Stop for a photo op at Beijing National Stadium, the famous “Bird’s Nest” from the 2008 Summer Olympics. Unlike the tourist-packed Badaling Wall, which is closer to the city, Mutianyu remains less explored, so you have time to leisurely wander the iconic monument without the crowds. You can even climb ancient watchtowers for views of the surrounding countryside. Break for a mouthwatering authentic lunch at a local restaurant. Then get ready to shift gears—and jump over a 1,000 years forward in time—at the 18th-century Summer Palace, known as the best-preserved imperial garden in the world. Enjoy the UNESCO-listed landscaped grounds, once home to powerful Qing rulers, before getting dropped back at your hotel in Beijing.

Fluent in English (and Chinese of course) and energetic, it was great to have Linda as our day tour guide. She made things run smoothly and her foresight and planning helped to facilitate our wish to try, amongst others, the cable car up and toboggan down the Great Wall even though there were significant crowds that morning. The tour happened in April 2019 but this review is posted much belatedly!

We went to Mutianyu and Summer Palace with Jimmy. He was a wonderful tour guide and made sure we were comfortable the whole time. Since we were there in January, it was less crowded, and still had some snow. Such an amazing experience! We went to a private home for lunch. My friend is a vegetarian, and Jimmy made sure there would be a selection for her as well. The dumplings were fabulous! Then we went to The summer palace. Such a sight! The lake was frozen, and everyone was still utilizing it! I cannot say enough about our tour guide Jimmy, he even let us shop and translated for us.

Qing & her team were very easy to work with- Qing was our tour guide, translator, photographer, & provided transportation from our hotel to both locations. She made our tour a memorable learning experience & we are glad we chose to work with her & Discover Beijing Tours. We would definitely book Qing again when we return to Beijing!

Wow! What an amazing day we had with Qing, who took us to the wall and the summer palace. She told us awesome stories, gave us great tips for going around Beijing, took really cool photos (she knows all the best spots), and was so nice and professional. A huge thank you to her and our driver who made our short trip to see the wall 100% worth every penny. I can’t wait to come back and see more!

This was the very first tour I’ve been a part of. Our guide Qing was amazing! She talked about the history and gave us a bunch of information on the locations we visited. She took great photos for memories and was overall great to be around. Would highly recommend this tour and tour guide.

As part of a whistle stop tour of three Chinese cities I decided to book to go to the Great Wall and Summer Palace. Susan the guide met me at the hotel and we were driven out to the wall. A pleasant drive that didn’t take too long.
The Great Wall was deserted as it was snowing (making the pix even better). We gingerly climbed up both sides and Susan was kind enough to get a few pics of me along the way. We counted 5 others on the wall! Lunch followed (massive buffet), Jade shop then Summer Palace. I would have liked to explore the palace more but I think that involved different tickets. Following this driven back to hotel.

All in all a good day and pleasant company

This day is one I will never forget. We went on the fourth of July... the HOTTEST day. Lucy took us to a private part of the wall and knew the best spot to take pictures. I have SO many pictures from that day that I will always treasure. It has always been a dream of mine to go to the Great Wall and it exceeded every expectation. My mom absolutely LOVED every picture she took of my brother and I and we used it for our christmas card. She then took us to the most delicious lunch. She ordered the BEST meal for us and we still dream about that lunch. One of the best meals I have ever had. I can't share enough great things about this day. We ended at the Summer Palace which was beyond gorgeous. We still talk about this day frequently.

Took this tour last week with the lovely Linda. Easy pickup from our hotel and it was a nice drive out to the Great Wall. The wall was covered in snow so we had some real “picture postcard” photo opportunities. Linda’s knowledge of the Wall and general Chinese culture was amazing and I would have no hesitation in recommending this tour.

Definitely not an enjoyable experience, I really had high hopes since the Great Wall was the main reason why I visited Beijing. I had taken a private tour with another company the day before and I had that as comparison (good and pleasant experience). I would say I am a person with a high tolerance and I usually go with the flow and takes things as they are. This time I feel strongly about sharing my experience.

I called the evening before to confirm everything was good to go, the person on the phone was very helpful, confirmed my hotel information and offered an early start to which I agreed. The next morning I wake up, get ready and meet the guide in the lobby. The first shock came as soon as the car door opened, there was an extreme and strong smell of smoke inside and I could barely breath. (In comparison, the car from my different tour company the day before also had a smell of smoke but it was 100% tolerable). I am only a social smoker myself and I am pretty tolerant to smoke and it's smell but this was so extreme I had to cover my mouth the whole long way to the Great Wall (about 90 min).

