- jelenajI9122KL0 contributionsLoved it!I did the 1-hour Biodiversity Cruise with my daughter, we both enjoyed it very much. Our guide/skipper was brilliant and his enthusiasm for all the wildlife along the canal was just catching. It's a unique, relaxing and above all educative experience, which will make you appreciate every creature or a plant just a little bit more, no matter how tiny they might be!Written 4 July 2024

- 745caraghc0 contributionsA Biodiversity Cruise along the canal at SallinsThis was my second time to go on the barge cruise and it certainly won’t be my last. The stretch of canal at Sallins is stunningly beautiful, and when you add in Chris’s remarkable knowledge of the biodiversity in the region and his obvious enthusiasm for the subject it makes for a wonderful hour away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Dragonflies, moths, butterflies, fish and even a buzzard. Chris pointed out a wild orchid just coming into bloom on the canal bank, a new and exciting experience for most of us. Highly recommended.Written 20 June 2024
- 964PaulM0 contributionsA unique, relaxing and enjoyable experienceWhat a lovely way to spend an evening. We booked the barge for a private group. It was great to have it to ourselves. The skipper was lovely and friendly and gave us a history lesson as we made our way down the canal. He was happy to answer our many questions! There’s a bar on board with a nice selection of drinks that I’m sure has something for everyone. The 90 minutes went by so quickly and we were back in Sallins before we knew it. It was a lovely relaxing experience and I’d highly recommend it.Written 3 June 2024
- 552maryq0 contributionsCelebrations on the BargeI booked the barge trip for my partners 50th birthday, He was never on a barge before but he had the best time. Chris that was in charge of the barge let my partner steer it and some other members of the family. Chris was a book of knowledge and a wicked sense of humor. Monika was lovely too and served the drinks on board. We are going to book again in the summer as it was a great experience. Thanks so much Chris and Monica.Written 29 April 2024

Very happy to recommend this trip on the barge from Sallins to Digby Lock.
It’s a wonderful setting, a whole different way to see the countryside & birdlife, going at the relaxed pace of the barge.
Add in the experience of heading through the lock, both rising up & down + crossing the Liffey on the beautiful Leinster Acquaduct
The barge was well kept & very well organized. Stove made the inside as cosy as could be.
My grandsons’ favourite spot was at the front.
We bought our food to have with the tea & coffee available.
But, best of all was our skipper Chris.
We decided it was his genuine enthusiasm, range of information & willingness to discuss all our questions which made our morning such a success.
A big thanks from 7 very happy people 🤗

Chris was an excellent guide with extensive historical information. His friendly waves to canalside walkers was extended to familiar dogs & wildlife (herons, water hens & ducks). He is very ecologically sensitive & knowledgeable information about that wildlife & canal plants was illuminating! The barge is gorgeous and is kitted out with refreshments. Primarily the trip was a beautiful peaceful reflective 2.5 hours.

We spent a beautiful morning on the canal, our trip was 2.5 hours, so relaxing and enjoyable, Chris was our skipper who was so friendly knowledgeable about the history of the canal and the biodiversity along the way....my 9 year old and her friend enjoyed it all, we will definitely return,
Fabulous friendly staff, apologies I can not remember the name of the chap who looked after us so well on board too.
Also Ger in the bike rental shop, looked after us, where we enjoyed a lovely coffee on our return,
Looking forward to our next trip.

We took a return barge trip from Sallins, County Kildare. Chris was the man in charge and ensured we had a great trip. It was a lovely trip and Chris was a great guide, with information on the history, wildlife and in particular the bird life on the canal. I saw kingfishers and hawks which was a real thrill. We went through a lock which was a great thrill, especially for the children, who hadn't experienced it before. We would highly recommend a trip with Bargetrip.ie.

Lovely chilled 1 hour cruise along the grand canal. Friendly crew. Group of 7 and we had it to ourselves! Good selection of drinks and local draught beer available on board. We brought our own snacks with us. If I went again I’d choose a longer tour as the one hour felt a little bit short. We were lucky with the weather! You can be inside the boat if it’s raining though 🙂

What an amazing way to pass a morning. The 2.5 hour trip ambled along with Chris, the captain/guide/raconteur, providing a running commentary on the construction of the canal and its various oddities, the aquaduct, the wildlife, the boats moored along the edge, their owners and life in general. Very enjoyable

What a brilliant way to spend some time just relaxing. The barge is so well kept and safe. Thanks to Chris (Skipper) who was so inviting and so informative regarding the local wildlife and fauna. It was fascinating. Watching how the lock worked was so interesting. We will be back, possibly doing a Christmas trip when the barge is lit up. Can’t wait

Myself and my Partner had the pleasure of taking this barge trip for his birthday. To say the skipper was a joy to listen to was an understatement as we meandered down the Canal listening to his stories and it's history. He was informative and answered any questions asked of him. Plenty of wildlife to see. We would highly recommend this gem.
