This was meant to be an English speaking tour ... the translator did her best but the Spanish speaking guide was a bully and intimidated everyone. She was not helpful ... did not point out toilets or that it was a requirement to pay for some facilities... she completely ignored the English speaking guests....and insulted them by calling them children .... we were required to pay for 350 per person for Tilcara when our paperwork states the entrance fee is included. Where did this money go ? She talked non stop and and was overwhelming ... very disappointing trip .... not to mention the condition of the bus .... it was so uncomfortable, swayed and bounced heavily all over the road ...First driver was very poor ... 2nd driver was much better but the bus was very poor... air conditioning was freezing with guests very cold ... mentioned to guide but she did not care. She could speak English but preferred not to understand ... as I said Bus trip from hell... BEWARE

Our guide, Jeremy, was very personable and made a point of explaining everything to us in English. The scenery is spectacular, and we had interesting stops along the way, with time to do things on our own.
One word of caution: Bring water with you. We were told when we booked that there was no need because there would be water on the bus. There was only one big bottle for refills for the whole bus of 20-some people. So be prepared.

We took this trip with the guide Guillermo, who gave us an infinite amount of information about the villages we were visiting and the nature around us.
We stopped in many interesting places along the way, to take pictures or to get in touch with natives selling souvenirs.
Anyway, not all of the places were worthy visiting ( for example the Pukarà of Tilcara). At the same time, the tour does not include the astonishing mountain Hornocal, which I really advice to visit.
After this tour, we decided not to go back to Salta and to spend the night in Purmamarca, and Nordic Travel was so kind to pick us up in Purmamarca and continue the tour to the Salinas Grandes the day after (in this way we avoided approximately 8 hours in the bus)

Truth be told, I am not a person who enjoys organized tours. So if you ARE, ignore my review. Here’s the deal for anyone else who doesn’t want to spend 12 hours mostly in a vehicle, eating a mediocre lunch, and being shown at every stop Andean themed gifts probably made in Bolivia.
If you’re in Salta, definitely go to Purmamarca to check out the Hill of 7 Colors (Cerro de los 7 Colores). On your way back, check out Jujuy. These are wonderful places. Worth the trip.
Unless you really want to fill your day, skip the trip north to Humahuaca. There are lovely painted hills along the way, but you would have already seen the best. Humahuaca has a nice monument to indigenous people (props for that because they still are not fully respected). There is a small central plaza where one can buy Andean themed gifts (although you’re not in the Andes). Most tours have you eat at the bus station which serves mediocre food (break away to a smaller nearby restaurant...maybe similar food but better atmosphere). It didn’t help that the day I visited there were public sewage issues along the street from the bus station to the main square. Not so delightful walk back to the bus.
Some may enjoy other planned stops, which all seem rather standard regardless of the tour organizer and well described by Tripadvisor. But nothing compares to what you could have done had you ventured no farther north than Purmamarca. Use your spare time to enjoy Salta. Or take a nap so that you can stay up late at one of many exciting peñas. Disfrute Salta!

Luis was an outstanding guide who took us (my spouse and myself) on 3 memorable full-day tours to these locations. He not only showed us the key sites, but in addition gave us a fist class tour d´horizon of the region, of the main cultural sites. of the region´s history, as well as its economic base. His profound knowledge of all these aspects is a real asset, which we greatly benefitted from. Not to forget his fine sense of humour which made our tours not only highly interesting but also most pleasant. A pleasure to recommend Luis and Kalanchi

It was a reasonably long tour. We started at the tour office at 6.30am and returned to Salta at 8.30pm. We were the only English speaking customers (the rest speaking Spanish), but Martin our tour guide positioned ourselves at the front next to where he sat so that he could talk directly to us, whilst he used a microphone to give the equivalent information in Spanish to the rest of the bus. His English was very good and he gave lots of useful information.
The trip took a while to get going, but once out of Jujuy the scenery became much more interesting as we climbed in altitude and into the more arid areas.
Purmamarca was a lovely town backed by the multi coloured mountain behind. We only spent 45 minutes here and wished it had been longer. (In fact the tour could spend longer here and reduce time at some later stops)
Tilcara is home to a museum with Inca ruins. This cost an additional 300 pesos per person (for non nationals) and we did not go in (having seen a number of other Inca and pre Inca sights elsewhere), so Martin directed us on a short local walk which gave some nice views.
We then stopped at a local pottery, and (for us) we would have preferred to have cut the time down here (from 45 minutes to 15 minutes ... or even missed it out completely) and spent the extra time at Purmamarca - it's mostly just a shop.
We then drove onto Humahuaca where we stopped for 2 hours and had lunch and a wander. We stopped outside a large and busy tourist restaurant that had been 'pre-booked', but we were free to go elsewhere - which we did - to a nice quiet restaurant. We found Humahuaca to be quaint but rather touristy, and we would rather have spent a little less time here (and more at Purmamarca).
We then returned to Jujuy and Salta with a couple of short stops on the way.
We enjoyed the tour and we thought our guide (Martin) and our driver (Antonio) were very good. The bus was mid-sized with bigger windows and more comfortable seating than a minibuse - we suggest that you check what the transport is before you go.

We did a 2-day combo with Nordic Tours with this tour as our second (and much preferred - to Cafayate). We were the only non-Spanish speakers on the bus, however the guide relayed all the information to us in English, and he spoke it well. All the sites we visited were awesome, and unlike anywhere we’d been on our travels so far! It was a shame we could only have had 45mins in Purmamarca as this was probably the nicest place. 2hrs at Humahuaca was more than enough, though we found a great place here for lunch. It’s was a long day, with lots of driving as it takes almost 3hrs to get to the first place; pickup at 7am and drop off at 9pm (it was meant to be 7pm). If you’ve only got time for 1 day tour from Salta, make sure it’s to these places.

My first contacts with Nordic Travel were via email and they replied it all with politeness and kindness.
When in Salta, the staff at the agency seemed to be also very kind.
The tour to Quebrada de Humahuaca started with no delay and our guide - extremely solicitous - seemed to know about everything around that place. He explained every detail about the geological formation as well as the local culture and customs.
No regrets all at to hire them!

Hola Silvia.

Saludos, JAT.

Dose this trip including the 14 color hill?
PaulandJenn
Adelaide, Australia72 contributions
Yes, the tour does include the 14 colour hill.
In our opinion we could have (and should have) stayed longer in Purmamarca (where the coloured mountains are), but they are definately worth seeing. If you have time we suggest that you stayvin Purmamarca overnight.
Actually, you also see some other areas of beautiful coloured mountains on the trip, and they are all truely fantastic.
