We just finished an 11 Day Discover Ireland Tour and couldn't be happier! Mark is an amazing gifted guide. He timed our stops with unbelievable precision and avoided big rushes of people getting off cruise ships and big tour buses. This enabled us to see everything in an unhurried way. Mark must have a photographic memory! We were all amazed at the depth of information he gave without pausing. He was like the favorite history teacher everyone wanted as he shared songs, poetry and folklore related to each stop which made the history come to life! His joy and enthusiasm and love for his country is infectious. Mark knew all the best places to eat and knew where all the best live music was. We stayed at the nicest places, clean and comfortable. We met the nicest people on the tour and at the stops. I can not say enough wonderful things about this tour! It was truly great craic! The best way to spend my 50th birthday and 28th wedding anniversary! Also, the best way to tour Ireland! There's no way we would have seen and learned as much as we did with this small group tour with Mark Doherty! Happy days! Woo hoo!

Hello celgraham, thank you for your 5* review of our Driftwood 11 Day Discover Ireland Tour. Our guides are like walking wikipedias! Mark is super and a great member of our guides team. Congratulations on your birthday and wedding anniversary - what a great way to spend your birthday but in Ireland. Ireland's culture really comes to life when you get to live like a local and meet the locals on our small group tours. See you again one day. Rob Rankin, Owner.

I wish there was a more superlative word to use than "wow" but that word well describes my experience. From the sites visited to the accommodations to the comfort of the van to the consideration and knowledge of the guide, this company nailed it. No guide could be better than Mark Doherty. Every site we visited was interesting. Every hotel was good. I loved that we occasionally had choices of places to visit. I loved that Mark kept up a commentary while on the van that was amusing, informative and sometimes in 3/4 meter (i.e., singing). Mark gave great recommendations of places to visit in each city and even drove us on a loop around the town to help us get oriented. There were 15 people in our group and every one of them was delightful. By the end of the trip, we all loved each other. Would I recommend this company and the 11-day Discover Ireland tour? You betcha!

Hello cbfield, thank you for your review of the 11 Day Driftwood Discover Ireland tour. We like WOW and three of them is even better! Our small group tours are all about giving options and choice, although we are a guided scheduled tour company this is one thing that really makes us stand out. Our small groups really gel well together and you end up making lots of friends. Rob Rankin, Owner.

The 11 day tour of Ireland was fantastic! Our tour guide / bus driver Mark was not only knowledgeable and professional, but also extremely helpful and accommodating. The tour lead us all around the island and showed many of the best tourist locations as well as many hidden gems. The tour guide was so knowledgeable he was able to take us to many of the very busy locations across Ireland before the rush came allowing for us to experience the beauty of Ireland without the crowds. The small group tours allowed for a much more specialized experience and could not recommend a better tour group, and that’s not even including the fact that the company strives to be carbon neutral and offsets all their fuel consumption by planting trees! 10/10

I was expecting to be amazed by Ireland, but with Driftwood, I was completely blown out of my socks! This trip was top notch, full of great accommodations, great history, fantastic opportunities to get off the beaten track, and so much more! I traveled with my 90 year old grandmother and our guide and the staff at Vagabond were so accommodating. They called ahead to make sure we had ground floor rooms and allowed us to bring a lightweight wheelchair on the trip and gave us pointers on the best routes to take with it. What a wonderful experience!

Hello hherc29, thank you for your review, we love taking everyone around Ireland, no matter what their age. Our Driftwood Tours are ideal as they are a nice slow pace and laid back. Maybe we will see you and your friends back on a Vagabond adventure one day! Rob Rankin, Owner.

As you will see this tour gets 5 stars by everyone and it is well deserved. This tour takes you to all the beautiful sights that Ireland has to offer. Our guide, Mark Doherty, was able to work around the cruise ship and big bus crowds because he lives in Ireland and knows the times of other tours and knows back roads to get places and avoiding crowds. Not only is he knowledgeable but he is quite a funny guy with a pretty good voice. He sang Danny Boy while we were traveling along the roads of beautiful green countryside, almost brought tears to my eyes. The Discover tour is a more relaxed tour than the Vagabond but still plenty of activity if you want. There is always a choice of activities that you can choose. The accommodations are outstanding, the people are so friendly and the country is stunning. If you want to see Ireland this is the tour for you.

Hi funisyours, thank you for reviewing our slower paced Driftwood tour option, you are right that there is lots to see and do on these tours too, with choices...Thank you for your 5* review. Mark is a wonderful guide indeed who loves a good sing song. Kind regards, Rob Rankin.

