Wonderful time at the Sami Siida museum
We had a wonderful time at the Sami museum. It is beautiful museum and we learned so much about the landscape and Sami culture and the connections to the land. Our guide, David, had a lot of local knowledge and gave us additional dimensions about what we learned. He also brought us to a special stop to have our picture taken with a signpost to Murmansk! I highly recommend this tour. In addition to all the other things to do in Lapland, it’s important to learn about the culture of the local people, plus, it’s really interesting!

        A must try experience!
Great interaction from the host and definitely a must try for everyone in mining your own stone! View from the top of the mine station is also marvellous

Unfortunately the tour was a complete failure. The meeting point is totally confusing. We had to search the driver for the tour. We asked every people where we can find the driver. 20 minutes later the driver came to us and asked if we have booked the tour. He should hold a sign for the tour. This makes it easier for us to recognize. When we arrived, the changing room was freezing (it was minus 20 degrees outside). We had to request the owner to turn on the oven. That was totally a minus point. We have expected that the owner should be prepared for this. According to the tour description, there are no additional costs. But for the whirlpool costs 30 euros per person extra. An absolute no-go. For this activity we booked for 4 hours but after 2 hours the driver suddenly came saying we have to leave now. We were completely perplexed. We were irritated. We are forced to stop the activity. That was very disappointing. Unfortunately we have to say that we will not recommend the tour und can not give up 0 stars.

        Must go place
This is an excellent place. This village is full of activities in winter; you can do Aurora hunting by bus, snowmobile, in foot as well, Lapland Safari is a good option for that. Husky tour is excellent by Husky & Co. Skiing is perfect from here, the lifts are there in the village, they have renting place for skiing which is huge and excellent and have beginners classes as well. Riekonlinna Hotel by Lapland Hotels perhaps is the best option as a hotel there, otherwise Holiday Inn, Saariselka Inn and Hotel Tunturi are good options for Hotel and Apartment. You should have layers on for the cold there, it's easily -11 - - 20 at the winter, however you can rent jumpsuits from Lapland Safari's office which is downstairs to Riekonlinna Hotel. Cheers

        First snowmobile of the season!
We booked the late night aurora hunting snowmobile excursion of the season leaving from Saariselka and had an excellent time. We appreciate the itinerary which included some snowmobiling, adequate time looking for northern lights, camp fire with local fare and constellation orientation. Highly recommend!

Snowmobiling and Ice Fishing with Jukka
Two of my friends and I went snowmobiling with Jukka. We had a great time snowmobiling and even saw a reindeer and the northern lights. Ice fishing was a new experience for me, but after brief instructions, I felt confident and comfortable out on the ice. Out of my 10+ years of adventuring, Jukka might just be the best guide I've had venturing out into the bush. From the very beginning, he gave instructions clearly, being sure that everyone in the group understood. When, because of conditions outside of his control (i.e. the weather and trail conditions), our situation became dangerous, Jukka decided to end the safari before we reached our original destination. In my experience, only top-notch guides are able to access a situation, recognize dangers, and change plans accordingly without getting overwhelmed. Jukka did all of this quickly and got us out of a potentially dangerous situation. Our excellent guide made for a fantastic safari out in beautiful Lapland.

        Cross country skiing at Saariselkä
None of us had experience skiing, but with the guidance of our guide, Yukka, and countless falls, we gradually got the hang of it. Skiing was truly a workout, never have we felt so warm in freezing temperatures. The activity can be customised to the group’s skiing experience. For our level of experience, we felt the duration of the activity was just right. We also made a pitstop at a husky farm for hot chocolate (payable) and got to see some puppies and sled dogs. (The toilets have no sinks to wash your hands, snow and hand sanitisers were used instead). We ended off the activity with a 400m walk to the carpark, with our skis in tow, and had a nice cup of fruit tea and biscuits in the van. We would like to commend Yukka for his patience and words of encouragement. He made sure everyone had fun while prioritising safety. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

