- dekoningmhj0 contributionsAn amazing food tour in ChengduWinter and his team, as led by Lily, were instrumental in providing us with an amazing food tour in Chengdu. We visited the key markets, ate all the essential dishes (ie dan dan noodles, Liangfen jelly, rabbit etc.) and ended with a traditional Sichuan hotpot. As a foodie, I knew quite a lot about Chengdu, but this tour gave me much more knowledge and the history on the Sichuan cuisine. Highly recommended!Written 21 March 2023

- Spiffytee0 contributionsHot pot extravaganzaWe did the half day Chendu Back Alley Foodie tour. Lance was our guide and he was very knowledgeable about different foods, bringing us to spice market, tea house and wrapping it up with the best hotpot ever. I would highly recommend any activity he is in charge of, as he knows his stuff. He a really funny guy and was very patient with us, especially because one of us was moving along slowly. Sorry for the late review, buddy!Written 9 September 2020

- alice67330 contributionsBEST food I had in ChinaThis was one of my favorite experiences during my month long tour in China. It was so fun to explore the food market, learn how to make dumplings with fresh ingredients, and finally prepare a multi-course sichuan meal. I learned so much about all of the different spices and enjoyed cooking with the other students. Plus the meal was SO TASTY I still crave it and would go back to Chengdu just for the food in this class!!!!Written 4 February 2020
- Michael F0 contributionsAmazing experienceThe excursion to the local spice market in a small group was a great experience and cooking together was great fun. Our guide was very charming and had lots of interesting details for us. The "treasure hunt" on the spice maket was a great idea! :)Written 13 January 2020
- azitant0 contributionsA great way to end my trip in ChengduI had a lot of fun at my half day cooking class with Lance. His English is amazing and he was very welcoming. It was great that we got to go to the local market before the class to buy some fresh ingredients and learn about the different produce that Chengdu has to offer. The cooking school has amazing facilities and is very close to the market. The professional chef was articulate and animated and the whole experience was very fun! Thank you so much!Written 11 January 2020

We made Sichuan springrolls and Dumplings. After some tea and snacks we started making buns. It was harder than expected but fun to learn. We highly recommend this trip and thank Lance for this special day in Chengdu!Written 28 December 2019
- tiansquared0 contributionsAmazing cooking class! Highly recommend! My husband and I came to Chengdu mainly because of our love of Sichuan food and taking a cooking class was high on our list of things we wanted to do while in the city. After researching and reading all the positive reviews on both Trip Advisor and Air bnb we decided to book the Chilli Cool half day 3 dish cooking class, and it was even more amazing than we could’ve imagined. We ended up booking a private class because we wanted to be able to choose what dishes we cooked, in particular wanting to learn to make our favorite dishes (fish flavor shredded pork, water boiled beef, spicy garlic eggplant). Lance was our guide, and he’s so personable and knowledgeable. He first picked us up from our hotel and then took us to the spice market and then the cooking class kitchen. It was all so convenient. We loved getting to fully experience the market and try fresh spring rolls and even make local dumplings! The cooking class was just as amazing! A wonderful hand on experience and a ton of food. It remains our favorite meal in Chengdu. Lance even helped us take photos during the whole class to document the experience. Highly recommend the cooking class and having Lance as your guide!Written 23 December 2019
- sebastiang8440 contributions“Chilli cool culinary experience”Had an awesome time with Lance, our local tour guide. Had an exceptional time tasting cooking and making new friends! The day started with us meeting him outside our hostel where he took us to a nearby spice market. He showed us all the different chinese spices and locally grown vegetables and meats. Along the way he organized with the stall owners for us to have a taste of a variety of their produce. We where taught some Chinese by Lance, which we used to ask a lady from the spice market to teach us how to fold dumplings. From there we went to the Chilli Cook head quarters for some local tea. After a rest we where met by a professional chinese cheff who guided us in making 3 stunning chinese dishes. We all ate together and shared stories from our home countries. Everything was included in the price along with refreshments as needed. Great for groups, couples and individuals. Overall had an AWESOME time that elevated our Chengdu experience to a new level!Written 20 December 2019