Last month, my husband and I went on the Driftwood “Discover Ireland Tour” and had the time of our lives! We couldn’t have asked for a better trip – from staying at magical little inns at the bed of a beautiful lake to a full day in Dingle to castles and manors (and sheep farming!), it was just a great experience. We met so many new friends and had terrific guides in Mark Dougherty and later, Larry (see photos). The tour also covered Northern Ireland which was fascinating and beautiful – and also a little melancholy (due to the conflict there). But it made for a well rounded trip. We really feel like we know Ireland now.

What also is outstanding about this particular tour is that the group is small -- around a dozen people. And the guides know how to schedule the more touristy things to do against the big bus tour companies so you are often getting to your destination without facing big crowds of tourists (a big plus as we went in summer).

I also suggest 3-4 days in Dublin – the one thing we regretted is we didn’t stay in Dublin longer. And I suggest choosing the hotel Vagabond recommends in Dublin, Grand Canal Hotel – since we had a four week trip throughout Europe, they let us leave a bag w them so we didn’t have to lug all our luggage for our Ireland portion. The hotel is in a good location with plenty of good eateries and canals nearby. And the staff was very nice -- positive review to follow.

Hello silverlakegirl, thanks for sharing your photos, love them! Small group really allows for so many benefits, from our small vehicles getting down those twisty roads, to spontaneous lunch stops on route, and not forgetting feeling like a bunch of friends by the end of the tour! Thank you for your 5* review, Rob Rankin, Owner.

We just returned from the 11 Day Discover Ireland trip with Jason. WOW! Everything from start to finish ran smoothly and effortlessly. The planning that goes into these trips by Vagabond is really fantastic. We saw so many things that we never would have on our own. Jason was top notch, really knew his history and had a bit a sense of humor dealing with 14 tourists from all over America. It was a fun group of people and we had many laughs (and pints) together. The accommodations were strategically placed to get us to some of the larger attractions before the giant tour busses arrived. Mount Falcon, Bally Gally Castle and Gougane Barra were our favorite hotel/guesthouses. Being in Clifden and Dingle for several days was a plus, felt like we really got the feel for the towns. We loved the sheep farm, Giant's causeway, Black Cab tour in Belfast, Carrick-a-rede ropes bridge, the Cliffs of Moher, but also just stopping and seeing the beauty of the Burren and the Beara peninsula. Stops in Little towns along roads where the Big Busses cannot go were an added bonus. We are ready to go back and try a Vagabond, more active tour next. Thanks for a great trip!

Hello Kelly V, we look forward to welcoming you back on one of more active Vagabond Adventure tours next! Thank you for your lovely review. Jason is super, a real gem. Our vehicles are just the right size to squeeze down those narrow Irish roads...See you again soon, Kind regards, Rob Rankin.

We have recently experienced an 11 day clockwise Driftwood tour of Ireland that exceeded all our expectations. We were part of a group of 13 people, all from the US, and we got along brilliantly during our travels.
Our guide Mark Doherty was phenomenal and so very multi-talented. Number one, he was able to navigate our bus through the narrow roads of the country with such skill that all we had to do was relax, look out the windows and enjoyed to beautiful views of the countryside. This is no small feat. Mark's love and passion for Ireland was very evident as he regaled us with the history, geology and folklore of his native land. Did I mention that he serenaded us with many songs and recited long, beautiful poems and prose shedding light on the Irish culture? To top it all off, he arranged restaurant reservations for the group when necessary and was spot-on with his reviews of the food and service of establishments when we had meals on our own.
Vagabond has done a fantastic job of scheduling this tour to hit so many of the highlights that you read about when researching Ireland but also manages to show you places that many visitors never experience.
We started off with a smooth pickup in Dublin and the very first day included the Rock of Cashel, Blarney Castle and the dreamlike accommodations at Gougane Barra. What a way to kick off the trip!
From there the tour was a whirlwind of the people, the sights and the sounds of Ireland including the drive over Healy Pass, boat trip to Garnish Island, the Ring of Kerry, Killarney National Park, crystal artisan Sean Daly in Dingle, Bridget and Seamus directing their dogs in a sheep herding demonstration, The Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, Kylemore Abbey, Croagh Patrick, The Giant's Causeway etc, etc etc! I could go on and on.
I mentioned the "sounds" of Ireland. We spent two nights in Clifden and were treated to some fabulous traditional Irish music there which was one of the many highlights of our journey of discovery. The music and the enchanting, lyrical brogue of the friendly locals we met all along the way was infectious.
While all of these experiences were dream-like, we also experienced a dose of reality when we took the walking tour in Derry and the political Black Cab tour in Belfast. The history of Ireland is being written today and the insights we received in these two cities provided us a depth and breadth of understanding of the situation there that is invaluable. We have great hope that the "quiet" Ireland experiences today will continue and that a lasting resolution to the issues there can be reached in our lifetime.
Vagabond gave us great advice when they suggested we give ourselves some time in Dublin before our tour rather than after. Following that advice, we booked four nights in the area around Christchurch and St. Patrick's Cathedrals which enabled us to walk to many of the attractions in Dublin itself including Trinity College and the Guinness Warehouse. The Grand Canal Hotel, which is the pick up and drop off point, is bit removed from that part of the city.
The weather was a wee bit cold in Dublin, so a "puffy" jacket came in handy as did sweaters and a raincoat and rain pants. One pair of sturdy hiking shoes was perfect for all the activities we encountered.
It was a fabulous trip and I don't know if 5 stars does it justice. Woo hoo! Happy Days! :-)