        Worth the Long walk.
It is about 2.0-2.5 hours drive from Ivalo and the car cannot enter to the mine area because is a National park. The car park is about 2.6 km away from the Amethyst mine and takes about another 100 meters by wooden board steps up to the mine. So the whole return journey to the car park is about 5-6km walk on a gentle uphill slope pathway. However, they had devised an interesting quiz along the route having about 10 questions about the national park about every 200 meters there is a question tagged to the tree. If you get all correct you get a prize. Also note and check that the entry to the mine has scheduled time and is closed on one of the days which l had forgotten. We went on one of the days that was closed and had to make another trip. It is a small mine and there is no commercial mining activity, it is still done through manual conventional mining of chiselling with spikes and hammer since it is now a national park. The guide will explain about the amethyst and visitors at the end are given a chance to dig amethyst themselves. If you could find one that could be covered by your fingers when you close your palm, then you can take away that piece. Anyway dont expect to get big piece. There is also a store where they sell their Amethyst but is not cheap for a good one. The Biggest piece of Amethyst that was dug out in this mine is in ARTIKUM museum in Rovaniemi which we went to see also. Would certainly recommend to visit this site and then head on to put a night in Rovaniemi to visit Santa Village before driving back to Ivalo which takes 3.0-3.5 hours drive the next day.

Firstly, I want to express my gratitude to the company for their exceptional service. I didn't pay close attention to the instructions and ended up not reaching the meet-up point on time. Remarkably, they went out of their way to return and pick me up without any communication from me. At that moment, I was on the verge of giving up and heading back to my car to return to the hotel. However, the driver approached me and asked if I was waiting for the tour. I am truly thankful for their assistance.

As for the night itself, the sky was remarkably clear, creating the perfect setting for observing the aurora. The drive to the cabin took approximately 15 minutes, followed by a short hike up a small hill in the woods. An open area in front of the cabin allowed us to capture the mesmerizing beauty of the northern lights, and the clarity of the night sky also offered the opportunity for some breathtaking stargazing.

We had the experience of a lifetime! The forecasts suggested we would not see the aurora but we were lucky and it turned out to be unbelievably active. Our guide, Linda, was fantastic! She was relatively new but seemed like a seasoned pro. She took us to a beautiful spot with no other people (and out of the Arctic wind) and we shot photos for over an hour. The cabin/fire/dinner experience was amazing and we had the added good fortune of beautiful falling snow while cozy in the cabin eating yummy food and drinking hot chocolate. Linda’s background as a biologist and her knowledge of the environment and local fauna really rounded out what was a perfect experience.

Spending the evening hours in a wilderness teepee, enjoying the company and Irena/Maris enriching us with the history of the area and the northern lights. We enjoyed roasting food over the fire. While the cloud cover was too much for us to see the rare northern lights, the evening was fun overall!

Pure northern light tours can be a complete waste of money if there are NO LIGHTS. The craze for these tours are not because of the barbeque in the tepee or log cabin in the cold dark nights but purely for the hope of seeing the aurora . Unfortunately in the most COMMON occasion of no show , these are pure waste of money. If we all know that's it's a very unpredictable occurrence depending on several factors, why schedule these tours on daily basis and HOPE for the best!! Lapland is costly anyways and all these aurora tours are non refundable tours but are exorbitantly priced and there are no options for a repeat / refund. I have experience of 4 such tours who all ran it on hope but probably was pretty sure there will be no auroras. My advice to all aurora chasers would be to first research the weather and the aurora activity and book any of these at the very last minute. Aurora predictions are unreliable if checked 1-2 days ago and hence prior bookings can just waste all hope, effort and money.

There is no reliable way to predict Auroras, unfortunately! Only the weather can be predicted quite well, but it is often too pessimistic the forecast.

I was so lucky to be able to see the Northern Lights. It was a very good weather and it didn't take long for the amazing view to show itself.
The guide is very passionate and professional.
Lapland Welcome provides free outfits and equipment for customers. Don't worry too much if you don't have enough clothes or suitable shoes for this activity.
The campfire barbecue was great :)) And the traditional Finnish New Year celebration, the melting tin horseshoe, was just so cool.
      Highly recommended!!

Lapland Welcome sells a tour called Northern Lights (photograph tour), but in reality they do not take pictures for you, you need to bring your camera. Before hiring the service I sent an email to the company questioning if they had a camera and took pictures because I only have a cell phone on this trip. They said yes. I got the e-mails redeemed saved. When I got on the tour they did not take photos. I asked the guide to make a photo of me and he replied rudely. I ended up hiring a service that was cheaper than other companies in the area but that is of poor quality. Plus, it's a huge crowded bus, lots of people. Some of the people still got hurt on the tour. The cheap is expensive. Do not hire the service of this company if you want to have a good experience !!

