Overview
Due to new rules by the Catholic Archdiocese, trips inside St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 are not allowed without a licensed tour. Visit one of New Orleans oldest cemeteries with a guide who knows the history of the resting places of some of the city’s first residents. Plus, this guided tour of St. Louis Cemetery is short, so you can still fit in other activities during the day.
What to Expect
Meet for this St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 tour at the Backatown Coffee Parlour on Basin Street in New Orleans about 15 minutes before your tour time.

Once you get acquainted with your guide, set off on foot and walk one block to the cemetery. On the way over, your guide tells you about the area and how it was affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Arrive at St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, and continue inside the gates. Listen to stories about some of the first people buried in the cemetery as you stroll past the aboveground tombs and family vaults. Your tour also stops at the grave site of “voodoo queen,” Marie Laveau.

Your guided tour ends outside St. Louis Cemetery.

Cemetery tour

Michael was an amazing guide and gave great info. It was obvious he had a passion for his job and loved New Orleans and it’s history. Would highly recommend! We loved that the groups are small and more intimate than others!
