In the Footsteps of George Washington: Spirit Day Cruise to Mount Vernon
From US$54.14
Overview
Traveling to George Washington's Mount Vernon estate by boat means you'll cruise past Potomac River landmarks on your way to the sprawling former plantation, combining two classic DC experiences. Departing from an easy-to-reach location in DC, this narrated cruise to Mount Vernon ensures you have plenty of time to explore Washington's mansion, distillery, gristmill, and gardens, as well as the onsite education center and museum.
What to Expect
Make your way to Pier 4 to board the Spirit of Mount Vernon, a comfortable riverboat with indoor and outdoor seating. Set out along the Potomac River, pass a series of riverside landmarks on the trip over to Mount Vernon. As you travel, an onboard guide shares historical facts and stories from DC's fascinating past.

Upon arrival at Mount Vernon, step into the sprawling estate with free time to explore the grand, 21-room mansion where the Washingtons lived, and walk the winding paths of the English-style gardens.

There's a 4-acre (1.6-hectare) Pioneer Farm on the banks of the Potomac and interpreters to help tell the stories of the roughly 100 enslaved people who lived and worked at Mount Vernon. Before catching the boat back to DC, visit the museum to see interactive displays, an action-adventure movie, and a series of 23 exhibit-filled galleries.

Mount Vernon by boat

The boat ride is 1.5 hours each way, which was a little longer than I expected. Just the right amount of time at Mount Vernon. Enjoyed the views and the history

Boat leaves DC at 8:30 (be there by 8:15 for boarding) and returns to DC at 3:30, so about 7 hours. The ride itself is 1.5 hours long)
