We went on two 4x4 tours. First with Blaine in Arches and second with Mike in Canyonlands. Both were excellent for very different reasons. Both took us in the back way which avoided lines and crowds and gave us an outstanding way into the parks which would have had long wait times or been shut down (Arches because of overcrowding) otherwise.
Arches
Blaine took us on an excellent tour after picking up us at the hotel. He gauged our appetite for adventure and bumpiness and brought us up stone staircases in the 4 x 4 safely and enjoyably. He showed us and explained both dinosaur fossils, flora and fauna and it was obvious he enjoyed the outdoors and his work. He took us to spot where there were no (zero) other people explained the area and then stood back for us to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in our own way and at our leisure. He was great.
Canyonlands
Again we were met at our hotel but this time by Mike. Mike is a character. He mainly does rappelling and overnight camping trips. He took us on winding, switchbacks that appeared harrowing but he did it safely and again knew how to navigate the roads and land safely. He knew the area well and explained the rock formations and the parts of the park we went to. Mike also enjoyed his work and the outdoors.
I would recommend this tour company for Moab and while they were not inexpensive they were competitively priced and absolutely worth it.
Based on the two guides I want to go to a staff meeting at NavTec because I bet it’s a riot.

My 8 year old son and I did an afternoon trip with Tristan in late November to Arches. It was truly one of the best days we’ve had in recent memory and one of our favorite adventures in Moab. Tristan was incredibly patient and gracious with my 8 year old’s barrage of questions and jokes, and he did a fantastic job engaging my kid in the amazing nature and beauty of Arches. The trip was educational and fun, and never once did we feel rushed. We loved the dinosaur tracks and the short hikes to Eye of the Whale and Skyline arches. My California kid was fascinated by all of the patches of snow throughout the park and the pockets of ice in the shadow of the arches. Tristan matched my son’s enthusiasm with kindness and positive energy, even helping him to find a patch of ice he could crack at the end of the trip. My kid generally hates long car rides, but Tristan’s friendly banter and sharing of his wide scientific knowledge made the entire day a blast. My eight year old literally skipped to Tristan’s jeep at the end of the day because he was having so much fun.
Tristan made great recommendations that we followed up on during the subsequent days of our visit: In addition to checking out Lin Ottinger’s impressive Moab Rock Shop for the free dinosaur bone and sliding down the massive red sand dunes across from the park, we went back to Arches on our own to do the Landscape Arch trail and to check out the windows sections. We also went back to the beautiful La Sal Mountains viewpoint at sunset. All of these were great recommendations from Tristan.
Arches is easy to drive through on your own to see many spectacular sites, but we are so glad we started our visit off-roading through the back entrance with Tristan. We loved the silence (even hearing the beating of a raven’s wings!) and experiencing the park without the crowds. We also learned so much from our afternoon with Tristan that gave us helpful perspectives for the rest of our time in Moab! I would heartily recommend this tour with Navtec, and if you have kids, definitely ask for Tristan. We couldn’t have asked for a kinder, more patient guide! (Tristan, if you read this, don’t miss Point Lobos State Park for the amazing lichen if you make it out to California again!) Thank you from a grateful mom!

Our tour guide Rick picked us up at our hotel in Moab and after a brief conversation about what we wanted to see, he customized a tour of Moab that quite honestly blew our minds. He was so friendly, informative, kind (especially to our 9 and 7 year old boys), and he made sure that we had the tour experience that we were paying for. He was also an exceptional driver and since I’m a 4X4 enthusiast myself he took the harder routes and really showed my family a FUN time. Rick also got out of the rig and walked us around the different areas we went to, educating us all about what we were seeing and taking so many great family pictures for us along the way. After the tour was over, he gave us a map of Arches where he highlighted locations that we didn’t see on the tour and made recommendations of where to watch the sunset (we went to Double Arch with the kiddos on his recommendation and we were not disappointed!). End of the day, Rick was awesome, he made our tour epic and I would absolutely book a tour with Navtec again. PRO TIP: Ask for Rick!!!!!!!
Also, Thanks Rick!

It's hard to review this, as we did not go on it. I would like to leave a review of the company itself. About a week before my trip, I began looking into a tour in Moab. This company had some of the highest reviews, so I contacted them about a possible teacher discount; they said they did not offer one, but to look into other possible discounts. I found a free coupon code and entered it into their site (a tab for coupon codes). It worked! I signed all the forms and was ready to go. The day before my trip, I began getting emails/texts and phone calls asking for my remaining balance. I let them know that from my end, everything was complete. They said no, that I must pay the full balance. I sent screenshots of the confirmation and an email from Kim at NAVTEC showing that I had been encouraged to look for discounts. They said, "We do not accept free coupons or comply with any third party coupons." They said that unless I paid in full, the tour was cancelled. So even though there was nothing on their site showing they prohibited this, and even though I was able to book it this way, they said no. I offered to pay 1/2, as I know they are a company and need to make a profit. Again they said all or nothing. We went back and forth on this topic for several texts messages and they even acknowledged that this was not great, as I was only in Moab for one day from Alabama with my two little boys, but they would not budge. The last text was very patronizing, letting me know that I could easily do the Arches on my own with my kids. I know I can do it on my own, I've been a single mom for 4 year and Can do it. I was hoping for someone else to drive us/tell us about the Arches.
We did have an amazing trip on our own, but I am deeply disappointed in this company. If they do not accept coupon codes, it should not be an option. Even with my compromising and offering to pay 1/2 they would not budge.