Thank you for your feedback. We wonder this review as we make pictures on every Northern Lights tour and publish them on our web pages https://laplandwelcome.fi/anthonys-blog/ . We concentrate on taking pictures of Northern Lights and general pictures from the tour. Our blog has been awarded as the 14th best blog in Finland thanking activity in pictures and updates. Pictures of individuals can be tricky as some people don't want to be in pictures and some wish it. We have got the best place for following Northern Lights. We often see lights and take pictures on evenings when people usually don't see lights at all. We are a very old operator. We have run these tours like 20 years. Welcome to our famous Northern Lights tours!

First, we were blessed to be able to see the northern lights. Not that the company puts on the show for you but really depends on the statistics with the experience of the guide.

Second, our guide Sami was great. He’s really nice and knowledgeable! Even things he’s not sure about, he will google it for us. I had a camera on my own which I didn’t know is capable of taking the northern lights, thanks to Sami’s guidances. There were only 3 of us out in the dark & cold forest, it was great. He makes sure we are comfortable and warm all the time, and also that we are having a good time (which we did - 5 hours in the cold with non stop northern lights display; a memory that will forever be with us).

We prebooked the activity & the pick up was on time. We kinda waited at the wrong spot as there were two locations for the same name, but Sami came to look for us.

Thank you so much, Sami. Hope you had a good time with us too.

I first went on this tour for Sunday 10 March 2019. There were only 6 of us in the tour - so 1 van. Our guide, Jay, was friendly, professional, passionate and dedicated - he loved the outdoors and wanted us to see the Northern Lights. We drove for about an hour out of Rovaniemi to a large cottage where we then trekked uphill for about 15 minutes - the snow sometimes was up to our knees. At the end of the trek, there are 2 tee-pees (we only used 1) where we had a fire, hot chocolate/tea/coffee and snacks (pork sausage, chicken nuggets, corn on the cob - let them know if you have any food restrictions). We waited until midnight - it was a clear sky with lots of stars but no northern lights. We tried other spots on our way back but no luck.

I tried again the next night (same tour reduced rate) which was my last night in Rovaniemi. The forecast was good so there were about 35 people or so. We took multiple vans and trekked up. 2 tee-pees used this time. There was a faint line for the Northern Lights which then just became amazingly bright just after midnight. Totally breathtaking. Jay and the team again were very professional and keen on us seeing the lights. They kept the large group well managed.

Highly recommended though you can never guarantee seeing the lights.

Lapland Welcome team are great. You can get snow boots and warm protective clothing from them. Their office location / pick-up point is very central.

      Tips :
      1. I wore my 6 inch yellow Timberland boots on Day 1 with my own waterproof trousers. Was fine but with knee high snow, some snow slipped in and my toes were a little wet. The next night, i used their higher snow boots instead.

      2. Don't bundle up too warmly for the hike as you will overheat. Instead have layers to put on once you get to the top.

      3. Similarly, in the tee-pee next to the fire, remove layers so that you can warm up faster

      4. When viewing the lights, spend some time outside to get used to the night light. Do not switch on your torches. Switch off the flash on your camera.

      5. Even though it'll be cold, do wait outside especially near midnight for the Northern Lights. The most spectacular view we got only lasted 1 minute or so

      Enjoy!

My friends and I ordered the "Northern Lights by Car and on Foot Trip" on 2nd March, the meetup place which is also their office was quite easy to find in Rovaniemi. We were suggested to change our coats into their coverall suites and they also provided coldproof gloves and hats, all of them were superrrr warm so we didn't feel cold even in the minus 19 outside. We were so lucky that when the bus stopped in the middle of destination, we began to saw northern lights! It was amazing! Not only the green light but also red and purple light! For years I've not seen such many stars on the sky, and also shooting stars!

And then we reached the destination and climbed to the hill with snow aid stick and flashlight, after around 10 mins walk, we enjoyed the whole sky stars on the hill, warm ourself in front of bonfire, hot chocolate and sausage grilling (thanks again for the wonderful food and drink service!) Around 1.30am we headed to the city area of Rovaniemi.

Personally, I love what the tour guide explained to us with regards to the history and prediction of northern lights, their services are so nice and all tour guides are well organized. I highly recommend you guys choosing Lapland Welcome! The best service provider of the aurora trip!

We had a very interesting and cool Xmas with this tour where the staff was very professional and knowledgeable about Northern ligths in a heartbreaking landscape.

This is a not to miss activity, my suggestion is to look for Jay tour leader that besides his knowledge on the topic he was truly helping us to have a great experience.
