    Covering 29000 hectares. Tortuguero is one of the most important nesting sites of Chelonia Midas, the green sea turtle. Tortuguero’s forests and waterways are home for many endangered mammals such as sloths, monkeys, agoutis, coatimundis and manatees. There are also abundant birds, such as toucans, trogons, egrets, herons and aninghas, as well as crocodiles, turtles and countless colorful butterflies, including the blue morpho. You will enjoy a hearty typical buffet lunch to please the hungriest of appetites. After lunch you will take a walk through the Tortuguero Village, where you will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the town and its inhabitants.

What to Expect
Your tour to Tortuguero National Park starts with early morning pickup from your San Jose hotel. Drive through the mountainous and waterfall-studded passes of Braulio Carrillo National Park, breaking up the drive with breakfast at a popular roadside restaurant (included). Then, board a boat and set sail for one hour to reach Tortuguero National Park, which is inaccessible by road; keep watch for birds and other wildlife along the way. Upon arrival at the park, board another boat for a 3-hour ride tour through a network of creeks and lagoons as your guide tells you about the area’s ecosystem and helps you spot wildlife. Break for lunch at Evergreen Lodge (included) and then begin the return trip to your San Jose hotel.

I recommend staying for 2 nights to see the best this place has to offer, but due to time I had to do the one day tour - 10 hours transportation for 2 hours in Tortuguero and a short walk on the beach in the Park. The highlight was seeing sloths in two locations on the drive

We went beginning November which is low season and had a wonderful time but we were amazed at how may lodges and hotels there are in and around the national park. In high season it must be overcrowded....so may boats with big motors behind it racing through the canals.... The

We were brought to the Tortuguero embarkment with a Minibus with a stop for traditional Costa Rican breakfast along the way. Our guide was informative. Due to weather conditions (the river was low on water) we had to take a smaller boat first and then transfer to the larger one
