see in any weather.

    Worst Afternoon Tea ever.
Went for Afternoon tea with daughter and sister. Definitely will not return or recommend. Room was so cold as just a plug in heater turned on before we entered. The menu was not worth the €117 for 3 people. 2 bite sized scones each and tiny desserts which was the festive Afternoon tea despite us booking normal Afternoon tea. Asked for 2nd pot of tea and lady never returned so we left after waiting 20mins. As my daughter was heavily pregnant we didn't want to make scene. I rang once home without her to speak to manager but he seemed to have answer for everything. Definitely will not recommend here for Afternoon Tea ever!

    Great afternoon tea
We booked afternoon tea in the tack room in Mount congreve. We couldn't fault one party of it. It happened to be one of their busiest weekends as they have a Halloween family day on and the stables cafe was buzzing with family getting lunch. The staff were prompt with delivering our afternoon tea and had time to tell us some of the history of the house and future plans for Mount congreve. The food was just delicious. Having the cliff take on the food was a great move for the establishment. We had to take home some of the cakes as it was so filling. We have a yearly membership to the gardens and cannot wait to renew it.

    Fabulous French Toast
This is a beautiful estate, perfect for a relaxing ramble through historic gardens. We visited the cafe for breakfast on Sunday morning and it was such a lovely experience. The French Toast was excellent, slightly crunchy outside with a custardy creamy interior, the bacon was ample and the dining room was just so lovely. Other options include pastries, oatmeal, pancakes and traditional hot breakfasts. This is a hidden gem, worth the drive to have Sunday breakfast and a lovely way to recharge before starting the week.

    Poor quality, tiny portions.
This morning my husband and I visited the Stables Café at Mt. Congreve for a mid-morning cuppa on a gloriously sunny day! Since my last visit a few months ago, it seems that the café had improved with the salad bar and hot food looking nicely presented. The cakes and desserts were also tantalisingly displayed. I had a gluten-free lemon slice, and my husband had a chocolate flapjack...both were TINY! He had a coffee, which he said was just ok. I was extremely dismayed that my green tea, served in a stained teapot, was a cheap brand teabag!! At €3.50 I expect my green tea to be loose-leaf and of good quality. There are several brands on this island which other cafes normally serve. Sadly very few in Waterford unfortunately :( It would be unthinkable for cafes nowadays to serve coffee drinkers an instant coffee brand, but green-tea drinkers are served what I can only describe as " dirty water". Disappointing.

    Lost its magic
Having visited the place many many times over the years but not since the pandemic we decided to visit again. It was pleasing to see the work that has been done on the house and the building of a new entrance, cafe and kids park. The cafe/shop is what it is, very nice however very expensive and no different to other cafes. Toilets are lovely and I suppose this contributes to the vast increase in entry prices. There is a nice new kids park on the woodland walk, with a juice bar that again is selling over priced items in my opinion. For us as a family we really loved visiting here in the past and it was all about the walks and gardens. We used the little shop for a coffee and ice cream for the kids at the end of our adventures. Entry price then was €5 per adult and kids free. I understand the need for the place to be commercialised but for me the place has lost its magical qualities. Personally I think too much focus is now being put into the commercial side of things and as a result the gardens and walks are being neglected. Extremely poor signage and unloved plants and walks, the bench at the top of montys lawn was a place we always stopped at for a drink and take in the veiw, sadly this bench is in dire need of some love and paint. Perhaps one less employee in the shop/cafe and one added to the maintenance team might work wonders. After all, is it not supposed to be all about the gardens/walks? Shame really as our family always really looked forward to our walks around mount Congreve but at €28 a visit, ourselves and I'd imagine other families have been priced out of visiting as often. Last time I reviewed I gave 5 stars but not this time. Please prioritise the gardens and walks again and do something with the family entry prices. €28 price for a family of 4 is way over priced. Even the online price of €25 is too much to encourage repeat visits.

    Beautiful gardens and walks
Gorgeous, sumptuous gardens and walks. Added immeasurably to a beautiful day trip in County Waterford. Stunning scenery, walks, shrubs and features. One little nit, though, the toilets in the visitor centre/sales outlet area need a little extra TLC. Gerry & Mag

A great afternoon out-if you get a rain free day in Ireland!
What a beautiful spot in Waterford. Lots of walking tracks to explore. The hydrangeas in full bloom are really lovely-every pastel colour you can think of. Great views. The shop is well stocked with lots of cool garden related stuff. Cafe sells basic but nice food and drink.

