What to expect
This small-group tour kicks off on South Street. Meet your guide and go for a stroll down this lively thoroughfare before heading south to the Italian Market. Thought to be the country’s oldest and largest outdoor market, the Italian Market has long served as a hub for food lovers. Learn about the area’s history from your guide, and pick up delicious souvenirs ranging from cheeses and chocolates to spices and olive oils (own expense). You also have the opportunity to chat with market vendors, and enjoy a special tour discount at a selection of stalls. As the tour continues, explore a number of Mexican, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cambodian shops: evidence of the area’s present-day culinary and cultural diversity. The tour concludes around lunchtime at the intersection of 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue—just steps from Pat’s and Geno’s rival cheesesteak restaurants, should you be tempted to sample Philadelphia’s most famous sandwich (own expense).

Best part of Philly!!!
This tour was my favorite experience in the city and I saw a lot. Our guide, Howard, was phenomenal. He was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the area. As a local, he was great friends with all the shop owners and all the owners treated us as cordially as they did him. He got us samples at many of the shops and told us the stories behind many family owned business. This tour is a must for any trip to Philly!

So much fun trying foods and learning about the history of the Italian Market!
We had Howard for the Italian Market Tour but it was so much more and we absolutely loved it! His tour started with some wall artwork of a local artist and then progressed to the Italian market, then the Latino market and finally ending at the 2 famous cheesesteak restaurants Geno’s and Pat’s. He had so many stories about the many generations of the families running the stores in the Italian market! And the food we got to sample was absolutely delicious! We had amazing bread, tortillas, Italian candies, candied nuts, cheese, etc. And you can tell that Howard is definitely a foodie as he knows so much about all the foods and restaurants around!

9th Street Experience par excellence!
Apr 2021
Nicole Novack is an excellent guide. She knows the area so well, and took such pleasure in sharing favourite spots with us. The history of the arrival to Italians to Philly, different families and how they helped or were helped by others on their way up, the strong sense of community, all that left me loving Philly! The treats we were able to enjoy along the way, some bread, chocolates, cheeses made it all so much more fun and worthwhile. And being able to share this experience with other friends was great too.

Thank you so much for this great review! The story of immigration to Philly is such an important part of the city. So many neighborhoods like Bella Vista continue to be shaped by it. That is what makes our tour of the Italian Market area so great....it's the perfect combination of food, history and culture. And having an expert guide like Nicole there to lead you through the streets of that community is what makes it truly memorable.

Great Tour
Mar 2021
This was a great tour! Our guide, Howard, was wonderful. It is very obvious that he loves this city. He describes the history and people with great love and pride. It makes you want to move here. The stories of immigrants and how they contributed to the history and success of Philly were priceless. We even got to sample some of the wonderful Italian and Mexican foods. I cannot recommend this tour enough. It is a must.

Thank you Jan! Much of Philly's history was built by immigrants and the incredibly rich cultures have survived in many of our neighborhoods, especially around the "Italian Market" (which is much more than Italian). Howard has incredible passion for the city, and he knows all the spots to grab some delicious bites.

Nina was a wonderful guide... Very knowledgeable and fun to be around. She also provided us with delicious Italian foods. This was a very good tour and it made me want to visit the Italian stores again. Worked highly recommend. Not for young children, however.
