We had to cancel our South Tahoe rental for Labor Day weekend 2021 on very short notice due to wildfires, smoke, and evacuations. The upcoming weekend was looking bleak. In a mad scramble to find a smokeless alternative destination, we opted for Monterey. We found this cool 17 Mile Drive eBike tour and thought we'd give it a shot even though it was so last minute. I can't say enough how great the experience was from the start to finish. Joaquin was able to accommodate our group despite us attempting to book only 3 days before a busy holiday weekend. With a little shuffling and a couple of phone calls, he was able to get us booked on a Saturday morning tour. All the staff Saturday morning were very friendly, helpful, and patient with our group and got us situated right away. Victor our tour guide was the best, so much great information and took us to all the best spots along our 17 Mile Drive tour route. Added bonus, I don't think it's mentioned on their website, but they're PET FRIENDLY. Bring your fur babies along for the ride! They have pet trailers and rack mount pet carriers for smaller dogs (or cats) for a small additional fee.

*One thing I don't recommend, and this is nothing negative reflected on the Big Sur Adventures staff, I recommend against large groups like us, 17 total (adults & kids) w/ dogs. With our large group and it being a busy weekend, there was a lot traffic (autos and bikes) along the route. Our group had gotten split up a few times while riding because of busy intersections, slower cyclists, etc. At one point a small portion of our group didn't know which way the rest of the group turned at an intersection, if it wasn't for Find My iPhone, we wouldn't have been able to locate them. Logistically it's tough to manage a group this large. If you do plan to do a large group tour make sure to setup Location Sharing on your phones first or maybe just plan the tour on a weekday rather than a weekend.

This was an excellent activity! Not one complaint. If you can financially ( and it isn’t much more expensive than other biking rental options in Monterey) please go on the e-bike tours and NEVER rent the regular bikes and especially not the surrey bikes, unless you are a professional biker and in great shape. The surrey bikes are just hard because one or 2 people end up pedaling the 400lb bike and the hundreds of pounds of people in it and after about 15 minutes you realize this is not going to be a fun relaxing sight see along the beach.

Check in was organized and easy. The bikes are well maintained and incredible. Because you provide heights and weights when you register, there is very little adjusting and chaos at check-in. My husband and I did the 17 mile tour with our 2, over 18 y/o kids. My daughter has RA and I was concerned about her joints, but it absolutely fine. We had a super fun, incredible family time and everyone at the end said they would definitely do it again. The ebike make it super easy or you can dial the assist down and get more of a workout. There is no pressure to “keep up” but it is easy to do, no matter your degree of fitness. Zane was our guide and I HIGHLY recommend him, although probably all of the guides are good. There are lots of stops to take pics. The ride ended up being 21 miles, but we could have easily kept going for another 15 miles, other than your butt starting to hurt :)
I 100% recommend this activity, esp for families with older children or adult groups. Monterey is beautiful with perfect weather for bike riding and this is a great way to see the coast line.

Wow! Just amazing! Seriously, book it now, you won’t regret it.

We lucked into like the warmest and sunniest June day ever. Zane was an amazing tour guide and had all kinds of fun facts and stories for us. He also very easily managed our large group of kids, parents and grandparents, most completely unfamiliar with e-bikes. Our boys loved taking turns riding backwards on the orange rad wagon, and holding onto the bike handles on the white rad wagon. The grandparents enjoyed the blue bike that had the backrest (can’t remember the name of that one). I would recommend bringing a jacket and wearing pants because in general it is very cold on the coast, especially when speeding along on the bike. We didn’t need ours though.

We saw all kinds of amazing sea life, including otters and harbor seals. We also saw lots of deer, including babies, keep your eyes peeled!

Tip- don’t forget to bring your wallet on the tour. I left mine in the car and we stopped at the shops at Pebble Beach for a few and I was wishing I hadn’t left my wallet behind. 🤦‍♀️

We had a great time on this bike tour as a family of five including three teenagers (aged 18, 15 & 13). The electric bikes are a must and so much fun, taking the stress and hardwork out of cycling. Our guide was ace stopping at all the important points and giving us lots of details about the area. This was also helpful as you didn’t need to plan where to go and could just follow along and enjoy the views. My major piece of advice is wrap up warm! They warn you when booking but given the weather forecast looked okay we all wore shorts and sweatshirts/hoodies. Long trousers would have been more suitable as the wind on the coast can be chilly when you are getting up speed on your bike. It didn’t deter from the fun as we are hardy Brits but I was kicking myself I didn’t put my leggings on. Would definitely recommend.

This was a great outdoor adventure along the coast, I t was nice to get a little experience with an e-bike too. The scenery was awesome. It was a tad hurried IMO and be sure to dress in layers for the foggy (but beautiful) coast.