Hello Denis K, thank you for your 5* - we will take it! A few days in Dublin is a must and we think most guests like to be flexible on how they want to do that, it sounds like you had a great time exploring the city. There is lots to experience in Ireland, the landscape is beautiful, the people friendly, the food is very tasty and the history of our small island is extensive and interesting! Our guides do such a super job of showing our guests around and explaining the history of Ireland. Good tips on the clothes! Rob Rankin, Owner.

From the very beginning, this tour company is exceptional! They don't inundate you with emails, are incredibly responsive to any questions, and provide you with the best information to help prepare you for your trip (packing tips, optional tours, currency info, etc - thank you Ciara McGrath!). Their website is very user friendly too. Once you arrive, you are in the best of hands. Our tour guide was Mark Doherty - he is the best!!! He has a quick Irish wit, patience of a saint, incredible knowledge of the language, history, folklore, geology and "semi-rotted vegetation that accumulates in water-logged conditions", fantastic songs and poems he has committed to memory. He kept us on track avoiding crowds and entertained all while navigating the windy roads of Ireland with expert skill (we were able to see so much more without the worry of driving ourselves). We had 13 on our tour (I think the max is 16).
Because of this and being in a smaller bus versus a large coach, we were able to access sites, locations, hotels, inns, and accommodations (all amazing from castles to estates and independent hotels and inns) that would not be a consideration for a larger group tour of 50+ making it feel like a more genuine experience. We all had so much fun and great laughs! All of us were commenting on how lucky we felt to have booked with Vagabond, to have had Mark as our guide, and to have met our fellow travelers. I cannot say enough about this experience other than it exceeded all my expectations. I was travelling with my sisters and brother-in-laws but would absolutely take this tour if travelling solo (very safe) Thanks a million Rob Rankin and Mark Doherty - Highly highly recommend!!!

Hello Jen L, thank you for your 5* review. Our reservations team work so hard here at VagaHQ - thank you for mentioning Ciara, she does a super job. Being small is sometimes a good thing! Especially when you want to go off the beaten track and discover hidden spots that others cannot. Thank you for choosing Vagabond Tours of Ireland, Rob Rankin, Owner.

My wife and I have traveled quite a bit and usually shunned group tours. After this tour I was left wondering if we've been mistaken all of these years!

This tour, especially under the guidance of our guide, Mark Doherty was superb. Sure the trip was well-planned and the stops well-chosen but what made this trip wonderful was Mark: his humor, attention to details, taking care of each and every client and ensuring that their needs were met, knowledge of Irish history, folklore, geology, recent societal challenges, ecology, modern life, etc. etc. ensured that the trip was not only delightful but educational as well. Learning a few salty Irish songs along the way spiced things up during some of the longer segments in the van:-)

I started this trip expecting to see a slice of Ireland and an opportunity to share time with my wife and family and take a bunch of pictures. I left Ireland experiencing all that but feeling that I must have been part Irish all this time and that my family included everyone on that van. A truly heartwarming experience that I shall always treasure!! Cudos to Vagabond and especially Mark for creating an environment that allowed all that to happen.

Hello potatoee, we love to get guests on tour who think small groups are not for them! In fact we are very different from your average small group guided tour company...we like to offer choice and allow our guests to make decisions about what they want to do. Thank you for your 5* review. Rob Rankin, Owner.
