What to Expect
After boarding an air-conditioned coach in the French Quarter, follow the Lake Pontechartrain shoreline to Destrehan Plantation, the oldest plantation in the lower Mississippi Valley. Tour the carefully restored French colonial mansion with a costumed guide, learning about former inhabitants and the southern sugar cane industry. You'll also have a chance to explore the gardens and a museum dedicated to the 1811 slave revolt. Continue on to the Manchac Swamp for a wildlife tour in a covered boat that provides protection from weather in all seasons. Learn about swamp culture and the endangered ecosystem from a guide as you look for alligators, raccoons, snakes, birdlife, and giant rodents.
