    Pacaya Volcano
Stop: 3 hours - Admission excluded
Pacaya is one of the most accessible active volcano walks that you can experience in the country. The tour starts with a pick up and transfer from any centrally located hotel in Antigua. After one hour ride you will arrive at the entrance of the National Park where you have time to go to the bathroom and prepare your self to climb. The hike is a moderate degree. We suggest to wear hiking boots, and a hiking stick, if you don´t have one you can rent a wooden stick that the locals can rent you for as little as Q5.00. This tour can be walking or in a horse (horse is not included). After walking along the trails of the volcanic sand with great views, you will reach the plateau from which you can see the main crater of the volcano. For safety reasons is not possible to visit it, but you will see some steam emanations produced by the heat of the volcano. Come across the dried lava fields to roast your marshmallows. After a while, is time to start to descend and take your bus back to Antigua.

This isn't an easy hike. Anyone who's saying it is must be in great shape and hike frequently. If you're a beginner hiker, this will be a difficult hike. Our tour guide went up FAST power-walking up the trail and didn't wait for people. Since I was at the end of the group and would have been slower, I was worried about getting left behind and felt like I had no choice but to pay for the horse ride. That's ok because it was cool riding the horse, but would have liked to try going up at a slower pace. 1 other person in our group paid for the horse as well and a few others considered it. I paid Q100 for the horse to bring me about 75% of the way up. No one in our group bought a walking stick and it seemed like no one needed it. I bought a flashlight for this hike since the instructions said you needed it for the afternoon tour, but I never used it because it was still mostly light out when we finished. I was picked up a little before 2 and we got back into Antigua around 7pm - 5 hours in total.

I enjoyed this hike so much! Not only did I hike an active volcano but I enjoyed getting to know the other people in our group and the information (facts) that our guide gave us. Her dog Terry was great entertainment as well and led us along with her. Reaching the top was an amazing feat and roasting marshmallows was fun.

The best part of this walk was the view of Volcanos Agua and Fuego as the clouds rolled past and the sun was setting. Overall, a great time!
I did this same walk 4 years ago and solid, supportive shoes are a must. The path is steep, uneven and rocky. A light rain jacket or shell to protect from the wind at the top. The last 3/4 of the trail was in the dark, so a small flashlight is handy.
Take some water and a snack because it’s about 6 hours from the pickup to drop off time.
If you need some help, they have horses.

We did the half-day tour from Antigua and we had a great time! My partner and I are moderate hikers and did not find the hike to be particularly challenging but very pretty and a great was to see a volcano. There are some parts of the trail that are steep but then it levels out. The trail has amazing views of Fuego Volcano, and Acatenango Volcano as well as Guatemala City and Antigua. The tour company was good and our tour guide for the trail, Carina, was awesome and very knowledgeable.

It was a large group, so unless you rode a horse and the guide spoke English, you couldn’t learn anything along the way. I don’t think this was a simple hike. It took 21/2 hours and once you were on the lava rock your balance was very difficult. Even my 17 year old fell, catching herself with hands caused lots of blood! Even so, getting close to the peak of the volcano where it was hot enough to roast marshmallows was pretty freakin awesome! Do it!

I was bummed that it was so foggy, but man did I enjoy it anyway. Once you reach the volcano up top, it looks amazing. Even with the fog. We had some toasted marshmallows from the heat of the volcano. Really nice. As far as the hike, I don't know cause I got the horse cause it was so much cooler LOL

We hired Voyager Tours from Antigua to Volcán Pacaya. The shuttle bus was crowded and uncomfortable and we were picked up 30 mins late from our hotel because of issues with other travelers. Despite all of this , it is very affordable and friendly and the driver took us through the safest route possible.

We took the tour from Antigua to Pacaya. The bus was full but by no means uncomfortable. The hike took us about 3 hour and the guides provided marsh-mellows (although they don't really "roast" over the hot spots). I'm not sure why anyone would go with one of the more expensive tour companies. This was well worth the price and didn't feel like corners were cut.

Got my transportation tickets through TripAdvisor - shouldn't have. Get them locally for 1/2 the price. Van ride was fine - as is standard, the minivans have minispace for knees. Upon arrival, was offered to "buy" (it really is a rent) a hiking stick for 10Q. Bought it to support the local economy, but it turned out to be an excellent support for my bad knee. Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the region, with his Spanglish (as he called it) much better than mine. He ably herded our diverse group of about 16 up the some 1500ft vertical hike for about 1.5hrs. An injured knee led me to be the last in the group, thus having a herd of horses breathing down my neck, with constant offers to buy a ride up the hill. A couple in our group did do that, as the hike is on the strenuous side for most folks. We were lucky with weather, got nice views of the smoking volcano (about another 1000ft up above the end of the hike). There is a stand up there selling artisanal objects from local cooperatives. Bought some to support the economy, and they were nice. There is also a food stand there, and you do get to roast marshmallows in a hole in the ground. We were a bit at a loss, as we weren't really sure that this was the end of the hike- perhaps I missed the announcement being one of the last ones up. This appears to be a favorite hike, with lots of people coming up as we were returning. I liked the choice of starting early, since there is very little shade and you're hiking in black volcanic ash. Overall, a fine experience, with another volcano under our belts.

Doable from Guatemala City. Used an Uber ride. Picked up by the tour’s van at Cafe Condensa. Approximately more than an hour ride. Beautiful scenery.

Got a hiking or walking stick at the entrance - 5Q. Bought the entrance ticket fee- 50Q. Our group had 3 tour guides.

Tour guides and people there were so nice. We really enjoyed this active volcano hike.

Felt like on Mars which I have never been. LOL.

The tour $ is so reasonable.