I think the guide got creative with the script (kelp is an algae not a flowering plant so it cannot have inflated stamens and pistils--and cormorants diving 600 feet? I think that would have shown up in Scientific American) but I didn't sign up for a science class and the ride was super enjoyable. Just grin and enjoy. Would do it again.

Absolute best bikes and service in the area!! My daughter (adult) and I rode 30 miles Sunday, (Cannery Row to Carmel and back, and we had plenty of battery left). You don’t need to do the tour, very easy to ride the trails and paths on your own, just head toward 17 mile drive (on the path). The electric bikes are so easy to ride and have so much power you barley have to peddle (even up steep hills) and we were averaging 13-15 miles per hour, truly effortlessly. This is the ONLY way to ride around the Monterey area, it make it soooo easy and comfortable, if you can ride a bike you will love the electric bikes at Big Sur Adventures… and their service is excellent, everyone working there was very helpful and fun, I highly recommend them.

This place was cool and the staff was awesome. We had so much fun riding their electric bikes and touring the 17 Mile Drive. I'm sorry, I forgot our tour guides name, but he was specular !! He constantly looked back keeping track of all of us riders. If we got too far apart, he would stop and wait for the group to come together.
Our tour guide made us aware before riding that there was a down power line on the tour, so it'll be a little different than normal due to the detours. However, during the stops on the tour he would ask everyone if we would like to sneak in and see how far we could go before we had to change directions. Nobody on our tour was in a hurry and we loved that he offered this option, so we snuck in and saw some beautiful views and saw some gorgeous mansions.

Again, I forgot our tour guides name, and I feel so bad, cuz he truly was a GREAT guide !! On the few stops we made, he would tell us stories about the sea life, the Cypress trees and just history in general of the area. Our tour guide never mentioned John Denver, so I asked about Mr.Denver. Boy, I got so much more than I was expecting. Our guide knew so much and told us things things I did not know about John and his plane. I definitely learned a lot and I'm so glad I asked about John Denver.

The only thing negative about this fantastic bike tour is the stop at Pebble Beach. It's way TOO SHORT. It's only a 20 minute stop and that barely gives you time to see Pebble Beach and go to the bathroom.

The bikes were great. This is definitely not a safe tour. You are riding ON the street NEXT to cars! There were several times cars would get dangerously close to us which made it very hard to relax and enjoy the ride. At one stop sign a car almost ran into us. Its not like this through the entire ride but for more then half you are riding in traffic amongst cars who are looking at the scenery as well. Not safe! Also our guide hardly looked back at all to make sure all were safe. At one point my helmet fell off in the beginning of the ride the entire tour just kept riding to where we couldn't see them. Thankfully they were at a stop at least 2 miles ahead and we caught up. If we would have made a wrong turn we would have lost them. Guide was nice but truly in his own world not paying attention to the safety of his riders. He blew through stop signs like they werent there. Each stop was super quick and as soon as he got on his bike to leave which was extremely quick he was gone never looking back! Never waited to for everyone to get on their bikes he just left as if he was on his on tour. There should be a guide in the front and back especially with this guy but there isnt. Beautiful scenery but definitely hard to enjoy when your trying to keep up and hurry at each stop and avoiding being hit by a car. Would not recommend for families as the people with children tandem were really struggling. They dont give you time to practice riding so if you have never ridden a ebike you truly better be a fast learner!

It was a great experience, beautiful scenery and amazing views!
Zane was patient and knowledgeable throughout the whole ride.
Super relaxed and accommodating to everyone, made sure we were all comfortable and prepared as possible for the ride.
Didn’t focus on time or urgency, made sure we all enjoyed the ride!
Also made sure all riders for the group were present and gave enough time for those running a little late.
Will do this again and will recommend to everyone!!

If you are looking for an easy fun bike tour of 17 mile drive and with various parts of Monterey, Big Sur Adventures is the place to go. My wife and I (60's) just did the electric bike tour yesterday and it was a blast. The team at Big Adventure is very helpful and friendly. They want to make sure you feel safe on the bike, explain the functions of use and mainly, enjoying the ride. Our guide was, Victor, who was not only friendly and professional, he truly loves want he does. During the stops he will share his vast knowledge of each site. Victor has a great ability to connect with people at any age and make sure everyone it having a great time. The tour itself is about 3 1/2 hours with stops for pictures along the way. Were stopped at a market /Gift store in Pebble beach for a 15 - 20 minute break. Good place for a sandwich. The ride itself is fairly easy. Even if you haven't ridden a bike in while, the few hills you encounter aren't that tough. My only suggestion would be to pay the extra for the electric bike rental. It makes the ride that much more enjoyable.
