Not to be Missed - Fascinating and Fun.
May 2021
The tour was a perfect mix of learning fascinating facts about the Romans and the Celts as well as getting to see Hadrians wall up close during the walk. Kevin the guide is amazing in his level of knowledge and information he is able to share. It really comes across that this truly is his passion but he also has a very engaging way of getting the information across to the tour group. We were in a group of 5 which was a perfect size. Having Kevin dressed in Celt gear and explaining how it all worked along with some Roman military artefacts was a highlight of the tour. Strongly recommended

Insightful and Entertaining Tour
Jul 2018 • Family
Dressed in his traditional Celtic wardrobe, Kevin captured the attention of my entire clan, building a world in their imaginations from a time long ago. My 10-year old oohhed and aahed at the tales of deceit and double crossing, incredible architecture and feats of bravery. History re-lived.

Wild Dog Outdoor Tour was the highlight of our whole trip
Sep 2017
If you have a bucket list of things you want to do before you die, a Wild Dog Outdoor Tour should definitely be on your list. I treated an archaeology graduate to the Stone Circles tour and both he and I were captivated from beginning to end.

In fact, even though we stayed at Northumberland's Langley Castle in glorious surroundings, it was the tour provided by Wild Dog Outdoors that was the highlight of our trip. From the moment Emma collected us from our residence, to the moment she dropped us off at the train station, she and Joe exceeded all expectations and went above and beyond to ensure our day was as magnificent as the stunning views we encountered along the way.

Kevin paired us perfectly with enthusiastic and hugely knowledgeable archaeologist, Joe Jackson. From the moment we met Joe at the first location, it was clear that his knowledge about the stone circle sites would add to our limited knowledge of these areas, and his presentation was such that it had me captivated all day too, which is no mean feat considering that, unlike the gift's recipient, I tend to fall asleep at the mere mention of the word 'history'!

Joe's ability to weave in humour while imparting the necessary facts in a way that is conducive to the audience is a rare skill that he has mastered so well that he makes learning fun, and each step of the fascinating journey unfolded in such a way that neither of us wanted the day to end.

From the mysterious Long Meg and Her Daughters to the amazing Mayburgh Henge and through to Castlerigg stone circle, these monuments are steeped in history that can only be fully enjoyed through years of study, or an excellent tour guide who's done the hard work for you.

September can be precarious as far as weather goes, and yet we felt blessed as we experienced a day of sunshine in the competent hands of such a knowledgeable guide whose love of his job is infectious. Indeed, his commitment to ensuring every step of the day was both fascinating, fun and enjoyable has left us with memories we'll cherish forever.

Even before we reached any of the stone circles, Emma drove us through the stunning Eden Valley, stopping at a perfect vantage point so that we could capture the best of this glorious part of the world. And, speaking of exceeding expectations, two hours after the tour's scheduled end, Emma was just dropping us off at the train station most convenient to us, having spent time driving us via another scenic route so that we could see Hadrian's Wall before our return home, where we were treated to an email containing some additional photos of the areas we had visited!

We will be sure to recommend Wild Dog Outdoors far and wide. Suffice to say no words could sufficiently encapsulate what a wonderful day we both had. Sometimes 'thank you' just isn't enough. This is one of those times.

Great Roam with the Romans Tour
Jul 2017 • Family
We did the two hour tour of Hadrian's Wall. Was a good balance between keeping the children interested and ourselves. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and well read, and we learnt loads of interesting facts. All in all well worth it. The scenery was spectacular as well!

Roaming with the Romans
Jun 2017 • Family
My 12 year old son and I did the Roam with Romans tour on 22 June 2017. Kevin is an articulate, friendly and enthusiastic guide, with a great depth of knowledge on the history of Northumberland. He picked us up from our hotel, so this is ideal if you do not have a car. We visited Hadrian's Wall at picturesque Cawfields, then we went to Vindolanda where we were lucky to witness an archeological dig uncover a Roman writing tablet! Kevin also guided us around the Museum at Vindolanda and we gained much more insight on Roman Army life than if we were visiting alone. I would definitely recommend this tour for for an enjoyable and interesting overview on Roman history in Northumberland.

