  • Post-hike lunch of traditional Costa Rican food included
  • Convenient round-trip transport from La Fortuna hotels
What to expect
  • The adventure begins with pickup at your La Fortuna hotel and a scenic drive through landscapes rich with tropical beauty and wildlife habitats. After arriving at Tenorio Volcano National Park, embark on a moderately challenging hike through the park’s protected habitat. Along the way, your guide helps scout for animal sightings and points out highlights of passing flora and fauna. The effort is well worth it when you reach the beautiful, bright-blue waters of Rio Celeste (Blue River). The otherworldly hue is thanks to converging volcanic minerals from two different rivers, resulting in a rare and photogenic chemical reaction. Snap pictures from a lookout point, admire a tropical waterfall, and see the point where the river changes color. You also have a chance to soak in natural warm-water river pools if you like. Relax on the return drive to La Fortuna, where the full-day tour concludes with drop-off back at your hotel.

This was a terrific day. Thank you so much Mauricio for sharing your enthusiasm for all the beautiful nature in Costa Rica. Visiting the national park was so much fun with a guide and I’m glad we didn’t do it alone! Mauricio did not miss a thing and pointed out several birds and plants that I never would have noticed on my own. Our guide was highly proficient in both English and Spanish and accommodated everyone on the tour.

Swimming was amazing, lunch was amazing, the tour group was fun; everything was perfect.

Gracias por todo! Es un viaje de que nunca me voy a olvidar.

We enjoyed the trip so much! Our enthusiastic guide Mauricio showed and explained us many plants of the rainforest on the way to the waterfall and let us try several fruits and spices. Furthermore he was very caring and engaging.
Also the local restaurant was very delicious.
Highly recommended.

Red Lava did a horrible job of organizing this day hike. Pickup was supposed to be at 7:10. After I called them at 7:30 they advised pickup was now going to be at 8:20. We were then picked up in an employees personal car and then met up with another passenger who said she’d been at the van waiting for us for over an hour.
Then we drove about 30 minutes to be told we would need to wait for two more people to join the group. Sometime around noon finally made it the waterfall trail and the tour guide kept rushing us to speed up cause it was going to rain... it never did. I know my husband and I were significantly older then the others in our group but he made us feel as if we were an inconvenience and a burden.
I’d highly recommend this waterfall hike, it was really beautiful and could have been a great experience if it was better coordinated.
Recommendation for tour company: stick to your schedule and if situations occur have the decency to call your customer. Also do a better job of coordinating the activity level and/or age of your tour groups if you are going to force the hike being completed in a certain timeframe. A couple in their 40s and 50s, even if they are active, aren’t likely to finish a hike in the same time frame as those in their early 20s. Also this tour group offered no bottled water at all at any point! Even when we went to lunch we were told not to drink the tap water but there wasn’t any bottled water available even to purchase!

The pick up was going to be later then originally mentioned and we called the hotel the night before so they could let you know. It appears they didn´t pass the massage. As you know there was a truck blocking the road not far from your hotel. The driver had to hike up to and then walk with you to the car. This caused additional delay. We don´t charge extra (like most companies do) for pick ups at the remote hotel you where staying at. To make it somewhat cost effective we send a car while our minibus does the pick up in the other hotels. Although we try our hardest to make the logistics smooth there are times things don't work out as planned. We regret that this caused a bad start of your trip. The thing that worries me most is the behavior of the guide. There was no need for him to rush the hike and I apologize that he made you feel like a burden. This guide came highly recommended to us and got a great response the first couple of weeks. At a certain moment we noticed a decline in work quality and we got several complaints. We no longer work with him because after a first correctional conversation he did not improve. I expect you recognize from personal/professional experience that people can start out very good and show a different face when the honeymoon weeks are over. ps. I will look into the lunch/water situation. There should always be plenty free water,

Just had this tour on Dec 10, 2018. Rio Celeste was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. It was raining a little bit, but I could still see the light blue color water. Our tour guide, Marcos, was awesome! He is very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. They picked me up on time at my hotel in La Fortuna. Also very delicious lunch after the hike. Excellent tour over all. Totally recommend!

Booked online & unfortunately they were over an hour late to collect me with no communication which caused a lot of stress. My hotel called them after 15mins, to be promised they would be there in 10 mins - but it took an hour. My hotel receptionist said that this was common with this tour operator. A reputation for poor organisation & unreliability.

Finally collected, and through a mobile phone call - turns out they need to check if the water was blue before setting off. Would have been good to know that in advance. Set off for a 1hr 30 min drive in a beat up car with the driver only speaking Spanish. Not an issue if you want to practice your Spanish. Carlos was very sweet, pointing out any animals we could see as well as stopping off to see a giant tree.

The tour itself was good, Jonathan’s English was great & he was full of facts about the nature around us inc spiders & little terrapins we found. The Rio Celeste is truly beautiful & majestic to see.

The food was classic Costa Rican cuisine of rice, beans, plantain & your choice of meat/veg. Pretty standard food. Ok quality.

