Guided Ascent of Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain: When you make an ascent with us you will not just be tagging along – we will share a wealth of historical, geological and natural history which these mountains have in abundance. We are very passionate about this area and it shows. Guests ages 16 and up can attend. It is worth mentioning before you proceed that any ascent of Ireland's highest mountain should only be undertaken if you feel you have the required level of fitness. You will be hiking over tough strenuous mountain terrain that does not have trails for at least 6 hours. The route is over 11 kmtrs long and within that there is 1000mtrs of ascent and decent! We have found that people have previously underestimated the climb so it is necessary to state this. Waterproof / windproof jacket and over trousers ( breathable fabric recommended but not essential ) Comfortable Clothing NO JEANS / DENIM Hiking Boots Fluid Packed Lunch Back Pack ( essential ) Spare Fleece / Warm Layer for the summit

First time climber, would highly recommend using a guide. Peirce was able to share much information about the mountain and climbing in general which was very helpful. We got first hand experience of just how quickly and dramatically the weather can change and would quite literally have been lost without him. I hope to climb again soon and will be using a guide again for this reason. Kerry Climbing were diligent, professional and experienced and well worth the cost of the guide. Will be recommending to friends.

Thank you very much and we appreciate your honest review, it is always good for others to hear of first hand experience on the mountain as a client. We are delighted that your whole experience with Kerry Climbing was so positive. All our guides are so experienced on the mountain and it really is assuring, particularly when the weather turns, as it often does. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you back here soon. I had a Brilliant day on Howling Ridge with Piaras. It poured rain for the day and we couldn’t see much at all as the majority of the climb was in the clouds but I felt very safe every second of the climb Despite the ridiculous exposure. We had mighty craic and I learned a huge amount.

Piaras’s knowledge of Carrauntoohil is second to none, and when our climb was finished after 6-7 hours on the mountain he got a call to go back up with the Kerry Mountain Rescue team to tend to a woman in need, and off he went with a smile on his face.

Before the day I had climbed the mountain a couple of times up the devils ladder - unprepared and without much knowledge, and I’d say that even if you’re able to do that, you’ll have a MUCH better day with a guide and you’ll learn a huge amount more. Especially if you’re travelling to Kerry from afar.

I’d highly recommend booking with Kerry Climbing, from booking online to the climb itself, everything was 10000% professional and I plan on climbing with them Again in the future.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and super well done on a mighty climb in not ideal conditions!! Though, I will add, the end of the day satisfaction makes it worth it regardless of the weather. Yes, Piaras really is amazing at his job and his knowledge of the whole area, his interest in history, geology and local folklore always adds to the enjoyment of the day. We look forward to welcoming you back here in the near future. Thanks again. All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing

I cannot recommend Kerry Climb enough after a brilliant experience climbing Carrauntoohill with them last weekend. From the initial contact I had with them when making the booking to the hike itself on the day. All the information they provided via email in advance to prepare for the day was very helpful as it listed what to bring, what to expect etc. I had previously done Carrauntoohill via the Devils Ladder but this time I booked O Sheas Sully route and I was a bit apprehensive as I knew it was going to be a tougher/longer route and I hadn't done a climb like this in a while but they put me at ease.

On the day itself we had Mike as our guide and he was so friendly, knowledgable and helpful at all times. I'm not going to lie that hike was the toughest I have ever done, physically it beat me. There was two or three times my legs did not want to go any further and I was trailing behind the rest of the group but Mike always waited for me along with the group and on two occasions he even came back down to me to guide me and encourage me. At one point I also took a little tumble and he was so caring bandaging up my hand, giving me a pair of his gloves and bringing me to the top of the group so I was right behind him as we made it to the summit - I honestly would not have made it to the top without his guidance and support he is a credit to the Kerry Climbing team.

Thanks so much to Mike and the team at Kerry Climbing for a wonderful experience from start to finish and guiding us up and down safely on Irelands highest mountain. I would definitely recommend them as your go to when choosing a guided ascent and I know I'll definitely be doing another one with them in the future.

Thanks so much for leaving such positive feedback, it is so greatly appreciated. Delighted to hear you enjoyed your experience with KerryClimbing from booking to the day of the climb. Congratulations on summiting Ireland's highest via Brother O' Sheas Gully, what a huge tick off the bucket list. Thanks so much for all of your lovely compliments, I will make sure to pass them on to Mike, it's great to hear. Well done on getting up to the top, even though you weren't feeling it, what an accomplishment. We are looking forward to seeing you again in the future for another amazing day out in the mighty MacGillicuddy's Reeks. Kindest regards, Orlaith, Mike and all the team at KC.

