This tour was one of the best walking tours we have taken(and we have taken many in many places). Chuck was engaging, very knowledgeable, and entertaining. I grew up in the Philly area and I still learned a lot from his tour especially about the early history of the city. It was such an added plus that he is a long time resident of this area and waved, said hello, or talked to many “locals” like him throughout our walk. We would heartily recommend this tour to anyone — most of it was on the side streets and alleyways which, in themselves, make this tour so worthwhile.

I loved learning about the histories of old and new mom-and-pop shops in Philadelphia and the everyday individuals who work there. I also loved learning about Isaiah Zagar, a Philadelphian artist who created beautiful glass murals on small streets and alleyways that we got to walk through. Our tour guide, Chuck, taught us about the history of the murals and pointed out interesting details about them. If you’re a food and art enthusiast, I highly recommend this tour. The food samples were delicious. Our tour guide Chuck was humorous, engaging, and super knowledgable.

Chuck is so personable, it felt like we walked through his home and he was sharing bits of how he is connected to the community. It was obvious he had taken the time to develop relationships with the restaurant owners. Being able to hear their stories was such a valuable part of the tour. We even learned about nautical mosaic murals and the artist in the neighborhood who has created the works of art.Oh and the food was delicious!! Just a fun and informative time - highly recommend it!

My husband and I took the Urban Adventures Italian Market Immersion and it was Awesome. Chuck is a retired professor, local to the neighborhood, so he had so much to share about the location, as well as the history of Philadelphia. We learned so much in such a short time. First we walked around the neighborhood where he showed us spectacular murals by Isaiah Zagar, made from handmade tiles, and broken pieces or glass, mirrors and random objects. We had seen the murals as we walked the streets before, but were able to appreciate the art and details after Chuck's explanation much much better. The Italian Market experience was great too. He took us to all the good places, had samples of cheese, pastries, nuts, balsamic vinegar, and others. All the vendors were very friendly and accommodating. What I enjoyed from the trip was that we never felt rushed. It was a very relaxed and friendly stroll with a wonderful host. Would highly recommend it!

We had a great experience. Our guide, Chuck, was knowledgable, personable, and everything you would want in a guide. We cannot praise him enough. We have visited the Italian Market a number of times but knew little about its history. Not only did we learn a lot, we got into the back rooms of a meat store including the cooler where the pigs hang all the way through the process to the cooking of whole hogs in giant ovens. We leaned about cheeses at DiBruno Brothers and sampled several types of cheese. We spent time tasting numerous oils and vinegars, sampling gelato at a different store and bread and pastries at another. Later that day we went back and shopped for a number of products using the 10% discount they offered us.
We highly recommend this tour to anyone, even locals, and if you get Chuck as you guide, consider yourself very fortunate.

Hello, and thank you so much for this excellent review! Chuck is indeed an incredible guide to have in the Italian Market. Few people know as much about that neighborhood as he does. We love offering guests the opportunity to see the "behind the scenes" operations of these iconic South Philly vendors. Glad you were able to take advantage of the 10% discount on the way back up the market. Lastly, and most importantly, we hope you and your loved ones are safe during these difficult times. When things become safer, we hope you join us again for another tour.

Chuck was amazing! He had a perfect pace, great story telling, and took extra time to make sure we got the full experience. We enjoyed so many stops and tastes along the streets of the Italian market and appreciated the outdoor art and quant alleys near South Street. Chuck made the city views just that much more special it was like having a friend in Philadelphia. He is the special sauce! A+++

Book this tour!! It was definitely worth it. Our tour guide, Chuck, really made the tour great. We would not have had such an enjoyable and educational time walking around this part of this City without him leading the way. He shared with us that he is a retired University professor and Philadelphia native. He loves this city and it showed! We learned about the history of one of the oldest markets in the US (over 100 years old) and sampled some items along the way. We also saw street art and learned more about the history of the City, William Penn’s plan for a “utopian” type society and the legendary “curse of William Penn.” The Penn statue on top of City Hall used to be the highest point in Philadelphia until the 1980’s when the mayor alllowed skyscrapers in. The legend goes that after that, all the Philly sports teams had a losing streak until a worker on one of the new tallest buildings added a mini statue of Penn to the top, then the teams started to win again.
On our tour, we sampled...
✅Sesame seed sprinkled fresh bread (with no preservatives)
✅Italian cookie drizzled with chocolate.
✅Italian Lemon Nougat (self purchase)
✅Chocolate covered espresso beans (self purchase)
✅Aged Balsamic Vinegar, Fig Vinegar and Coconut flavored White Balsalmic Vinegar (my choices- each could choose their own to sample)
✅Specialty cheese (can’t remember the name) coupled with spiced cashews
✅ Fresh (made today) Tortilla chips and fresh tomato salsa from a shop where the owners are from Central Mexico
✅Mandarin orange from the produce stand
Bonus: anything we self purchased, we received an extra 10% off for being on the tour.

Chuck was the most fantastic guide and I honestly feel like I walked away with a friend. I was the only one on the tour and being that it was my first time ever in Philly (and I was traveling alone) it was great to have Chuck leading the way. He shared with me really fascinating history about the city and the people there with a great reverence for the hard working people that have built the communities and businesses there. We sampled lots of goodies (pizzele, cheese, candy and tomato pie) and I got to get the inside story on Philly that made me appreciate the city much more than if I were just walking around on my own. The tour was dotted with sightings of the famous mosaic murals of Isaiah Zagar and ended at his Magic Gardens museum - such great pictures! It was such a perfect day, I highly recommend seeking out this tour and Chuck as well!

We had Howard for the Italian Market Tour but it was so much more and we absolutely loved it! His tour started with some wall artwork of a local artist and then progressed to the Italian market, then the Latino market and finally ending at the 2 famous cheesesteak restaurants Geno’s and Pat’s. He had so many stories about the many generations of the families running the stores in the Italian market! And the food we got to sample was absolutely delicious! We had amazing bread, tortillas, Italian candies, candied nuts, cheese, etc. And you can tell that Howard is definitely a foodie as he knows so much about all the foods and restaurants around!

What a great tour. Chuck our guide was excellent and combined history, art, food, drama and humor into a wonderful Friday morning. Learned a lot about Phildelphia and this “iconic” market, really was taken away by Lazart’s art on the walls of the homes around South street and beyond, delighted in Sarcone’s
Bread, diBruno’s cheese and sweet cashews, and Mexican bruschetta. All while listening to Chuck’s neighborhood experiences and his insight into Philadelphia history and the story behind the cheesesteak rivalry. Then Chuck left us with his list of the foot walks we could do to add to our experience and some of his favorite restaurants/eateries.
Thanks Chuck. It was an amazing day.
