Overview
Take a deep dive into Peruvian culinary culture during this cooking class at Cusco's Marcelo Batata restaurant. Eating at local restaurants can give you a taste of the food, but learning to cook it yourself from an expert chef takes it to a new level. Accompany your host on a shopping trip to the San Pedro Market, before returning to the kitchen to learn typical Peruvian specialties.
Highlights
  • Learn how to shop for fresh ingredients in a local market
  • In-depth commentary on Peru's culinary history from a chef guide
  • Step-by-step instructions for several dishes that you can recreate at home
  • Learn how to make a Pisco sour, the national drink
What to Expect
Once you arrive, meet your chef/instructor and listen to a brief introduction on Peruvian cuisine. This class is geared toward curious travelers that want to learn by doing, not just by eating at local restaurants. Through the chef's commentary, come to understand the history of Peruvian cuisine in a way that you couldn't by simply tasting a few local delicacies. Head to the San Pedro Market on a guided tour, where you learn how to pick out the best ingredients by color, aroma, and texture. Taste several varieties of exotic fruits endemic to Peru before returning to the restaurant's kitchen for your cooking lesson. Learn how to make dishes, such as ceviche with fresh fish, the national drink pisco sour, and lomo saltado (stir-fry dish). Then, sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

We didn’t have as much fun as other reviewers. Maybe it depends on the chef. We had a woman who was humorless, dry and delivered like a lecture. No trip to the market which would have been more fun than the educational room. Plus she didn’t even send us the recipes afterwards.
