Must try when in San Diego
First time sailing and we had a great time. We booked a 3 hour sunset sail during dolphin season (May 6, 2024) and we saw a lot of seals and dolphins, some even swimming close to the boat. The weather was perfect for that chill sunset vibes, drinks and snacks are included. Plenty of space for our group of 4. Captain Dave is an excellent captain with great boat music! He also provides some info on areas that we were seeing while sailing :) There's also a restroom that is nice and clean. Will definitely book again.

      Amazing time on the water
For my husband's 55th Birthday I booked us a Sunset Sail with Sail San Diego. My husband and I are scuba divers, and he grew up on the lakes in the Midwest. By far, this was an AMAZING experience. We loved the small amount of just 6 passengers, and the captain. From the time I booked the event until we were back in port, the time was top notch. Genuine, personable staff. Captain Dave gets 10 stars from us. Great sailing playlist, history background, and well rounded. Thank you all for making my husbands Birthday phenomenal.

      Not enough time under sail
Spent very little time sailing, most of the time just cruised around the bay. Captain Jake didn’t provide much commentary or information about San Diego. We were disappointed.

An outstanding Sail, even if we didn’t spot any whales!
We had an outstanding morning whale watching sail with Captain Dave this past weekend. Even though we didn’t see any whales, he worked hard to ensure we saw other wildlife. From the time we stepped foot in the boat to the time we returned, sail San Diego and Captain Dave provided a first class experience. You won’t go wrong in booking with Sail San Diego!

      Pleasant sailing experience.
We sailed with Chris who owns the 43 ft sailboat. He was an experienced skipper and handled the main sail/jib from the back of the boat with a variety of winches and pulleys. Because we were concerned about sea sickness, we sailed mainly in San Diego Bay, saw 3 aircraft carriers, North Island, bait barges, sea lions on buoys, seals, dolphins, and the Cornado Bridge. The weather was overcast. We had great snacks and a few drinks. Chris was knowledgable about the Navy boats and North Island. We sailed for 3 hours.

      Terrific Charter!
We had a lovely sunset sail out into the Pacific Ocean. Our Catalina 40 was nicely equipped and spotless. The captain was super friendly and enthusiastic to share his love of the sea with his guests. Best of all unlike the typical "booze cruise" we had only six guests on board and the captain was more than happy to let us participate in sailing the boat or sit back and enjoy the ride. We also enjoyed chatting w the other guests who turned out to be from the area. Without a doubt this was the highlight of our trip to San Diego. Highly recommend Sail San Diego!

      Awesome Evening
The sailing experience was wonderful and the Captain was great, very informative, funny and really knew the area, plus he had the fastest boat. While the evening was overcast and a little chilly, blankets and the conversation warmed everyone up.

      Highly recommend!
I can't say enough good things about this company! I called before booking and they were super-helpful in guiding my choice of cruise. This was an anniversary gift for my husband after a long week of family celebrations and a he loved it! Our captain was David, who also worked as a harbor guide on the big harbor cruise boats, and he was full of detailed info about the bay, San Diego history, marine life, etc. A longtime sailor himself, he made us feel right at home on the boat, and even the cruise member who declared himself "not a water sport person" seemed relaxed and happy. The boat itself was clean and tidy--though be prepared, marine toilets are more like airline toilets. Don't expect the Ritz. There were plenty of snacks and drinks, but because it was basically the dinner hour, I asked if I could bring sandwiches, etc. Turns out *lots* of people do this! (No red wine because of stains, and I'd recommend bringing enough to share.) We were paired with a delightful group of four friends who were laidback and fun, the bay was smooth, the weather clear. We watched the the waterfront buildings turn golden as the sun set over Point Loma. It was just what the doctor ordered!

Happy Captain Greg was the consummate tour guide. His dry wit and knowledge of the area kept us all entertained and interested. After the wind blew my hat off and into the water, Greg did not hesitate to demonstrate his skills in retrieving it, much to the delight of the passengers. SSD is a very well run and laid back tour company with a fine new fleet of boats. I'll be back again next year!

What a wonderful sail today! My husband and I are older folks and have been laying low and socially distant, so it was a special treat to be out on the water, unconcerned about the world for those three hours. The boat was new, immaculate and spacious, and the sun and breeze were lovely. "Happy" Capt. Greg, one of the most seasoned boat captains anywhere, never removed his mask (though we were able to take ours off) and provided a great mix of interesting facts about San Diego, boats and water, as well as bringing us close (without being intrusive) to dolphins, sea lions, and sea birds. We love his idea of a monthly "membership" and will stay tuned to learn if it becomes a thing!

My husband and I booked this excursion during a recent trip to San Diego and we couldn't have been more impressed. There was one other group of 3 people on board with us so only 5 passengers plus the captain in total. It was an absolutely incredible experience. This was our first time on a sailboat and Captain Frank was very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions we had and also offered some fun facts and information as we sailed along. This was our absolute favorite thing we did on our trip. It felt like a really great value given the fact that there were only 3 other passengers on the boat with us, making it feel almost like a private tour. Highly recommend this excursion!

Boat Captain asked what our group of 5 wanted to see. We agreed to head out of harbor a few miles past Point Loma. The captain did a great job explaining the naval subs, the dolphin training and all history in the area. We would not have gotten that on a trip around the harbor. Best 3 hours on on vacation. Thanks sail San Diego

Very impressed with our first sailing adventure. When arrived, we waited a few minutes to board. Once onboard, we were greeted by Captain Greg and a Happy Anniversary welcome banner. To our surprise, we basically had the sailboat to ourselves. We had a wonderful time site seeing the bay. Capitan Greg was an amazing host, he kept us entertained.

We haven’t tried any other sailing companies, however, base on our experience they will be hard to beat.

    Happy sailing

My husband and I have not been out for almost 7 months since Covid exploded. We thought we'd celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary differently this year (meaning at home). I happen to see Sail San Diego's ad on Facebook, 5 days before our anniversary. Since my husband used to crew for races on a sailboat, this was such a lovely and welcome idea for an excursion! We booked the sail for just the two of us even if they can allow 4 people. Prepared some food and drinks to take (even if they offer light snacks and drinks) and had an awesome mid day sail! From Cal, the manager who books the reservations, to Theo, our captain, our trip was just awesome and perfect and safe. That day (Oct. 5) was a hot one for San Diego and the wind decided to give us a good "heeling" (about 7.5 knots). It felt good to be out on the water, secure and safe and just forget about the world for a few hours. Theo was the expert and managed the boat well. The whole boat was clean and in pristine condition. The bathroom was impressively clean! Most boats usually are not. This was such a great experience that we're considering doing it again once whale watching season begins! Hopefully too, by summer we can bring along friends to make it more enjoyable. Definitely a must try especially since San Diego has pretty much year-round sailing season!

We were scheduled for a whale watching tour but the weather decided we were not going. Cal switched us to the afternoon group sail and even though the waters were choppy Capt' Jake sailed us up close to a docked aircraft carrier, docks with many seals, and very close to the San Diego shoreline to see the city from the water perspective. It was completely different than the other two previous sails I'd been on with Sail San Diego. It was a perfect delight and we loved it. Once again, cannot wait to go back.

Our work team enjoyed sailing as a team building event. There were 9 of us so we split into 2 boats. The first half of our trip was a race between the 2 boats and the second half was a leisurely sail through the bay.

Our team liked getting to help with the sailing. Theo was our boat’s captain and he did a good job teaching us about sailing and making it a fun experience for our team.