All in all, the hike was beautiful but I wouldn’t recommend using this tour company as other tours I went on with other companies were way better organised. They were so late I very nearly abandoned them for another tour so not to waste a precious day of my trip. Major stress levels ensued which wasn’t a great way to start the long day.

Hi Sunnylady, Again sorry for the late pickup. As I explained in the personal email I send you it was a mistake I made*. When we corresponded it was at night for me and the next day I didn´t process correctly what we agreed on. Besides the obvious apology I also asked if the effort we made: a private car, driver and guide, was to your satisfaction and if you felt that we had made up enough for the discomfort. Since I got no response I am now kind of surprised that you prefer this way of expressing yourself over the option of direct interaction. The fact that your hotel talks badly over us is not surprising. The hotel offers (over-priced) tours as well and we are in competition. When a person does not book with them they have no problem in smearing that company. I hear stuff about that hotel as well but I try to show the decency to let them handle it themselves. Glad you did like the activity and luckily it is easy for any reader to see that the tours we operate bring a lot of enjoyment to many people. *Just a short reflection. In this 24hour economy and interaction via whats-app, email, live-chat ect. one extends his availability to almost 100% (especially in tourism where you communicate with people in different time zones). I have to secure that things I agree on far outside standard office hours get the same quality follow up as the ones I handle during office hours. It´s 2018 reality of which I hope only this mistake is the result.

We booked two excursions through Red Lava: the 6hr Arenal Volcano Hike and the Rio Celeste Hike. My friend and I were fortunate enough to be the only two people on both tours, likely due to it being the end of summer and not many tourists were traveling in the city. Our guide for both tours was Daniel Ryan. He’s extremely knowledgeable, observant, and considerate. The Arenal Volcano Hike was fairly easy, there is an observation deck with a great view of the volcano and lake Arenal. The hotsprings/mud mask/cocktail was a great way to end the hike. Daniel pointed out a lot of wildlife and fauna. He exhibited a vast knowledge about and passion for all the wildlife of Costa Rica.
I left my tennis shoes in the back of the car after the tour. Later that night, we ran into Daniel at a local bar and he called his boss and walked us to the Red Lava Office so I could retrieve my shoes. While there we had a long chat with the owner of the company, a very approachable and intelligent man.
Because our tours were essentially private, Daniel allowed us to spend as much or as little time as we wanted at key points in the hike. We were driven by private car both times, which was much more comfortable and faster than taking a shuttle bus. Later in the week, we went on the Rio Celeste tour. Daniel picked us up at our Airbnb at 8am, we stopped at a bakery up the street for coffee and pastries. During the hour and a half drive, Daniel stopped by a small stand and bought two pineapples, one of which we ate after lunch at a local soda and the other was for us to keep. The Rio Celeste Hike is a bit more difficult. The hike itself is very rocky at points. Daniel allowed us to choose whether we wanted to see the blue river or waterfall first. After the hike, Daniel bought us fresh coconuts from a vendor outside the park which we drank the water from on our way to the next destination. Because it was just the two of us on the tour, we ate lunch before going to the natural pool to swim. The local soda that we ate lunch at was incredible. On the way back to town, Daniel stopped by a local stand and bought a bag of lychees which we ate on the drive.
Overall, the hospitality and vibe of all the staff at Red Lava made our trip to La Fortuna unforgettable. 10/10 would recommend.

Very nice, scenic hike but what made the hike excellent was our tour Guide Eric. He had so much passion for the wildlife and the land that he calls home. He showed us Frogs, snakes, birds, sloths, monkeys and even stopped on the road to help a turtle back into the wild. Defiantly recommend.

This tour was well worth the 2-3hr hike to the river, however it was definitely rough. The tour guide stopped to give us a few minutes to rest from time to time & teach us about different plant species, animals, etc that we encountered along the way. The stop for lunch was great & the food was delicious. We were scheduled to be picked up at 7:30am & when it was almost 8am & no one had showed up yet, I used the phone in our hotel lobby to call & they notified me that the driver picking us up was nearby & they were just awaiting confirmation from someone at the park letting them know if the river was indeed blue that day or not, so they could avoid wasting our time & refund our money. I thought that was very reasonable & nice of them to consider ahead of time. The tour was about 2 hrs from our hotel so they picked us up by car. We were a small group, just us 2 & a pair of college students. The hike was intense, lots & lots of walking up & downhill, with some muddy & slippery paths.

Very nice trip with Nano and Carlos to the Rio Celeste. Along the way they pointed out and stopped for us to take photos of sloths, toucans, and howler monkeys. The tour itself was a nice hike through the jungle to a waterfall, viewpoints, and finally the area where the two rivers meet and change colors. Be prepared to bring GOOD boots because it is VERY muddy on the trails and bring a lot of rain gear. When we started the hike it began to rain very heavily on us so we were soaked. The colors were still amazing to see, but obviously not as bright due to the rainfall. It was still worth it in the end. The meal was delicious too.
