    What to Expect
Visit: Pukaha National Wildlife Centre, 85379 State Highway 2 Mount Bruce, Masterton 5881 New Zealand

Open daily from 9:00am to 4:30pm, Pukaha National Wildlife Centre is New Zealand longest-running conservation centre. Home to a variety of New Zealand birds and animals. It is the only place in the world where you can view a white kiwi.

The daily talks start at 10:30am when we feed our two Takahe - with only 300 left in the world, these flightless birds were thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered just over 65 years ago.

At 11:30am you will be given the opportunity to feed a Tuatara. These animals have remained unchanged since the time of the Dinosaurs! After this at 12pm, it is time for either a Kiwi chick feed or a Gecko talk.

Around this time, you may want to head over to our Wild Cafe overlooking the Takahe enclosure for lunch.

At 1:30pm join in on an Eel feeding where we give our resident Long Fin Eels some food and discuss their amazing journeys to mate. Following this at 2:15pm, we talk about our North Island kokako - the only one in an aviary in New Zealand!

Finally, at 3pm is the Kaka circus. We give our wild native birds a snack and these cheeky parrots give our visitors a show of all their acrobatic skills.

In addition to all of this, you also have the opportunity to enjoy a 2-hour bush walk in restored native bush.

Pukaha Mount Bruce is situated right on State Highway 2 just 20 minutes north of Masterton - right in the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. There is ample parking space.

Great place to commune with nature. Walk through native bush and see and listen to Birds unique to New Zealand. Staff are super friendly and always happy to show and tell you of the work that they do here.

Let’s be honest, New Zealand wildlife can be a little underwhelming. No polar bears or bright flamingos or exciting kangaroos. The birds are kinda dull coloured and a bit stand-offish. But the bush is beautiful and the work these guys are doing is inspiring. The eel feeding is

As the title says, I REALLY wanted to be able to give this place a 5 star review. The people there are so friendly and passionate about the place. There has been a lot of thought gone into the entrance/cafe and new buildings around the centre and the bush is beautiful but that

Thank you so much for your feedback and review! We are quite different to other places locally, as you appreciated and want to thank you again for contributing towards our captive breeding programmes. As breeding season has just started, the kiwi eggs you got to see were the first of the season and have now hatched and the aviary birds are on their way to another successful season! We agree Aviary 5 is very much like a scene from Jurassic Park, which is why it is currently in the development stage to make it a bit more useful! We have a funding application lodged so watch this space.

Stopped on a campervan roadtrip with husband & baby for some fresh air. Couldn't believe the size & quality of the centre. It really blew us away. Beautifully natural & creative facility. The team were extremely passionate too. Our only wish is that we had more time to stop!

This is an amazing little oasis in the Wairarapa. The dedication of so many people has resulted in an amazing sanctuary. The gallery has some really clever visual depictions of life in the past and it was fabulous to get out of the car, stretch our legs and wander through some