It was a pleasure to discover a local market and learn how to make some sichuan dishes with a chef. Thank you Lance for your kidness and "the happy mood" (+ the mini chinese lesson ^^). - unhuic0 contributionsGreat cooking experienceWas a great afternoon walking through a local market and then cooking some popular dishes from the region. Pick up was on time and efficient. Lance was patient and flexible stopping and answering questions at the market, we never felt rushed. The cooking lesson was organised well and steps explained clearly with same time demo and cooking. Our menu was mapo tofu, double cooked pork, steam and seasoned eggplant, fried spicy cabbage and kung pao chicken. We tried the dishes after cooking them each time. At the end we sat and ate an early dinner. The only suggestion would be to reheat the food at the end before the sit down meal as weather was cold and dishes also became cold by the time we finished the last one. However, the added complimentary dumplings in warm soup was a nice touch. We each received a certificate with our Chinese equivalent names and a set of chopsticks. Lance then ordered taxis for both groups at his expense to return to the hotel. I enjoyed the class and found the recipes easy enough to replicate.Written 8 December 2019

Winter picked up us at the hotel and took us to a local market which was very exotic experience. After we bought some of spices or local fruit, we moved to the farm for the cooking class. Although it was 1h drive, driving was comfortable. Once we arrived at the farm, we had a tea time with some snacks and started the cooking class. We made mapo tofu, twice cooked pork, and chinese lettuce. The chef was very kind to teach every detail and took care of us, while winter took good pictures and videos of us. We had dinner there after cooking (which was amazing) and winter sent us back to the hotel. Overall the experience was very good and definitely recommended.

My two kids and I had a great time on this tour and cooking class. The spice market was really cool, we got to try some spring rolls made fresh and tried our hand at making some dumplings in the market. The cooking class was a lot of fun where we made Kung Pao Chicken and Ma Po tofu.
Tour guide, Hazel, was friendly and knowledgeable.
Would recommend to anyone visiting Chengdu.

My partner and I booked this tour due to the great reviews on trip advisor. We were not disappointed. Lance picked us up at our hotel and we meet the other people on our tour. We drove to the local market where Lance taught us about all of the different produce in Chengdu. We saw interesting animals and vegetables that I had never heard of. We had the opportunity to try samples of different traditional snacks and even made wontons. We went back to the tea house, enjoyed tea and some local snacks and met the chef we were cooking with. We cooked 3 amazing tasting dishes. It was a great afternoon learning about traditional Sichuan cuisine and learning more about the culture through Lance. We will definitely be cooking these meals back home if we can find all of the ingredients!! I would do this experience over again! Thank you Lance for a wonderful tour!

I just completed a two and a half week trip around China. This was certainly the most memorable part. Our guide Hazel, was very informative and helpful and her english was great! She explained what types of food to get in the marketplace, helped us learn how to ask for them, and showed us what to look for in terms of quality. Afterwards, we earned how to cook from a terrific chef who critiqued our skills using various techniques and tools. Finally we enjoyed our food together as a group and had a lovely chat before parting ways.
These kinds of experiences are what I imagine TripAdviser was built for.

What a great time! We were met at our hotel by Hazel, who was English efficient and had a great personality. She took us to the marketplace, explained all of the local herbs, customs, and items in detail, answered many questions, knew the local retailers, Hazel even had some surprises for us en route to the cooking class.
The cooking class was excellent, not rushed, and plenty of food. Hazel made sure that we were taken care of, took pictures for us, and even followed up on WeChat. Thank you so much, Hazel, we enjoyed it, and you were a great host. If you are considering this tour, do it. We were delighted with the experience.