I had a fantastic day ascending and descending Carrauntoohil. Piaras led our small group of eager climbers up through O'Shea's (Raven's) Gully, over the summit of Carrauntoohil and back down the other side, all the while giving small lessons in Irish, geology, climbing etiquette, and keeping us safe. I recommend KerryClimbing to anyone seeking to reach the summit of Carrauntoohil. There is none better.

Thank you so much for leaving such a positive and informative review! We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your experience so greatly. Great to hear you enjoyed the Irish and geology lessons, it's lovely to know some background about the place that you spend the day. Well done on remembering the old name for Brother O' Shea's Gully, Eisc Na bhFiach, means the gully of the ravens, as their distinct "caw" echoes around the hanging valley. Congratulations on ticking off Corrán Tuathail, what a huge tick off the bucket list! Kindest regards, Orlaith, Piaras and all the team at Kerry Climbing.

KerryClimbing provided a brilliant experience! Our guide Piaras provided a wealth of knowledge on ecology, local history and folklore about the Reeks. He did the walk at the groups pace, was motivating and great craic which helped to build a lovely sense of camaraderie among the group. The day flew in which inspired me to climb more peaks! Would highly recommend KerryClimbing to anyone thinking of getting into the beautiful Kerry mountains! 😀

We went on a guied climb with these boys , excellent day , Gerry and Don were 2 of our Guides and were very professional.
They kept an eye on everyone and encouraged people who were struggling a bit.
This was my first time climbing Carrauntoohil and it was very well managed with plenty of breaks and a nice easy pace from the start.
These boys know what they are doing , I would highly recommend going on a climb with them , I know I will be going back again

We thank you again for your raving review and we look forward to welcoming you back here again in the not too distant future hopefully. All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing

We took the guided ascent of Carrauntoohil because the Irish weather can be so unreliable and mists can come down in a minute meaning you can lose your way easily unless you are a confident navigator. The day of our climb was hot and clear, so we were really lucky and could have done it ourselves, however our experience with Kerry Climbing was fantastic and I would recommend using their services all day long. Our guide was brilliant, showing us points of interest, finding a hidden mountain spring for us to refill bottles, encouraging us and ending the day by jumping into the lake in our clothes! It was a brilliant day and will be an enduring memory.

Hi Paula, Thank you for your wonderful review. You are right in what you say about the weather and it changes day to day. We did have such a great spell there and a few dips in the lake were very welcome. We wouldn't be getting in today!! Thank you for your compliments and I am delighted that you had such a fantastic expereince with kerry Climbing. Hopefully, we will see you back here in the mountains very soon. I booked with Kerry Climbing as I was traveling alone and very thankful now I did. The weather wasn't great, very heavy rain and without a guide there was no way I could have attempted this climb alone, even though I've some climbing experience. Our guide Piaras was unbelievable and took us up through the Devil's Ladder which had become a waterfall due to weather and this experience alone was worth booking the guide. Piaras was knowledgeable, funny, informative and most importantly made us feel safe. He took us down a less travelled route The Heavenly Gates where views were spectacular. I would highly recommend Kerry Climbing to anyone thinking of climbing Carrauntoohil either alone or in a group

Fantastic Richard and I am delighted that you enjoyed your day so much with Piaras and kerry Climbing. You are right, the mountains are so unpredictable and you just never know what's ahead on any given day. the assurance of a guide is certainly worth it! We look forward to seeing you for the Coomloughra...you'll love it!! All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing

A very tough day made so easy by the wonderful team at Kerry climbing. They got us up and down safely and with such a large crew that is not an easy task but we had regular stops which were sprinkled with local knowledge.
Rain and really strong winds made life difficult but help and encouragement got us through.

Huge congratulations on reaching Irelands highest peak, in particular when the weather is not on your side! A tough climb made even more difficult by the adverse weather, so well done. We are glad that you felt at ease with our team of guides and we hope to see you back in the near future. All the Best, Maureen and the team at Kerry Climbing

We wondered if we needed a guide to climbing Carrantuohil but did not regret our decision to go with Kerry Climbing. We are reasonably experienced hill walkers but Piaras massively enhanced our day by suggesting we go up the beautiful but challenging O’Sheas gully route. He is generous in sharing his knowledge of the geology, history and culture of the Reeeks. He also made us feel entirely confident and safe on our climb. It was a wonderful day. We highly recommend Kerry Climbing

Thanks for taking the time to leave such positive feedback, we are delighted to hear you enjoyed your day. Congratulations on ticking off Ireland's highest, it is such a great achievement. Like you mentioned, O' Shea's Gully really is a beautiful route, and with around the same level of fitness needed for The Devil's ladder all that you need is a head for heights, as there are some lovely sections of scrambling throughout the day. We hope to see you again for another adventure in the MacGillicuddy's Reeks. Thanks again, Orlaith, Piaras and all the team at KerryClimbing
