About
Day-trippers you are going to love this one. This is Pula's greatest history asset, and it will blow your mind. The grandiose Amphitheater, one of the largest in the world, was built during the 1st AD under the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at around the same time as the Colosseum in Rome. The ground plan is elliptical, the longer axis measuring about 130 m and the shorter one about 100 m. This huge and magnificent structure is assembled solely from local limestone and is known as the Pula Arena. Although it underwent a great deal of restoration work, the site can still seat 5,000 people and is used in summer as a venue for festivals and performances. But that's not all. Get to the underground passages, once used by gladiators, and visit a permanent exhibition of amphorae and equipment used in the production of olive oil in ancient time.

Great place, terrible staff
Definitely place to visit in Pula. unfortunately, information on Web is outdated or plane wrong, and staff in ticket office arrogant and rude when asked for more information about events or tours published online. WTF..... Don't buy a ticket, have a stroll around the arena and spend your hard earned cash on beer in a Caffè bar Scala. There is a great view inside arena, right from the table. Did I mention cold beer? ....doesn't get any better than this.

Great amphitheatre

Visited when it was pouring with rain not the best for photos but can't control the weather 🙃. Very impressive amphitheatre and the tour below the theatre was very informative.

Amazing sight in the Centre of Pula
Oct 2019
The Amphitheater is among the best preserved and one of the older ones. It is very picturesque at sunset when the stone appears to change colour. Take a visit inside and imagine what went on in this Arena ( its known locally has the Arena) While you are there you must go below and see the chambers where the animals and slaves were kept. They also have a display of old wine making materials and presses. All in all well worth a visit.

Not crowded at all, and a great place to experience history. This place is very well preserved and the lack of crowds was wonderful.

Fascinating but could be so much more

How could you not be bowled over by this place? It is so well preserved and right in the middle of the city. We took our 2 boys 7 and 4yrs, who were so keen on going to see where the gladiators fight, but there is so little to keep them interested. (Audio guides not ideal with kids) The only thing we saw was one guy dressed as a gladiator and hardly any signage/pictures/trails for kids. A real shame really, as with a little more imagination, this could be a magical place for them.

We really enjoyed the arena and all the information it presented. If you go in the summer please bring an umbrella because it is very hot!

Amazing.
Aug 2019 • Family
Only saw the Arena externally, but could still see the well preserved amazing architecture. So definitely worth a visit and will definitely go inside next time when it is hopefully not so busy and hot. I imagine a good time to go is during the early evening when it’s a bit cooler, but the film festival was on when we was there so was unable to do so.

If you are in the region it is definitely worth a stop. Not so crowded as the big brother colosseum and for our kids the area under the arena was the most impressive part. It took as appr. one hour to walk around, parking space was no problem.

Night and day
Jun 2019 • Couples
Arrived when the foo fighters were having a concert there. It was lit in different colours, and the sound coming out was amazing (we walked around at night). Made you think about the noise and atmosphere when it was used for fights. The building is amazing but info is poor (didn't want the audio tour which costs more). The leaflet has numbers, never found half of them. Also nearly missed exhibition below ground. Why is this exhibition about a Roman villa, an olive press etc? Why not about the arena? And boards with info are badly placed and written in small writing. I wanted to know what 'beasts' were people fighting? That bit needs modernising.

A ‘must do’
May 2019 • Couples
One of the best things to see in Pula, nearly all intact but somewhat skeletal compared to some other amphitheater s , small exhibition below is worth seeing for the tunnels. You can actually walk round the outside and see virtually everything if you wanted to.