Excellent day out. The playground is a fantastic part of the gardens and my daughter (2yrs) had the best time. The gardens are stunning and there so much to explore. I would recommend that you bring your own snacks for young kids - the small stand selling items near the playground is very expensive - one can of lemonade is €3.35. So may just be best to have your own snacks just in case! The long walk took about 60 min and my daughter brought her bike and she was able to cycle on almost all the terrain and she loved exploring all the different areas.

Dear Carolinenis, We are delighted that you enjoyed your time in the gardens with your daughter. We stock Irish, artisanal products in the Greenhouse Juicebar and sometimes this means that they are more expensive than the household sodas but glad that this did not detract from your visit. We look forward to welcoming you and your daughter again to Mount Congreve Gardens.

We we blown away by the rich diversity of plant life, and the variety of trails to be explored. We had imagined we would spend an hour or so, but ended up staying 4 hours! Would recommend watching the short video at the start, to get a little background on the history. Then wander to your heart's content. Also enjoyed a tasty meal at the cafe.

Fantastic collection of trees and foliage from around the world. However on arrival there was no real indication of the entry price before purchasing and we were not automatically given a map of the garden - consequently we missed out on several featured items to view on the way round the garden. Loved the introduction film and the walled garden. The trees and foliage could have done with more and improved signs.

The gardens were wonderful with all the gorgeous blossom everywhere and we really enjoyed all the walks in the grounds. The toilets were lacking in care however. We visited them twice - once just after opening time and again after lunch. On both occasions most cubicles did not have toilet paper. The restaurant was quite disappointing. The portion of chicken with our salads was minuscule - 4 tiny slivers & the grapefruit, potato & mozzerella salad had neither potato or mozzerella. We all felt we overpaid for the small amounts provided.

Dear Pioneer26263102775 Thank you for visiting Mount Congreve Gardens. We are delighted that you enjoyed the gardens but other elements were lacking. The toilets are serviced regularly throughout the day however, it was the busiest weekend we have ever experienced in Mount Congreve so we concede that there were some pinch points. Regarding your meal, we would love to have you return with our compliments. Please contact the estate office admin@mountcongreve.com

We went for Sunday lunch to Mount Congreve which was divine. The turkey was possibly the best I ever had. We enjoyed the jazz trio performing and were well looked after by Nelson. We checked into the Gate Lodge and the overall experience was so luxurious and stately. It was a particularly cold night but we were very cosy. The beds were heavenly and we all slept really well. Highly recommend!

I have been to the gardens many times and they are always wonderful, changing at every time of year. However, today's visit was very special, thanks to our guide, Mark Corcoran, a senior gardener at Mount Congreve, who not only has expert knowledge of the plants here but also knew Ambrose Congreve very well over many years. His entertaining anecdotes about those times brought the history of the garden alive, and I could almost imagine that Ambrose Congreve might be around the next corner!
This tour is so special that it would be great if it could be recorded so that future generations of visitors could have access to it.
Thanks Mark!

What a vast and wonderful garden to explore. 79 acres with the most fantastic trees, shrubs and plants to explore. Wear comfortable shoes and give yourself 3 hours plus at least to see the wonderful rhodendrums, azaleas, dogwood kousa and hundreds of other spectacular species.

The Gardens are Totally amazing and so worth the trip. Easy to walk with not too many hills or rough terrain. The views are spectacular and the plants are just so amazing.
The shop is lovely for a wander around.
This is my second time visiting and the food is just not good at all. The choices are limited and the food is sitting out with the Guinness brown bread a little stale and hard and the smoked salmon curling at the edges. No need to have some simple food made up in such large batches for it to be going off and not at its best. The chicken salad had 3 tiny piece of chicken (they are getting 3 portions from 1 chicken fillet). Sorry to be hard and not complementary, but i would advise anybody to go elsewhere for food. It’s a lovely restaurant with lovely staff and very nice surroundings. My advice get a coffee - but don’t bother planning your trip around food.