This was a fun way to see beyond the touristy side of Chengdu. Our lovely guide,Lance, took us to a local market. He patiently showed us all of the spices and entertained us with funny stories. The cooking class only had three dishes. However, I now have a deeper appreciation of the skill required. Lots of fun.

Lance was such a lovely, kind and helpful guide. A very personal attention. You didn't feel you were in a group. His english is also perfect, better than mine!😂
We had a nice walk in the spicy market and if we liked something he would just get it for you. He explained lots of interesting things to us. If we had any question he would try to explain it. I discover some vegetables I never saw before.
We stopped in a stoll and they showed us how to make dumplings. Such an incredible experience!
He also gave us a paper with a game. I had to order 2 pieces of tofu. I learnt how to say it in mandarin!
Afterwards we had some tea and the snacks we bought in the market. The house is so clean and cute. And then we started cooking with the chef. She was really good. Thanks god Lance waa translating! We learnt a lot. And the best part... The delishous food we ate! We also tried some plum wine we bought in the market and he gave us a nice local beer called snow beer. So nice!
Thank you so much for your hospitality and the great experience!

I knew in China I wanted to do a cooking class and in Chengdu with all those incredible chillies and peppercorns I knew it had to be here. It just so happened my hostel used this company, and wow thank goodness it did! From the second Hazel picked us up with her big happy smile I knew we were in safe hands. She was amazing the whole time, she had so much information for us going around the markets and she answered all our questions perfectly. The challenges were so much fun and the spring rolls at the market were insanely good. The cooking class was amazing, we made delicious dishes. And we all enjoyed eating them a lot. We had a fun group and we spent the afternoon eating, laughing and cooking up a storm. The 3 dishes we made we so delicious and we even got the recipes for them plus others too. I cant wait to cook these dishes myself when I get home. It was a super fun day and it was so chilled out and not rushed at all. In fact make sure you have enough time to do this so you aren't having to rush off as it was a great experience. Definitely the best cooking class I've ever done before. Thanks to all who made the day so good and thanks again to Hazel for being a great host!

What a better thing to do in Chengdu than learn about Sichuan cuisine! Had,a Great time learning, about the local foods at the market. Our guide Lanse had an easy-going way, knew the names of all the Chinese foods in English and even ended our tour with a small gift For each of us! The food was tasty and fun to prepare too. I have booked a 2nd tour to learn how to make noodles.

Thanks to Hazel for a wonderful morning and the entire Chilli Cool staff for a pleasant experience from start to finish...and even with the hotel booking cut on our price everything was affordable and maybe even underpriced. So much genuine local knowledge, Hazel was personable, well researched, and genuine/honest in her reactions/thoughts (increasingly rare in the service industry) which helps to make you feel more welcome and accepted. Getting to fold dumplings in the spice market, having cute missions to accomplish, even watching the young kids faces when I scared them into thinking I was going to cut my fingers off and having the opportunity for light conversation over a meal after cooking together.
Highly recommended.

Hello all. Question about the pricing for this cooking class. The price listed is -from 37.50; however, when I click on the reservations link, the price for one person is 76.00. I am familiar with the meaning of the word -from..., but are there any classes at all for the price of 37.50- for one person? This class looks like fun!!! I will be there in the middle of June. Would love a specific and firm price!! Thanks!

Question, please. If the entire event lasts four hours including touring a spice market, etc., what amount of time is spent cooking the food? How many dishes are cooked? Lastly, do we all completely participate in the food preparation and cooking, and how many people are in the class? Do we all sit down and eat our meal also in that four hours? Thank you!

When I did this tour there were just two participants. Time spent cooking the food: about one hour. About 3-4 dishes as I recall. And, YES, both of us were expected to help cook, though there is a chef on the premises who directs/assists, etc. - esp. for the more difficult parts of the food prep (read: Very hot wok!). Variable number of participants in the class I would think, but we had just me and one other person the day that I did it. Yes, sit down and eat the meal during that 4 hour time frame.