Our tour guide Sophia tried to make small talk but she definitely was not interested or genuine and seem bothered to be there. She explained very little and the few questions we asked would usually not understood and we were given an unrelated answer. I listened to the answer and then I would try to ask the question again or rephrase it. I was only successful a couple times. The guide was constantly on her phone (sending and receiving some sort of voice messages all day).

Lunch time came around and that wasn't any better. Most of the time I felt the responsibility to start a conversation, keep it going and lift the mood of the day. We were shown a couple options to eat at a mall (including Pizza Hut) and finally walked in into a Chinese restaurant. Our guide gave us the menu and did not introduce the restaurant or gave us recommendations. She continued to be on her phone and still seemed bothered to be there. In contrast, we were sitting right next to a table with a couple and their kids with a private guide. They were laughing and talking about the day and their food, a couple times myself and my partner would overhear their conversation and get involved (which they didn't mind).

After lunch we continued to the Summer Palace (which is a beautiful place), nothing changed much in regards to the quality of the guide. We finished after the boat ride and then stopped at a pedestrian bridge near the Beijing National Stadium (nest) to take a picture. Day concluded at our hotel were our guide Sophia got out of the car with us, we thought we would say our goodbyes or something along the lines but instead she only said she needed to use the restroom. We thanked her and awkwardly walked inside our hotel with a very bad taste about our experience.

In summary, bad vehicle and bad tour guide. The itinerary was great and I'm sure this company employees guides that are passionate about their job and genuinely interested in making sure you have a good experience and get to know the amazing Great Wall and a bit of China. Good luck!

Still in awe of the historical day that we experienced with the most amazing tour guide, Lucy! Traveling to The Great Wall and Summer of Palace was amazing and only heightened by the vast knowledge, sweet personality and wonderful use of English by our guide Lucy. Me and my father were picked up at our Beijing hotel and we drove around an hour and a half to the Mutianyu section of The Great Wall. I specifically wanted to go to this area, knowing it wasn't as crowded or as touristy as the Badaling section. A great decision that certainly was!
The area of was not crowded and there wasn't a cloud in the sky! Even though it as cold and we were bundled, we were well dressed and prepared for our adventurous day. The sun was shining on us as we took the Chairlift up to the wall. We walked from Tower 6 to Tower 1 and spent the entire time just gasping at the beauty and grandness of such history! It's so hard to believe that they started building The Great Wall more than 2000 years ago! Each photo we took was prettier than the next. The Wall seemingly goes on forever and our wonderful guide Lucy had such an awesome mix of sharing her knowledge of the history, taking our family pictures for us and guiding us where to step/where the best views were. We didn't want the experience on The Wall to end! After walking there and back (and taking prime jumping photos) we were interesting in taking the toboggan slide down (though you could have taken the chairlift back down if wanted. And you also have the option of a Gauntlet ride up and down if desired). The slide was unique and cool and totally worth it. Your own lever controls your speed and I can't recommend it enough -- make sure no one goes too soon in front of you! You want the freedom to travel at your own speed without being forced to slow down for another person.
After leaving the beautiful Wall (and dare I say, almost warm sunshine), we headed on a 20 minute drive for some authentic Chinese food and this was truly the best meal during my trip! Lucy helped us order (to make sure I had eating options that didn't include meat) and I can confidently say that I feasted on the best tofu dish I've ever encountered! Me and my Dad shared a beer as we ate and really enjoyed this culinary experience.
We drove another hour to The Summer Palace and though I'll be quick to say how beautiful these grounds were, I now understand the reason that people say a trip to The Summer Palace is only worth it in the summer. At this point in the day, the wind had kicked in and it was FREEZING!!! With our bundled coats and gloves on, we briskly walked through The Palace grounds. The lake was gorgeous and all the temples and structures rebuilt for The Dragon Lady in the late 1800's were beautiful. We didn't stay too long because of the harsh chill in the air but we're still glad we got to stroll through.
On the drive back into Beijing, we stopped on the side of the freeway to take pictures of the Olympics structures: The Bird's Nest (Beijing Stadium) and the Ling Long Pagoda (the International broadcast centre). Me and my father were consistently impressed by Lucy's knowledge of Chinese History and we couldn't recommend this tour more! Ask for Lucy to be your tour guide!
