This was the highlight of our recent NY visit.
Lyall escorted us (a UK family of 5) around Central Park alongside another guest. It was great to venture further into the park than ever before and hear the history and stories behind many of the landmarks. We particularly enjoyed the twisty, secluded woody areas which were full of trees and birdlife - you wouldn't think you were in New York!
Lyall was a great host, plenty of stories and jokes along the way and he wasn't 'over-the-top' which we were a little worried about (didn't want a big mass participation event).
Now Lyall - you did say we were the best looking group you'd had all year and you'd get those photos up, so we look forward to seeing them on your site. :)
Would highly recommend this walk.
Thanks for a great experience Lyall.

Lyle was a perfect guide. Gave us enough information to keep it interesting but did not overwhelm us as other guides did during the week. He was personable and made for a most enjoyable walk through central park.

Lyle was a great guide and very knowledgeable from a true New Yorker's perspective.
He knew the history of all of the main attractions and could answer other topics as people had questions.
Definitely worth the money and we left a big tip as he earned it. (i.e. 50%)

Lyle was a great guide and very knowledgeable of Central Park. He even pointed out where certain movies were filmed! Worth the money, plus great exercise. The tour went a little longer than advertised, so allow extra time after. Highly recommend!

We arrived at the meeting spot a little early for the 9am Central Park Tour, got a
coffee and enjoyed the view of the park and Columbus Circle.
Lyall is very friendly and welcomed our group. We learned so much about
the park, history, statues and gardens. He showed us photos about the
park's development. He also knew interesting things about the buildings that surround Central Park. Great walking pace, wear comfortable shoes. Plan some time after the tour to sit, relax and enjoy one of the ponds or Cafe gardens. Lyall is a skilled guide and we will definitely be taking one of his other tours. We highly recommend Manhattan and Beyond Tours !

Our guide Lyle combined history with contemporary info about the park. We liked the pics on his iPad of the late 1800s park compared to today. He showed us different areas of the park: some more formal, others like unspoiled woods.

Lyall was great! Though I was born in NY I really had never seen many parts of Central Park. Lyall took us through from the Southwest Corner at Columbus Circle up through many iconic settings for popular movies up through the Ramble (very special place), The Lake and ended with Strawberry fields, Imagine mosaic and the Dakota.
He was very informed, had some good jokes and some that made me groan, and I am so glad I signed my husband and I up for his tour.
I recommend Lyall’s (Manhattan & Beyond) tour very high and rank it as one of the best I have taken in the world. A very joyful way to get in a good walk and see New York’s heart.
Thank you, Lyall!

Do you have to pay a fee to go and walk around by yourself? We don't want a tour.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the great review but I do not believe it was I who led this tour. Can you tell me the company that you took this tour with?
Lyall

We took a walking tour led by one of the Central Park Conservancy volunteers, not a commercial company. They offer several tours which you can find at their website. The title of the tour cited in the previous answer doesn't appear to be part of the Conservancy offerings. The nice thing about the Conservancy tours, is the reasonable fee you pay goes to support maintenance and operation of Central Park ... not in to some tour operators pocket.

How long does the tour usually last and how many miles will we be walking?
Amanda H
Leeds, UK59 contributions
Hi. Our tour lasted a couple of hours, we didn't see the whole park by any means but our tour took in many of the areas of particular interest. We were shown the fountain, Strawberry Fields, The Mall and other places which featured in films, etc and given a little background information where appropriate. We are not seasoned walkers by any stretch of the imagination, I didn't log how far we walked but, at a guess, it was between two and three miles.

How do you use a Sightseeing Pass to guarantee a tour spot?
Amanda H
Leeds, UK59 contributions
Unfortunately I can’t help you with that. We booked directly through an app called Get your Guide which offered many options for tours/trips. We didn’t have a Sightseeing Pass. It might be worth contacting GyG and asking what the position is though. Sorry.
