Any city I travel too, I always try and find a food tour and after having a spare day in New York after I finished my work commitments, I booked myself on this tour. Not only do you get some immense food included in this tour, but you hear fascinating stories on immigrants that came to city many years ago. The guide was really informative, answered all my questions and provided on some tips of other restaurants to try on my next trip to NYC. A fab tour that I'd recommend to anybody that wants to get away from the normal tourist haunts and learn about something slightly different.

One of the best food tours I have had in any city! Alex, our tour guide was great - super knowledgeable and friendly! We learnt some interesting facts and history about New York from him with photos from across different periods, which I otherwise wouldn't have learnt of. The choice of food spots was interesting - it's not the typical NY food or places you would expect to be taken to, which made this tour unique for me - the selection of restaurants and food items too was inspired by the history of the city and how it has evolved over time. The tastings/portions were small, especially considering the tour price, but the focus on NY history, facts, and generally how interactive and fun the tour ended up being, made up for that!

My wife and I went on this tour recently and it surpassed our highest expectations. We were blown by how knowledgeable the guide was, how out delicious the food was, and most importantly, how kind and personable our guide was; she was fantastic in every way. The places we went were all extremely interesting, and the experience was well-worth the investment.

I would recommend this to any New York City native or someone visiting the city for the first time. I can’t imagine someone not having a great time on this tour.

This tour was awesome! For me personally it was the best tour I’ve done in NYC, so I would definitely recommend, especially because of Micaela, who was the best tour guide ever! She knew so much about the culture and history of the lower east side. The tour was so much fun with the group and the tour guide. We learnt so much about the history and how how the culture and food developed in this part of the city. Definitely got some items I’ve never tried before and probably wouldn’t have come across without this tour (like Knishes).

One of the best tours!
Thanks so much to Micaela, who really seemed to enjoy her job. Thank you so much for all the nice recommendations and insider tips of what else to see in NYC!

For me, this tour delivered. Our guide, Bruce, was an experienced storyteller and was authentically local. With his vast knowledge, he wove together some of NYC's rich and storied past, what immigrant life was like in the early years, and how the city has changed over time. Personal anecdotes were peppered in for added interest. The tasty food samples were served fresh and hot and were a good representation of the iconic foods from each area. The empanadas were outstanding!

I especially enjoyed the small group format. An added bonus was Bruce offering tips to experience more of the city, including the hidden gems that you won't necessarily find in all the tourism material.

Bruce had a wealth of information to impart to our group that hailed from across the US and Europe. He was friendly and informative and the food stops did not disappoint. Despite a less than perfect day in terms of weather, we had a very positive experience and would highly recommend this tour.

Last year, we were very impressed with our Boston North End food tour by Urban Adventures, so we eagerly looked forward to the Tenements, Tales, and Tastes Tour. It did not disappoint. Micaela was very informative and kept the tour fun and interesting. The food was delicious and paired well with the immigrant history of NYC. This was a highlight of our family trip to New York. While our teenaged boys may not have tried all the foods (more samples for Mom and Dad!), they learned so much.
Of note, I purchased the tour through Groupon at a significant discount, but I would not hesitate to pay full-price.

Exceptionally informative and fun tour. The discussion of NYC's immigration story as told through food was a great way to anchor the interesting neighborhoods that I wanted my teens to appreciate. The food itself was delicious, but the real impact of the tour was the story of the city and its neighborhoods. I couldn't imagine a more interesting way to dive deep on that. Well done!

Our first time in NYC and we eagerly would like to return! Erik did a fantastic job with the food/neighborhood/architecture/history tour. It seemed like a whole bunch of tours rolled into one, and it was great! It was a miserable, cold & rainy day, so there were only 4 of us on the tour (which was awesome)! Erik was mindful of the rain and we ducked under scaffolding as often as possible. We are from Florida, so the weather conditions were foreign to us...but it added to the experience :)

My favorite food tasting was the dumplings in china town! So yummy.

We highly recommend!

Greg was a terrific guide because he is very knowledgeable about both immigration to New York and the Lower East Side today. We enjoyed tasty dumplings in Chinatown, chocolate cannolis in Little Italy and potato knishes in the first Jewish deli that sold knishes in New York. It was fascinating to learn about why dumplings, haircuts, housing and everything else in Chinatown is so inexpensive compared to other neighborhoods. When he is not leading tours, Greg is an actor so be prepared for a lot of fun if you are lucky enough to get him as your guide.
