Dye course with free admission to Museum & Exhibition
Mar 2020 • Couples
Our Itajime course was amazing, we learnt a lot about the craft and the staff were very kind and knowledgable and had no problem answering a lot of questions.
Had a wonderful morning folding and then dying our scarfs in their very cute dyeshop. it was lovely to learn about the intricate processes they use to make kimonos and we are still shocked at the length of time it takes to ready the fabric for dying(up to 3 years!)
The museum upstairs is great too, you get to watch a video explaining every type of Shabori with examples shown in the museum.
Beautiful work overall to see & happy to take a slice of it home! Thank you!

Fantastic afternoon!
Aug 2019
I stumbled upon this place when looking for something to do one afternoon. Was so happy I did! A friend and I did the silk dyeing experience and had a blast with the kind teacher. For those of you who don't speak Japanese, the docent the day of our trip spoke excellent English and explained the history and method of shibori in detail.

A great experience for those looking to take a step back from the crowded main streets of Kyoto!

A delightful experience
Dec 2019
I had a truly delightful time making my own scarf. The instructor spoke great english and was friendly and helpful. Making the scraf was only part of the experience and it was very interesting to watch how the Shibori craft is done. There were also the most exquisite kimino and tapestries on view in the museum. A truly wonderful way to spend some time in this beautiful city. Thank you

What fun!
May 2019 • Friends
We spent a couple of hours here. We participated in a class where we tie dyed a beautiful silk scarf and then toured the museum. The video was really helpful in explaining how complicated the process is in creating shibori items. Lots of fun items in the gift shop that were reasonably priced. Plus we went home with our own silk scarfs! The instructor was friendly and really helpful. Don’t miss this!

Loved the cultural aspect of making a scarf using ancient methods.
Oct 2018 • Couples
This was so much fun and I love the idea that you have the scarf as a souvenir afterwards too. The people at the Shibori Museum are so wonderful and nice, the class was great, my husband enjoyed doing it too, and while you wait for your scarf to dry you tour the small museum. Really nice to experience some of Kyoto's ancient culture.

Something different!
Nov 2018 • Family
My mom and I have been to Kyoto several times and were looking for something different to do. She came across this class on Viator, and we signed up. We had so much fun making our shibori scarves and learned a lot in the upstairs of the museum. I highly recommend this class! The people were all very nice and helpful too!

Enjoyable & Informational

If you’re into arts and crafts this class is for you. Nina our teacher was very nice and patient helping us dye our scarves. She explained the step by step process in achieving our desired design. After the class we were also shown a short video on the history of shibori and how the more complicated designs were made. Very impressive. We had fun in this class and best of all you get to bring home your work of art as souvenir.

An educational & fun experience!
Apr 2018 • Friends
Loved the sensei who spoke English so well; liked the interesting hands-on experience with clamping and dying. Pace of the class was just right & the unfolding ceremony was a nice surprise; made my finished piece even more special. The included tour of the museum was wonderful, I came away with a greater understanding and appreciation of the painstaking hours and sometimes, years of work, which goes into the making of traditional kimono fabric!
