Oakfield Park is a great place to visit with a young family. There's lot to do & see. The train ride was a hit with the kids. The playground kept them occupied for ages, along with the nature dome/tent with its colouring pages and pencils. It's a very tasteful setting with popular music playing in the background and a comfortable family cafe which includes all the kid's favourites. There's lots of picnic tables beside the playground if you want to eat outside. There's plenty of cool spots to explore too - funky sculptures, a castle tower, maze, and a hobbit looking fairy tree. Minor quibbles - Prices increased in Summer 2022 yet the website hasn't bn updated. Also the upper gardens are only open to the public at weekends at an additional fee (not sure this is advertised in advance). We weren't told about the very good App when paying, which would've been useful seeing that you're not given a map/pamphlet. Also a second train ride option would've bn nice for the kids (even at a fee). Though all in all definitely worth the visit.

I have a seasonal pass for Oakfield Park. It is an amazing park to visit. It is very safe, clean and friendly place for families or anyone to visit. Very peaceful and enjoyable day out. The seasonal ticket is great value for money if you like to walk or get the kids out walking and playing outdoors. The upper garden is open at the weekend via guided tour at 2pm or 4 pm and it is a lovely experience to see the house and gardens. They also have picnic tables to eat outside or you can visit the restaurant and eat indoors or outdoors. The park is also pet friendly.

Our first visit to Oakfield and were very impressed. There are beautiful walks and something interesting around every corner. Too many to list. The fairy tree and giant are great fun but we also loved the wood carvings around the park. We went as a couple but there were lots of families with kids all having a great time without it feeling like you can’t enjoy it because it’s crowded with kids. The highlight was the maze which we loved and spent ages trying to figure out.
Would definitely recommend if you want a nice walk in an interesting beautiful garden.

Kids enjoyed the place but service very slow. Restaurant said it would be an hour to serve food & then told they ran out of hot food. One girl in an ice cream van serving very slowly, she needed someone else to help with the queue.

The maddest of hatters, crazy croquet, a maze full of disorientated, mildly embarrassed adults, and spectacular , sweeping grounds that tiny feet couldn't traverse viewed in comfort from our own railway carriage- our intergenerational party of five ranged in age from almost 80 to 16 months and we all had a great time. A special mention for the exuberant, unfailingly courteous and helpful young staff whose attention to detail and personal touch went far beyond what we have come to expect from customer service and filled the afternoon with fun- an old fashioned word but exactly what Oakfield's Easter Express delivers. From the triumphant ringing of the bell at the heart of the Maze. to the imaginative playpark fashioned from natural materials, the spotless toiler facilities and restaurant with its quick service and unexpected;y tasty food. there was something to enjoy round every corner. The Santa Express is already being advertised but there's no need. We will be back, before then. Providing the Wishing Tree delivers its promise!

Just back from our 1st visit to Oakfield Park with my wife, 3 year old and 3 month old. From the greeting at the gates right through to the table service in the restaurant the customer service was excellent.

I saw on trip advisor people mentioned the upper park was closed, but you are offered the tour of the upper park at the gatehouse as you drive in. We didn't take the tour, but tbh we still spent 4.5 hours in the lower park and i feel we hardly scratched the surface.

Sure the food in the restaurant wasn't fast food prices, but the quality of the food matched the price. My burger was very tasty.

My son had a ball and had lots of 1st experiences e.g going on a train, seeing a duck, seeing a swan in real life etc, no issues sitting down in the shade to feed our newborn, staff checking if we needed anything in the restaraunt and cleaning promptly around us even though it was pretty busy and adhering to covid measures.

Thanks for a great day!

Thank you so much for the lovely and detailed review. Over the years over 90% of visitors stayed in the lower gardens where the railway, Difflin Lake, restaurant and features all reside. You’re correct in that it does take a few visits even to see half of the park but at least the train does allow you to spot things as you travel! It’s great that your son had so many new experiences. We’re delighted that you enjoyed your meal and the best burger! We really appreciate your kind words on the attentiveness of Buffers staff. Thank you again so much, for taking the time and hope to see you again soon.

I have returned from a very brief visit at oak field park today. We are from Donegal Town and would visit the park numerous times every year and it has never been as busy! The car park was full and we were advised that there was an overflow carpark on the other side of the main road in a field but we were able to find a space. We are a family of 3 adults and 2 kids. We queued for 20 minutes at the restaurant only to be told the kitchen had just closed for the next 30 to 40 minutes. The crowds of people were outrageous. There was absolutely no covid restrictions in place. The queues for the train was extremely long. We were there no longer than 30 minutes and had to leave because we felt so uncomfortable. We let the girl at the ticket office know and she was apologetic and gave us a family pass to come back by the end of the season, which is over in 2 weeks! She said herself that she has never seen it so busy as this year. Very very disappointed. I know the park is large but surely the 200 people outdoor rule

Hi Laura We absolutely respect your views on this but have to say that we are totally in disagreement and find the feedback both inaccurate and potentially damaging to one of the few attractions in the county that can provide more than adequate social distance. Even on a very busy day like the one when you visited, the spread of people is around 5 per acre. At hotspots like the restaurant, sometimes we have to stop hot food to disperse queues. For that we are very sorry, but we will always offer drinks and pre-prepared food as an option. It takes around 4 hours to get around the park here. The queues come and go but there is so much more to see on foot. It is normal to wait up to 20 minutes for the train , which is not extraordinary as that is as often as it can go with the sanitation between each run and newly compartmentalised carriages. In fact, a 20 minute queue is not unusual anywhere in Donegal at the moment given how busy we are as a county. We are very pleased that a staff member gave you a Family Pass to return again in the future as a goodwill gesture. Our season goes on until the end of September, not for another two weeks as you stated. Overall we really feel this one star review is both unusual and unfair. Like every business, we are doing our bit to keep going, provide employment and make people as happy as ever. Our recent reviews aside from this one are testament to that. Hopefully when you next visit you will be able to observe our efforts, make us of all the space afforded to you here, and possibly you might consider editing your review. We really hope you enjoy your day here.

Overall a great experience from start to finish. The tour of the upper garden was outstanding and the tour guide Bronwyn made it an even better experience leaving no stone unturned throughout and was very attentive. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend checking this place out, it's a real hidden gem worth a visit!

After coming to the park for many years we found the upper gardens now closed, for me this was the best part. Having already coughed up €40 I would need to pay and extra €7 for a tour, something I would have had before and viewed in my own time to enjoy and not by guided tour which would bore young kids who don't understand why we can't rest and take a break. I feel this is a total cash in on the staycation.

The upper gardens are not closed - they are available to visit by guided tour for €2 each for reasons beyond our control. That’s €2! I’m not sure how this can be perceived as “cashing in” when it costs more money than comes in. We have had fantastic feedback from this addition. It’s true that nobody complains when prices remain static for the past 4 years despite the fact that the park is constantly being developed and added to. The offering now is so much greater than when prices were the same four years ago. Did you actually do a tour to find out that breaks or tests aren’t allowed? I’m sure the guide would allow breaks if required on a tour that lasts over an hour.

The grounds are in perfect condition and very nicely laid out. There was a bit of a queue for the train ride, but they had them running more frequently so the wait was not too long. There is a nice cafe onsite too with hot dishes for lunch. Plenty of outdoor seating too. Great day out for the family
