Guided Ascent of Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain: When you make an ascent with us you will not just be tagging along – we will share a wealth of historical, geological and natural history which these mountains have in abundance. We are very passionate about this area and it shows. Guests ages 16 and up can attend. It is worth mentioning before you proceed that any ascent of Ireland's highest mountain should only be undertaken if you feel you have the required level of fitness. You will be hiking over tough strenuous mountain terrain that does not have trails for at least 6 hours. The route is over 11 kmtrs long and within that there is 1000mtrs of ascent and decent! We have found that people have previously underestimated the climb so it is necessary to state this. Howling Ridge
I climbed Howling Ridge with Kerry Climbing. They were superb to deal with from start to finish. They showed me great flexibility during booking phase that I think most companies would not have done. As for the day itself, Piaras was a master at getting the whole group chatting and bonded. He was a powerhouse of enthusiasm, sharing his extensive knowledge of the mountains and their history. A real pro who ensured everyone was safe and having a good time at all times. The climb itself was exhilarating. Can't recommend them highly enough.

    Howling ridge
From beginning to end it was the most incredible trip. Not for the faint hearted or those inexperienced with scrambling. I felt 100 %safe with piaris. Howling ridge had been on my bucket list for a few years and I had been building up to it . It didn't dissapoint.

    Made the Summit!
Views from the top were spectacular and the history discussion along the way was very interesting. The Devil's Ladder was quite a challenge as it was covered in running water and the zig zags are quite narrow with a steep drop-off - this is not the experience for those afraid of heights. The trailhead (car park, facilities, tea shop) were as nice as I've seen on any hike. They were modern, clean, and well staffed.

    Mountain Skills 2 Course Review
I completed Mountain Skills 2 with Kerry climbing in late April with Piaras as our leader. I can’t rate this course highly enough and the same for Kerry climbing. Piaras goes into great detail and explains the information in a very concise way. You have full faith in what you are being shown and told. Highly recommended!!

Myself and my son had a great day with Pierce on the mountain proficiency and navigation course. It was very interactive in both the classroom and mountain settings. Pierce was great at involving my fourteen year old son which is not easy at the best of times

    Excellent Intro to Rock Climbing
I did the Intro Rock Climbing day with Kerry Climbing and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a little nervous as it was my first climbing experience in years and I *cough* old.. but the two instructors were excellent, very encouraging and cannot be thanked enough. There was lots to learn and do all day long in a beautiful part if the world. The equipment was excellent and very comprehensive. This is the second excursion I have been on with Kerry Climbing having hiked Carrauntoohil via the Devil’s Ladder and I reckon there are several more I want to get back to Kerry for soon. Recommended!

    Mountain Proficiency & Navigation Course
Very informative course. The day began at the Climbers Inn with an introduction to map reading. Piaras is very experienced, well organised and basically a great teacher. He wants you to learn. In the afternoon we went a short distance to a hill to practice some of our new skills. I really enjoyed the day and got a lot out of it.

    Coomloughra Horseshoe
We hiked the Coomloughra Horseshoe with Kerry Climbing and as always it was a super day of activity. Pre-event organisation is top notch. They even organised a decent amount of sunshine for us! The route is not for the fainthearted but it's who you want to be with if you have an adventurous bone in your body. The after event photographs arrived before the muscle soreness left. We're already watching the calendar for the next adventure with KC.

    Mountain Skills 1
I completed my Mountain Skills 1 with Piaras and found the weekend very enjoyable, interesting and educational. Piaras has so much knowledge to share with the group and is very funny too! I would definitely recommend to someone who is interested in learning skills in relation to mountaineering as the course is so simple but so worth knowing. I can’t wait to come back for MS2!

    Excellent!
Catherine & Piaras were a joy to deal with. From initial queries to booking a place on Mountain Proficiency training the experience was incredibly professional and detailed. The information you are given is precise and accurate. They have all the items you need on the day if you forgot anything. Piaras is very engaging and goes through aspects in a detailed manner. He will answer any question you may have. I am booked on mountain skills 2 later in the year with Kerry Climbing and I am very much looking forward to it.

    CURVE GULLY WINTER ASCENT
What to say other than Curve Gully in winter, what an incredible experience — another top top day on Corrán Tuathail with Piaras and the team at Kerry Climbing. Just to say that for anyone wishing to develop the skills required to be competent in the high mountains, this is the team and the set up for you. Every time I’ve been out, I’ve learned something new that could then be worked on and honed in my own time, which is exactly what I needed to help my progression. This one tops them all though. For the rate of development Piaras has helped with, I can only say, particularly with this latest course, I don’t think I’d be as far forward without him. Every time, it has been MORE than worth the long journey down from Tyrone — for both the time on the mountain and the skills and knowledge departed and gained. It’s the confidence the man gives you. Suffice to say, he knows his stuff and how to impart it onto the willing apprentice. Go raibh míle maith agat a Phiaras — a thousand thanks — and hopefully we’ll do the ridge on Brandon next time around.