On Saturday morning, we went into Arches National Park and spent three hours on all of the paved roads and did a few short hikes. On Sunday afternoon, we had contracted with NAVTEC EXPEDITIONS and Adam was our tour guide. The trip was the "Moab: Half-Day Arches National Park 4x4 Driving Tour and Sunset."
We went on every off-road trail in the entire park and were fortunate enough to see not only the Willow Springs dinosaur tracks, but a number of arches and rock formations that less than 1% of the park visitors ever see. We were lucky enough that the other couple paired with us for this adventure had also already done the paved portions of the park. Adam was both daring and careful at the same time with the skill to do both soft sand as well as slick rock off-roading with Navtec's Lexus version of the Land Cruiser.

I booked the Canyonlands and Arches full day tour and it was cancelled with less than a 24 hour notice. At first, Navtech said it was because it was a last minute booking (I booked over a month in advance). I pointed that out and they said “oh well we’ve had a medical emergency”. It was impossible to find another booking somewhere else with only 12 hours notice. They ALSO cancelled my calm water cruise the next day. I understand things happen, but not TWICE. I spent $600+ and still haven’t had it returned. Book at your own risk or go with someone more reputable.

Planned this trip two weeks prior due to the great reviews. We were notified two days prior that our trip would be canceled if they could not get one other person aboard. We offered to pay for the extra ticket as we were only going to be in Moab for a day. When we arrived office staff was great!! Our driver Doug showed up and we began our trip. We were near the entrance of the park when the air conditioning went out in the car. Doug then turned around and said it’s to hot to take the trip without air. Actually it wasn’t even that hot but no problem as he was the guide. We spent half an hour wasted and returned back to the store to exchange vehicles; however there was no other vehicle available and our trip got canceled. Money was immediate returned just inconvenient. My husband and I decided to just discover the park ourselves and glad we saved that $375. The weather was perfect for hiking and the park was easy to travel and see. For future reference make sure your vehicles are working properly and have a guide that does not give up on the trip especially when the weather was very tolerable!!

There was some confusion about Covid protocols and the number of occupants in the vehicle. This was ultimately resolved so that we felt very comfortable. If you’re concerned about Covid, you might want to consider booking a private tour.
Our guide Matt was better than we could have asked for. He knows the backroads well and was very flexible to show us all that we wanted, and other things he thought we’d enjoy (we did!) that we didn’t know to ask for. He knows a lot about botany and geology and we learned cool stuff. He obviously loves being a guide and off-roading. We marveled at his driving! Really nice person too. We really enjoyed his guiding and his company. Thanks Matt!

Our guide Damon took us on a 1/2 day sunset tour of Arches in 'Sweet Alice', an older but still perky Toyota 4-Runner. Damon was personable, knowledgeable, and very entertaining! Also extremely important - he was skillful in keeping us upright as we traversed the rocky terrain. This was an unforgettable experience and great fun! Our only complaint was that for us in the back seat, it was hard to hear much of what Damon was saying over the noise of the Jeep. We suggest using a mic or adding a speaker of some sort to make the tour even more enjoyable. Thank you Damon, for a memorable day!

All elements of the excursion were exactly as advertised including departure time, sites visited, and return time. The arches and formations visited were stunning and were generally more impressive in comparison to the formations accessible from the drivable roads of the park. Our guide, Matt, was exceptionally knowledgeable, competent on what appeared to be impossible trails, and personable. Both my wife and I felt that this tour was one of our best travel investments in a long time.

The trip was definitely bumpy and hot and we were in and out of the 4x4 so I’m not sure a dog would fare well there.

I am sorry I am just seeing this, as you may have already gone. The vehicle we were in only holds 4 people and the tour guide. I am not sure if they have larger vehicles, but judging where we went, I dont think they can go much bigger in size. You need a small SUV with 4 wheel drive to get where he took us.

Hi all - looks like there is quite a bit of confusion on various websites about the $30 vehicle park pass. Spoke with Angela at Nav Tec to try to clarify. Ideally, you should be able to purchase the $30 pass online, however, that's not working at the moment. So feel free to call Angela at 435-259-7983 to confirm that you can purchase the park pass the day of your tour at the entrance through Nav Tec. If anyone hears differently, please share!

Arches was great with our Navtech guide. We went into the backroads to see amazing sites. Canyonlands is very different and you can drive and stop for some great pix. Get the $20 for one year pass and you can go to all the parks for free. Or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

It looks like we have to pay the entrance fee to get into Arches N. Park as part of the 4X4 adventure. Do we need a timed entrance pass, and if so if going on the AM tour, what time do we sign up for? Is the cost for 3 travelers in the 4X4 vehicle $30.00 to enter Arches? Is that in addition to the cost of the tour?

Yes, you will need a park pass to get into Arches. We had an annual pass that we used but because of the line up they actually drove us in the back way and we didn't need the pass. This may or may not happen depending on how long the line up will be on the day you tour. Hope this helps.