This is really a forest along a riverbank with some paths. Apart from some hydrangea not much of a garden. Loads of the invasive rhododendrons however. Nice shop and cafe, but generally disappointed l, the nicest part is the part seen from the Greenway

Having long been visitors to the gardens over the last number of years - but living further into the county and not able to visit frequently, we decided to stop by on a recent trip to Waterford. What little we saw of the gardens looked fitting for the time of year and we observed a number of new sign posts. One thing that was clearly lacking was any indication of the quite steep climb between carpark and Café/Visitor Hub. Something my elderly mother struggled with and had we known, could have been avoided easily enough.

On to where things take a pretty desperate turn.
We arrived shortly after the lunch time rush should have finished, at around 14:30 or so. Although the place was not heaving with people, there were a number seated - but on the empty tables remaining (say a good 25%) there were dirty plates piled high and tables were clearly not being cleared or wiped.

The que at the "kitchen counter" looked mercifully non-existent and so we had high hopes of reasonably quick service. Our hope diminished after several minutes and no member of staff was to be seen.

After several more minutes, a female (I'd like to use the word lady but frankly, she wasn't) emerged from a door, piled a plate full of food, shoved a piece of cake into her mouth and promptly disappeared back behind the door labelled "staff only".

She did eventually reappear and by this point ravenous, we elected not to order cooked food. Probably just as well given her limited grasp of English. We did however manage to secure ourselves Sausage rolls and a slice of cake. Not at all the meal we had envisioned but needs must.

We then proceeded around the corner towards the till, where we encountered a bored looking female who was quite literally twiddling her thumbs. Another young lady was frantically making coffee at a large machine. Coffee was ordered for one of the party and we then had to take out a second mortgage to pay for our "meal" (if you can call it that).

It took nearly ten minutes to spend our multi-million lottery winnings however, as the hapless girl on the till had to repeatedly ask for assistance in finding the three items on our two plates.

Having finally handed over the final vestiges of our respective bank accounts, we managed to find a table where there was a remnant of space left beneath the towering piles of as yet uncleared dirty crockery.

As you can imagine, I was distinctly ready to sink my teeth into the afore mentioned Sausage Roll - but when I did, oh the disappointment.

What had looked like tasty and delicious morsel (albeit ridiculously small for the astronomical price) turned out to be no more than a re-heated (just) flavourless, greasy lump that bore more resemblance to cardboard than your average Amazon envelope.

To add insult to injury, once sat and able to examine my surroundings further, the truth of the place begins to unfold; despite it being a mere six months or so since it opened, there is paint flaking from the walls and there are painfully clear damp and mould issues.
Having paid the exorbitant price for the food, I expect both it and the ambiance to be of good quality and in both instances, the Stables Café failed miserably.

In conclusion and for those who can't be bothered to read the review in it's entirety;

Service: Shocking
Food: Seriously Shocking.
Ambiance: Horrifyingly shocking.
Prices: - I think you know where this is going..

I was prompted to write this review after learning that the Stables Café has won a "Visitor Attraction Award" - which is frankly one of the single most laughable things I've ever read, the above experience put a serious dampener on my wanting to ever visit again.
From the extortionate prices to the dire food, dreadful service, flaking paint and mould covered walls, this place should simply be avoided at all costs.

Dear timeS2690KZ, We really are at a loss to respond to your review. We will always respond in kind to any and all complaints we receive but we do take great exception with how you have referred to a member of our hardworking team. Couple this with the fact that you could not see the good or joy in our recent accolade, instead choosing to take the opportunity to put us down. You do however, raise some valid points and I would like to address them. - There is a walk from the carpark to the house which is not suitable for those suffering with mobility issues. It is for this reason that we have mobility parking in front of the visitor centre with signage indicating same and are also building an additional 70 space carpark that is closer to the house. - As you state yourself, you arrived after the lunchtime rush so it is normal that tables were in the process of being cleared. - I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your sausage roll and am happy to reimburse you the cost of your meal. Please contact the estate office admin@mountcongreve.com - Renovations in an 18th-century building as you can imagine is no mean feat. We were obliged to use a 'breathable' paint on the walls and this is now presenting challenges and we are working with the conservation architects on a solution. timeS2690KZ, it is our goal to ensure everyone who passes through our doors has an enjoyable experience and if for any reason they do not, we always welcome feedback and complaints as this is what we serve us to improve. However, please be aware that this does not give members of the public the right to offer derogatory comments towards any of our team.