Highlight of my stay in Northumbria - history brought to life
Mar 2017 • Solo
I joined Kevin on the 'Roam with the Roman's tour', alongside Hadrian's wall. I had a fantastic time! It was surreal, but so cool to meet Kevin, in his authentic outfit and feel like I was being given a guide from a spirit of the past. I love social history and Keven narrated so many interesting quirky facts that have stayed with me and which I certainly wouldn't have known if I had only visited sites/museums. I was also so impressed with 'Wild Dogs' for doing the tour with just me (it was my birthday weekend and none of my family could join me but I thought it exceptionally kind that Kevin turned out for a tour with just one customer). I absolutely loved this tour and hope to return to Northumbria later in the year with my family and enjoy another authentically guided tour. All correspondence and planning was dealt with in the utmost professionalism and care. I would highly recommend this company.

Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda
Dec 2016 • Family
Spent a lovely day with Kev from Wild Dog Outdoors. He took my son (aged 10) and I for a walk/tour along a portion of Hadrian's Wall and then a guided tour through the Vindolanda site/museum. It was a great day and tour! Very informative and interesting. He kept my 10-year-old son interested and entertained for a whole day. The demonstration of real Roman garb and weaponry was brilliant. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to individuals and families. This tour was one of the highlights of our week long visit to Newcastle.

Terrific and knowledgable guides
Nov 2016 • Couples
My wife and I visited England for our honeymoon in November, 2016. Not exactly a typical time to visit, and Northumberland may not be a part of the country that one naturally thinks of visiting as the days are getting shorter and the weather is growing colder, but we wanted to see more of the country than just the south.

We also wanted to see some historical sites while we were there, so we booked two tours with Wild Dog Outdoors: the Roaming with the Romans tour, and the Devilswater to Durham tour, with Kevin as our guide on both days.

Both tours were fantastic! Kevin is an incredibly knowledgeable, friendly guide, with what is clearly a deep passion for history. The sites were also terrific to see. On our Roam with the Romans tour, we visited Hadrian's Wall (one of the mile forts near Haydon Bridge), and the Vindolanda museum, both of which are remarkable sites to see. The Vindolanda museum is worth visiting alone, even if weather prohibits a walk to the wall itself. It's an amazing collection of antiquity that really helps to illustrate daily life on the frontier of Roman Britain.

On our second day, we visited Hexham Abbey (including the crypts below), Blanchland, and both Durham Cathedral and Durham College. While Durham Cathedral and College are certainly the centerpieces of this tour, the other two sites are well worth visiting, and Kevin again provided excellent insight into the history of both locations.

For both days, Kevin picked us up at our hotel, and drove us around by car. This gave us an opportunity to see a bit more of the Northumberland countryside, which I highly recommend seeing if you have a chance. On our second day, we also stopped at the Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland for a cup of coffee, and had lunch in the Durham Cathedral restaurant, both of which were quite nice, especially on a cool November day.

Overall, we had a wonderful time, and heartily recommend Wild Dog Outdoors.

One last note as a postscript -- don't be scared of visiting in the later months of fall. One of the main benefits of the timing of our trip was that there was basically nobody around anywhere, so we had pretty much all of the sites we visited to ourselves, at least insofar as other tourists were concerned. I'd suggest visiting in September or October, though, if you're looking to do Wild Dog's Castles of the Coastline tour (which I'll absolutely do the next time we're in the area), since many of the sites close down for the winter months.

Walk with a Roman auxiliary
Aug 2016
This was arranged for me as part of a tour. Kevin came to pick me up and drove me to our first stop, where he dressed as a Roman auxiliary, and we walked a section of the wall. He then took me to Vindolanda and Housesteads, which were fascinating with his commentary. He is a mine of information, presented in an informal and easily digested style. The whole thing lasted six hours, and was one of the most interesting days I have experienced.
