As others mention the big bus and city tours have joined together so we just used whatever bus arrived first. We purchased our tickets with forints 15,000 for a two day ticket, so it would have been very slightly cheaper to pre purchase online in English pounds . But it is very easy to purchase tickets at any stop, and previous reviews worried me that I would have to take my online voucher to a ticket office and I certainly didn’t fancy that.
I got the feeling most people pay at the stop on a credit card.

The bus stops are not well signposted , I enclose a photo of one at opera, but that is better than some. If you download the big bus app it gives you an idea but isn’t always 100 per cent. So when you get off make sure you landmark so you return to exactly the same place.
Dock 6 is located a few minutes walk along the Danube ( stop 2) in the direction of the Elisabeth bridge ( the square grey one) you can see more in the photo. You can use the bus as often as you want ( service finishes a little after 5pm) but you only get one boat ride. They started loading the boat well before departure time.
I think you can also use the green bus but didn’t put this to the test as one of the red/maroon ones always arrived swiftly after we reached a stop.

After using hop on hop off tours in other cities thought this would be a good way of getting our bearings of Budapest, however we were quite disappointed. After reading mixed reviews I checked with online chat before booking that if we booked online, vouchers could be redeemed on the bus and was advised that wouldnt be a problem either with a member of staff or the driver. We were weighing up the option of using big bus or city sightseeing but again asking online chat with both companies we were advised big bus only ran every hour but were able to track when the next bus was due, whereas city sightseeing was every 30 mins but had no tracker or timetable, therefore we opted for big bus. We booked online and received the voucher which then advised we would have to redeem at the shop stop 1 at the Basilica (We were boarding over the other side of the city) Again i went online chat and was again advised we could redeem on the bus. We then went to catch the bus due at 10:14 getting there in plenty of time. At 10.14 the city sightseeing bus came and went, but we continued to wait for the big bus which eventually turned up at 10.44. We were told we couldn't redeem our tickets on the bus but could ride the bus to the Basilica, get off and redeem our voucher at the shop, this meant not only were we half an hour late catching the bus but also due to having to get off to redeem voucher then had to wait for the next bus. So lost at least an hour due to this which when you're on a tight schedule to get everything in isnt ideal. However, when we got on the big bus the interior was decked out as City Seeing and their uniforms were mismatched so when we redeemed our voucher we asked and were informed that the companies had merged so could catch either bus. It would have been helpful if we were told this on the 3 occasions i used the online chat. I feel the buses provided a use to get your bearings and were fairly useful however a lot of time was spent working out timings to get to various landmarks only to find on a few occassions that the bus had left our stop early so missed out on doing some things. We would like to go back to Budapest but now we know where everything is we would use public transport.
(I have left this review on both companies page due to them being one and the same)

A good way to see around the city and get your bearings. Even though we bought the Big Bus tickets from an on-line app we were given tickets for the City Sightseeing bus. When we queried this we were told that all tickets work on all the buses. if this is the case I would suggest that you use City Sightseeing tours instead as the tickets can be bought from booths around the city rather than having to go and pick up your tickets from the office. Also the walk from the bus route to the river cruise is quite a hike, the guide told us the best stop was near the Market Hall but it took us about 20 minutes to walk along to the dock, which is quite near the Chain Bridge. that being said the river cruise along the Danube was a nice break and allowed us to get some really good pictures of both the castle and the parliament building.

We always start a city break with the hop on hop off bus tour as it’s a great way to get your bearings and decide what areas you’d like to spend more time in. This was the worst one we’ve ever taken. Commentary in English was poor and difficult to understand, often out of sync with the landmarks being described. A very annoying “ohh looks like we’ve hit a traffic jam” message was played repeatedly, even if we were just stopped at some traffic lights! The buses with a soft roof have terrible visibility upstairs as you can’t see the top of any buildings you’re passing, it was a bit chilly for fully open top!The free walking tour that starts at 11am was excellent, it left from the corner of St Stephens Basilica, you DO NOT need a bus ticket for this, though they’ll try to sell you one, just turn up and follow along. The boat trip as part of the ticket price was ok, 50 mins up the river a short way, then turn around and back down the other side, nothing special. In the end, we just used the bus as a way of getting from A to B as we’d purchased 2 day tickets. All in all disappointing.

This is a long story but I will to stick to the key points. In lockdown we changed our big bus 2 day ticket due to our flights obviously being cancelled. I was delighted we could amend our tickets as long as we notified within 48 hours of arrival. After 2 years of trying to get to Budapest we were finally on our way. I emailed BB 3 months before the travel date and it was confirmed that the tickets would be available for our trip. As requested I emailed 48 hours before our arrival, however no response was received. This is when it all went wrong. Having had no email response I visited the BB shop in Budapest at 9:30am on the first day of our holiday to be told they are now a franchise and only the London office could provide our tickets (I just travelled from London). The BB gentleman was very helpful and took my booking number, email history etc. and offered to call BB London. At 5pm (he contacted me to say that all sorted and to attend the BB live chat for my ticket code. By this point we had already had 1 day of our 3 day mini break. I contacted live chat and after over an hours of back and forth I was told that my 2 day ticket will be email over shortly. Needless to say this never happened. After sending an email chasing my tickets I actually got an email response 5 days after returning to London. After complaining about the terrible service I was offered a 12 month extension to my 2 day ticket which is obviously no good as I had left Budapest. T Absolutely appalling service and having been a fan of BB before COVID I am disappointed at their lack of care and customer service. I will book with them ever again.