    A brilliant day
Had the best day out with Piaras and Mike summiting Brandon down Dingle Bay. Their knowledge was fantastic and we always felt very safe as their first priority was the well being of the group. C'ant wait for another adventure next year! Ciara @ The Ross

I had a Brilliant day on Howling Ridge with Piaras. It poured rain for the day and we couldn’t see much at all as the majority of the climb was in the clouds but I felt very safe every second of the climb Despite the ridiculous exposure. We had mighty craic and I learned a huge amount.

Piaras’s knowledge of Carrauntoohil is second to none, and when our climb was finished after 6-7 hours on the mountain he got a call to go back up with the Kerry Mountain Rescue team to tend to a woman in need, and off he went with a smile on his face.

Before the day I had climbed the mountain a couple of times up the devils ladder - unprepared and without much knowledge, and I’d say that even if you’re able to do that, you’ll have a MUCH better day with a guide and you’ll learn a huge amount more. Especially if you’re travelling to Kerry from afar.

I’d highly recommend booking with Kerry Climbing, from booking online to the climb itself, everything was 10000% professional and I plan on climbing with them Again in the future.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and super well done on a mighty climb in not ideal conditions!! Though, I will add, the end of the day satisfaction makes it worth it regardless of the weather. Yes, Piaras really is amazing at his job and his knowledge of the whole area, his interest in history, geology and local folklore always adds to the enjoyment of the day. We look forward to welcoming you back here in the near future. Thanks again. All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing

We took the guided ascent of Carrauntoohil because the Irish weather can be so unreliable and mists can come down in a minute meaning you can lose your way easily unless you are a confident navigator. The day of our climb was hot and clear, so we were really lucky and could have done it ourselves, however our experience with Kerry Climbing was fantastic and I would recommend using their services all day long. Our guide was brilliant, showing us points of interest, finding a hidden mountain spring for us to refill bottles, encouraging us and ending the day by jumping into the lake in our clothes! It was a brilliant day and will be an enduring memory.

Hi Paula, Thank you for your wonderful review. You are right in what you say about the weather and it changes day to day. We did have such a great spell there and a few dips in the lake were very welcome. We wouldn't be getting in today!! Thank you for your compliments and I am delighted that you had such a fantastic expereince with kerry Climbing. Hopefully, we will see you back here in the mountains very soon. We had a super experience on this challenging hike last weekend- hips & calf muscles still recovering and we're planning out next outing with Kerry Climbing. From the outset responsiveness was very good, not to mention the really inviting social media footage. Everything on the day was so professional. Piaras (& Orla) guided us up the Devils Ladder at a good pace, so it was challenging but always felt very doable and safe. We got plentiful banter, information and education all day along with the wisdom of dodging the crowds and the better vantage points and also help with our selfies (always appreciated!). We're definitely coming back to have a go at the 3 peaks with Kerry Climbing.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I hope the muscles are continuing to improve :) :) Glad you find our social media engaging we love to share the stunning mountains we are so privileged to work in and the different conditions we find ourselves in daily too. It can be like a different world from one half of the day to the next! That is the beauty of the MacGillycuddys Reeks, no two days are the same. Piaras and Orlaith really enjoyed guiding you and passing on all the nuggets of information also, thanks again and we will be looking forward to hearing from you when that next plan is in place. Until then, take care. Catherine, Piaras & Orlaith.

An absolutely brilliant experience and one you’ll be recounting long after the day itself. A simple straightforward booking experience with plenty of information for both the first time or experienced walker, shared ever before you tie up your bootlaces, ensures you’ll be all set for an unforgettable day in the mountains. On the day itself, we were met at Cronin’s Yard by Piaras, our guide for the day at 9.30. Introductions made and a few guidelines on how to get the best for the day and we were off. Throughout the hike, plenty of stops for points of information and history of the whole area, really brings the day to life. Fantastic to make it to the summit and then dependant on the day/group/ energy levels there are a number of routes back down to base. My first (but won’t be my last) time to make the climb and I would have happily turned around at the end of the day and done it all over again. An excellent day out and experience made all the better in the company of the Kerry Climbing team who clearly love what they do and enjoy sharing that experience with those who join them for the day. My advice.. “don’t hesitate if you’re in the Killarney area and want an incredible day out” this has to be on your to-do list.

