About
Exploring Yangon without a guide may mean skimming the city’s surface—missing out on its key places, way of life, and off-the-beaten-track neighborhoods. Delve deeper on a small-group tour that takes you on Yangon’s circular train line, with a guide to explain local life and culture. Pass through often-overlooked districts, stop to visit a local market, savor lunch at a Burmese restaurant, and disembark downtown to see St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Ride Yangon’s circular train line on a revealing small-group tour

What to expect
Life Along the Loop The 28-mile (46-km) circular train has 39 stations and the loop connects several satellite towns and suburban neighborhoods. Riding this local commuter train, the railway network for the Yangon Metropolitan Area, provides a genuine experience of Yangon. Even better, your guide can show you hidden gems that would be difficult to locate on your own while explaining unfamiliar sights and customs. Start your half-day tour in downtown Yangon and meet your guide and small-group companions. First, visit Myanmar's largest cathedral, St. Mary's, to learn about the history of the church. Then, walk over to the Central Railway Station to board the circular train. Begin your journey out of the city center to see an authentic slice of Yangon and its colorful urban lifestyle. Your group gets off throughout the drain ride to explore local attractions. At Insein Station Station, disembark to visit Danyingone wet market, checking out the food stalls and experiencing the rhythms of daily life. Your guide points out items that are considered essential to daily life, and you might purchase refreshments from one of the local vendors. Next up, return to the train and ride to Yangon’s downtown. Have a stop for a tasty lunch of local cuisine. By the end of your tour, enjoy a deeper appreciation of Yangon’s rich cultural heritage, including its colonial past, impressive architecture and spiritual traditions.

Highly Recommend This Experience
Feb 2020
Really enjoyed this since it affords one the opportunity to see people going about their daily lives. I got to talk to the locals on the train; they were all so friendly, as was pretty much anyone I came into contact with in Myanmar.

Yangon circle train
Mar 2020 • Solo
Had a great day travelling on the circle train with our guide Myo.
Such an interesting experience seeing life on the train as it worked it's way around the city.

The Fresh fruits market was the highlight of the trip.

Would definitely recommend.

Experience real Yangon life
Feb 2020
We started the tour by viewing the rich architectural buildings and cathedral, which was a great way to experience the colonial heritage in Myanmar. The circular train was an interesting way to see a different perspective of local Myanmar life. Passengers ranged from regular commuters to people returning from the market, preparing their freshly bought produce for resale. Our guide Peter was very knowledgeable and gave insights to the Myanmar way of life. He showed us the fruit and veg market and described the way locals prepared food. We also joined the evening tour, which visited the pier, another fruit market, electronics market, and finished at Chinatown with some barbecue food. It was a fun day with great company.

Must do in Yangon
Feb 2020 • Couples
This was a viewing recommended to us and one we were interested in but could not expected what we experienced !
We finally got on the train with the guidance of our driver and sat under of fan in a rear carriage!
What an experience we had from the guard with the automatic rifle to the Buddhist preacher a minute did not go past without a change of scenery around the city and a change of personnel wandering the cabin as we were offered food and gadgets !
This was seeing the life of the city in microcosm!
Work is being done so the total trip of three hours is not available but our one hour plus trip endured that we experienced C21st Yangon;the Rangoon of George Orwell and the happy and welcoming nature of the Burmese community!
Tragedy they have lived so long under dictatorial military rule but the essential tolerant and Buddhist nature of the society is seen on this train trip I believe!

Great way to see the city
Feb 2020
This was a great experience. Sat in a carriage with a load of nuns and locals who shared their oranges with me. This is a good way to see the outskirts of the city at very little cost - good and bad.

Train rides provide a tourist with a different perspective of the city
Feb 2020 • Solo
Train rides offer the passenger a view of the city unavailable to most. Cityscapes look quite different when you are looking from behind.
I enjoyed the train trip . My guide, Peter, was extremely knowledgeable. His English was very good.
The train ride around Yangon provides a respite from the daily Pagoda crawl.0

It's rustic...
Dec 2019
...but a great way to see parts of Yangon you may never get to. As of December 2019, it was more of a semi-circle train as parts of the line were under maintenance. We would have loved to experience the full track but it was still worth the effort.

Great tour
I was a little hesitant at first because I read others just went on their own for only a few dollars but having a tour guide always adds value and you get good inside information and meet other travellers. Recommend this tour. Mio was a super guide.
