About
Discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley – picturesque vineyards, breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality and fine wines. Experience a unique and leisurely journey through the rolling vineyards of South African wine country on the Franschhoek Wine Tram. You will travel in an open-side tram and open-air tram-bus stopping in at some of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates. Enjoy two wine tastings, and feel free to purchase any other food and beverages you like. Your storytelling guide will also take you on a tour through Franschhoek village, sharing with you the fascinating history of the French Huguenots. You then visit Babylonstoren, a historic Cape Dutch farm dating back to 1692, boasting one of the best preserved farmyards in the Cape. Babylonstoren showcases vast, incredible gardens of great botanical diversity, as well as fruit and vegetable gardens, an intriguing labyrinth, and more.

What to expect
  • Get picked up at your hotel or other accommodation in central Cape Town and transferred to the scenic Franschhoek Valley in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Climb into the Franschhoek Wine Tram to ride through this beautiful countryside, with picturesque vineyards and historic wine estates. The tram operates on a loop, with frequent stops at wineries so you can hop off at any time to go on a wine cellar tour, enjoy a wine tasting, take a walk through a vineyard, or get a bite to eat for lunch (own expense). When you're ready to continue your tour, just hop back on the next tram. During your wine experience, learn about the history of the French Huguenots who settled this area more than three centuries ago. Hear about how they established vineyards and wineries here based on their knowledge of French wine-making. Today, the wines of the Franschhoek Valley are unique representations of South Africa's viticulture traditions. Sample robust reds and sparkling whites. Visit large wine estates and small wineries. Eat in one of the many well-known restaurants in the area. How you spend your time is up to you. At the conclusion of your day, you are returned to Cape Town. Please note: Two wine tastings are included in this package. All other food and drinks are at your own expense.

Our curated wine experience was incredible. Our tour guide Roger ensured we learnt at each farm, tasted the best wines at each farm and walked away feeling amazing. It was the best experience, and Roger was a wonderful host. We are very glad to have had Roger as our guide. He ensured we received the best wines at each farm, and assisted us with choosing our favorites from each farm to purchase. Thank you Roger for the most fantastic day, despite the rain.

Wine Tasting
Very pleasant. Would have liked to be on the tram for a longer period as it is called a Wine Tram tour and you end up being on it for only two of the 10 farms.

What a wonderful way to spend a day
Oct 2019
This was a very enjoyable experience. We visited five vineyards, tasting wine at each one and enjoying a very good meal at lunchtime. All of those we visited were very hospitable and the whole day was well organised. It was fun to see a group celebrating a fortieth birthday having a very merry day!! Good value for money and an experience not to be missed by wine drinkers when visiting this area.

Beautiful!!
Feb 2018
Since I am not a wine-drinker, I went on the Winetram simple for the experience. And what an experience!!!! I LOVED every minute of it!! The HOHO experience is easy once you get the hang of it. The tram literally appears at your stop every hour. Take a tip and do some research on the particular farms you want to visit before you leave, This makes choosing easier.

The entire day was phenomenal though....much more than just wines!

Fabulous day out
Feb 2018 • Friends
As a recent newcomer to travelling to Cape Town I've been on quite a few wine tours now and this was definitely one of the best. On our day we got as far as Allee Bleue then stopped for three hours. The lovely 'Thirsty Kirsty' was our host, it was a lovely vineyard and didn't come across as commercial as some others that we've visited. Another great location but very relaxed, fabulous wines and we were very well looked after. The trams are a novel way of getting around and the drivers were a lot of fun. Very highly recommended.

Absolutely an Amazing out of this world experience!
Mar 2018 • Friends
We missed our tram, luckily we met the General Manager who assisted us together with his amazing staff to take us to the tram. Even though we only visited 3 wine farms, it was still out of the world experience! First class wine estates with wine pairing either with cheese, chocolate or nougat etc. Highly recommended trip to place on your on bucket list!

Best wine tour in Western Cape
Sep 2017 • Friends
The Wine Tram is just perfect. Very nice guides and also alot of great estates to visit. We did the yellow line, which i can hishly recomend. You should not miss out the lunch at Dieu Donne! I also did a wine tour in Stellenbosch, but the wine tram is much better.