We had an amazing experience climbing Carrauntoohill. Our guide Pearse and his daughter Orla were brilliant, they both have great experience of the mountain range and knowledge of the history and geography of the surrounding area. On our hike the weather deteriorated after climbing the Devil's Ladder and there was heavy rain, wind and dense fog but our guides ensured everyone stayed safe. I would highly recommend doing to a guided hike with Kerry Climbing for anyone climbing Carrauntoohill.

On the 8th September myself and my friend joined Kerry Climbing on a group ascent up Carrauntoohil via the Devil's Ladder. Our guide's name was Mike, and he was fantastic! Full of interesting information, loads of fun, and he made us feel safe the whole way up. I would highly recommend doing a guided tour with these guys, especially if you are an inexperienced hiker - the route up is tricky if you don't know where you're going, and if it's cloudy you will get lost very easily. There are demanding parts of the climb where you use your hands to climb up slippy rocks, and I personally felt comfort in knowing that we had an experienced guide with us if an accident did happen (fortunately our whole group made it up and back with no casualties!). All in all it was an amazing day, incredibly rewarding, and I already plan on going back to do another guided tour with them, but on a more challenging route next time!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review of your experience with Kerry Climbing recently, reviews are so important for prospective clients who are looking to take a day in the mountains with us, it is always good to hear feedback from people who have 'experienced the adventure' first hand. We also love to hear how your day went and the highlights for you. Yes, I always think it is more enjoyable, knowing that you have a guide, who is helping you find your way, and keeping an eye on you at all times, even if from a distance. This puts our guests at ease, so that you can just concentrate on climbing and enjoying the day! Thanks again and we look forward to that next climb!! We had Mikey from Kerry Climbing as our guide and he was amazing. Really calm in challenging conditions. The elements threw everything at us - gusts, rain, hail and snow. Mikey stayed calm throughout and kept us going - particularly on the last piece of the ascent when we were all struggling.
I’d highly recommend Kerry Climbing

The group met at 10am to undertake the Brother O'Sheas Gully route up to the top of Carrauntoohil. There were five in the group plus Piaras, our guide for the day.
The pace was nice and steady and every so often we would stop to allow a wee rest and for Piaras to impart interesting facets of the area.

Taking this route broke the ascent into very reasonable bite-sized chunks as well as providing spectacular views. On our climb the weather was very changeable and anyone thinking about doing this really should get a guide and I have no hesitation in recommending Kerry Climbing. It's also essential to appreciate this is a mountain with steep slopes, so leave the trainers, flipflops at home and come properly prepared.

Piaras will support and encourage and share his intimate knowledge and love of the mountains, but each group member must respect the mountains too. The way it should be.

Thank you very much for you review of your recent day out with Piaras and Kerry Climbing. You got it in one with your very in-depth review, Piaras does truly love the mountains here and wants them to left as they are for all to enjoy for many years and future generations. We are all serious advocates of the 'Leave no Trace' campaign. I can see that you also really appreciate the efforts that all our guides go to to ensure that everyone we bring up the mountains understands the importance of the magnificent area we live in and the history and geology of the area. Thank you very much for your recommendation and we look forward to seeing you back here in the near future for another adventure with Kerry Climbing. We climbed Howling Ridge with Kerry Climbing on 7th September.

The route is phenomenal with some tricky climbing and some serious exposure. We had awkward weather co situ is but still enjoyed the day massively.

I have climbed with guides before but have never had a better experience than the one I had with Piaras. He’s such a nice guy with a laid back attitude and is a great laugh across the day. At the same time he’s a very impressive operator, he knows the route inside out and as clients we felt properly safe at all times. I would climb again with Piaras in a heartbeat and have no qualms recommending Kerry climbing to anybody. Indeed I’ll be on the look out for good winter conditions in the coming months to book another day.

If you have some rock climbing experience and are looking to try a proper mountaineering route, give Kerry climbing a call and you won’t regret it!

Thank you so much and congratulations, Howling Ridge is not to be sneezed at!!! You are completely on the button, when it comes to Piaras, and I will make sure to pass on your comments to him. He is so experienced and know the Reeks inside and out! Along with the rest of our guides, they make the day with their stories and snippets of information that is not the same as reading it in a book...in fact, it's not in a book! I am delighted you had such a great day with Kerry Climbing and with Piaras and we look forward to seeing you back for your next adventure. All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing
