Highlights
  • Cover more of Hanoi in less time on a private sightseeing tour
  • Letting someone else drive allows you to enjoy the scenery
  • Get the inside scoop on local culture and history
  • Benefit from the undivided attention of a private guide
What to expect
  • After early pickup from your hotel by your private guide, start your Hanoi sightseeing tour aboard a three-wheeled bicycle taxi known as a cyclo. Experience the Old Quarter up close as your cyclo winds through the historical center of the capital, which contains narrow streets and alleyways filled with tiny shops and the daily life of the city. Old streets are named after the crafts that were once produced there by artisan guilds that date back to the 13th century. Your cyclo tour ends at St Joseph’s Cathedral (Nha Tho Lon), a Gothic Revival style Catholic church built in the late 19th-century. Take a break for a quintessential Hanoi breakfast: slurp down a bowl of pho bo (beef noodle soup), then follow it up with a cup of strong Vietnamese coffee. Your guide teaches you the language to order ca phe sua nong (hot coffee with sweetened condensed milk) or ca phe nong (hot black coffee, usually with sugar).  After eating, your climate-controlled private vehicle takes you to Ba Dinh Square, site of the President’s Palace and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the historical One Pillar Pagoda—an iconic Buddhist temple that dates to 1049, the Temple of Literature, and view Long Bien Bridge—built during the French colonial period. Relax over a Vietnamese lunch at a local restaurant, then see the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Hoan Kiem Lake (Sword Lake) and Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Mountain), located on an islet in the lake. Finally, your guide accompanies you to a water puppet show that delves into Vietnam’s mythology and traditions. Enjoy another classic treat, quaffing a local beer at Bia Hoi Junction (aka Bia Hoi Corner), before your guide returns you to your hotel.

Great tour
Dec 2019 • Couples
Sam took around the city yesterday and the tour was excellent. Provided a really good overview of Hanoi and the sites were as promised. Sam was very friendly and knowledgeable and made the day pleasant. Would recommend this tour.

Totally not what was advertised or booked.
Feb 2019 • Solo
I paid for a private tour as well as a sizable surcharge as the tour was during tet. However, when I was picked up this morning (20 minutes late) I was informed that I had to share the tour. Both the other person and myself had each booked a private tour. We both indicated to the guide that this was unacceptable unless we received a big reduction in what we paid for. Later that day he called his “boss” and I spoke briefly to him and he assured me that he was giving me a discount and told me to check my email as he just sent me and email to that effect. I have no internet access except in my hotel and do not have a mobile phone so I could not check it until this evening when I returned to my hotel. There was no email from him and certainly no funds returned.

If that was not bad enough, the tour was far from what was advertised as it being.
1. It was supposed to include a Cyclo tour in the morning to the Old Quarter - we had the cyclo tour last thing in the evening and just around the lake - not in the Old Quarter in the morning. We definitely never saw the Old Quarter or got to St. Joseph’s cathedral.
2. We were supposed to stop for breakfast and coffee - this definitely never happened (and as part of the tour we paid for breakfast)
3. We did visit the Ho Chi Minh area but our guide just took us from one location there to another and gave us no information about his life and just named the buildings we passed by.
4. We did go to the Temple of Literature which was most enjoyable but once again the guide just took us in and left us several times to wander around ourselves.
5. We were supposed to go to the Long Bien Bridge but never went there either.
6. Lunch was not at the Ngon Restaurant - that could be forgiven as it is during tet and perhaps it was not open. Instead we were taken to the River Garden Restaurant to eat where we were left and then had to wait for 1 1/4 hours before we were picked up again.
7. As the Museum of Ethnology was closed our guide took us instead to the women’s Museum which we did enjoy.
8. We had over a hour before our water puppet tour was booked for so our guide had us walk to where the theatre was. We did not go to the Ngoc Son Temple in the islet situated on Hoan Kiem Lake which actually was along the way to the theatre.
9. Our guide did not accompany us into the Water Puppet theatre. Our tickets for the show were in the very top row of the theatre and seeing the puppets themselves was difficult. Considering that there were many totally empty rows of seats we wonder if he picked cheaper seats rather than ones we should have been booked for.
10. Finally, we did not end the day as was said in the details with a “personalized experience” at Bia Hoi Corner before being taken back to our hotel.

The whole tour was most unsatisfactory as it did not include most of what I paid for.

Fun experience
May 2018
A really great experience to be amongst the traffic and seeing the sites at a leisurely pace. It is recommended that you negotiate a price before setting foot in the cyclo, unless you are part of a tour group.
By the time we had been around the old quarter and come back to the cyclo station, there was a lovely photo of our trip waiting for us for just $1Aud.
Can’t beat that.

Private day tour of Hanoi city
Started off stickily the guid was half an hour late then we made our way to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum but the que was very long. It state that we get breakfast and lunch so we didn't have breakfast at hotel so very hungry after long wait so we went for lunch and by then I felt quite queasy so didn't eat much. Then the guid arrange the cyclo tour and said he was going for tickets for the next part and we will see him when we got back but no tour guid so we waited 40 min the decided to come back to the hotel and call the office. The guide came to the hotel though to look for us so we co tidied the tour to the Hanoi Hilton (JAIL) and then the water puppets theatre and finally the pagoda. It was a long day with a lot of waiting but the guide couldn't apologise enough the cyclo ride dropped us at the wrong point.

Not so exciting tour
If you are not into learning all about Ho Chi Minh, you can skip the tour. The tour guide is fine. Not much to talk about other than they added 4 more people at the last minute to a supposed “private” tour. They called me at 10pm to ask my permission to add more people. What am I supposed to respond?
There is not much to describe for lunch either. We were expecting some authentic local cuisine. We ended up had a Thai Tum Yum hot pot.
No need to waste your time and money to take the tour. If you know where you are going by google some tours, you can just Uber around to make your day!