Would not recommend. Very expensive for what we were able to use! Wish i had read all the reviews previously as we had the same issue…
Bought on a whim as the main bridge across the river is closed for repairs and we didnt know the city very well. We were told we could hop on and off wherever and whenever we like which sounds great. Unfortunately some of the buses were full and we were not allowed on!! After a longer wait we were on board however the earphones / audio was generic and not in sync.
Second issue - we were told the ticket includes a 1 hour boat tour. Great we thought… turned up at the 4pm as noted on our ticket. Waited with 25/30 other people with no sign of any staff until 4.30. Turns out the 4pm had been cancelled for the entire month yet nobody thought to inform anyone! Ridiculous and waste of money. We paid £58 for a bus ride that should have cost no more than £10..

We took this tour when our walking guide failed to turn up due to illness. Having taken one of these in London a few years ago we hoped it would be the same.

We bought tickets online which was a mistake. We turned up at stop 1 (of 20) with our electronic tickets and were told we needed to exchange them for physical tickets at their office (near stop 1). The person there was exceptionally unhelpful and rude but we eventually got our physical tickets. I have no idea how this would work if you were on the other side of the city.

The bus we were on was an open top bus but with the plastic roof on. This meant our views through the clear plastic, dirty and scuffed windows was limited. The english audio guide was also extremely poor. The commentator had a strong eastern european accent making them difficult to understand but over and above that the actual content was weak. It felt to me like a list of squares and buildings on the left/right but with little historical content. I felt as though I'd learned nothing at the end of the tour. The ticket price also includes a boat ride up and down the Danube - this was better than the bus but still not great.

Half way through the trip it started raining. The poor people in front of us got soaked when water gushed in through the roof.

The tickets were around €25 each. I feel like I got a €1 bus ride and tour, €8 boat ride and paid €16 for some plastic headphones. Do yourself a favour and buy a 24 hour Metro ticket (around ~€4) and tour the city yourself as it's not difficult. The walking tours are also a great option and much better value than this company.

Buyer Beware:

There are a couple of really important points to be aware of.

Firstly, the Big Bus Tour tickets are now fully interchangeable with the Red Sightseeing and Green buses. If you book directly through the Big Bus Tours website (as we did), it does not explicitly state this. This led to confusion as we waited for a Big Bus Tour liveried vehicle at one particular stop and didn't realise we could have jumped on the first bus which came (irrespective of the company). In near 40 degree heat, this was less than ideal!

Secondly, I found the actual commentary in English really difficult to follow. The commentary was so heavily-accented that both myself and my partner struggled to understand what was being said. A simple improvement would be to get a native speaker of the language to provide the commentary. We have done bus tours in many other cities and not experienced this issue before.

I was a bit dubious about these buses after reading some of the reviews, but I have to say, that we found them to be very good. The staff at the stops were generally very friendly and helpful and the buses were clean other than, on a couple of occasions, rubbish being left behind by some of the customers. This was cleared up at the end stop. The commentary was good and matched the sites; we were told in good time what stop was coming up. It is useful to notice where the stops are on the way round so you know where to get back on again as it is not always noticable (the stop is usually at the same place as service buses). We did travel in October so probably the buses weren't as busy as they would be at peak times, but we always managed to get a seat. Didn't take advantage of the free boat ride as we had already booked separately for this, but would know better next time. You can use one of the other bus companies too, which is handy. The buses are pretty frequent and stop at many of the best places of interest in the city. I would recommend it as a good way to see the city and find out where things are. It's not overly expensive (I booked online) but I see from another review that buying from the staff might be a better option!

They are the SAME company as City Sightseeing! The employee that sold us the tickets told us this. This was supposed to be an advantage, you could hop on any of them, but even being like this, you will wait more than they say. Imagine that they have the monopoly of tourists buses, so they are not concerned to give the best service!

Now about the bus, only worthy if you are disabled or if you have kids. I think your money will be better spent if you take normal bus/metro, rent a scooter or even walk. The city is not so big, so it’s easy to walk. And it’s so easy to take the metro with google maps.

The tour bus take too long to pass, they say is every 30 min but don’t fool yourself, 45 min minimum, and many stops on the map are misplaced, not like the other side of the road, but the other side of the block.

The boat trip was 3/10, unprepared staff, and the boat has many obstacles for you to see the view.

I would recommend to walk as most as you can, take normal bus when needed and buy a premium boat ticket (14 euros instead of 8 euro that this company asks for), so it’s not big difference in price but huge difference in experience.
