About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Chris G0 contributionsThis was cool!Cool experience, easy online booking through to well managed check in at the jetty. Ride itself was awesome with Marc our driver. We drove ourselves to Arthur’s Point as we had booked too late to get the shuttle - not a problem and an easy short journey by car from Queenstown with plenty of parking. Great brewpub nearby to watch the action afterwards.Written 3 January 2024
- Kim-Brian370 contributionsMust do even for the motion sick!So much fun!! Had a great experience from check in with Ali to our ride with Misuzu! Misuzu was super enthusiastic and a great driver! We did about 5 360° spins throughout. I am very prone to motion sickness so I prepped with some ginger tabs ahead of time and tolerated it well! The video recording of our experience was an added bonus! Definitely a must do!!Written 30 December 2023
- FamilyInt0 contributionsExhilarating and great funWe all absolutely loved this experience. Exhilarating, fun and great value for money. Exceptional and talented staff. We then headed across to the Canyon Brewing. Perfect day, thanks so much to all.Written 8 December 2023

- guennie30 contributionsShotover Jet-a 100% must do!Wow!! If I could rate this 6* I would. What an amazing experience. If you do only one Queenstown adrenaline experience do this! The views along the gorge were amazing as we shot along at 90km per hour in parts. The 360 degree spins were great fun. Hannah our driver and guide was fun, knowledgeable about the boat and the area and a crazy but safe driver. The whole team was friendly and so well organised. We turned up a bit early for our booked trip and were quickly put on an earlier one. If you have a GoPro take it as it is the only way you can take photos/video due to safety. Otherwise, buy the photo/video package. It is worth it. Finally, don’t expect to stay dry. I think the Shotover team pride themselves on creating maximum splash for maximum fun.Written 18 November 2023
- K4850WSmargarett0 contributionsDon’t Miss the Boat! What an awesome adventure this experience was! Hannah was in the driver’s seat and I felt completely in safe hands. Thanks Hannah for taking me out of my comfort zone.Written 18 November 2023
- Betsy R0 contributionsAwesome experience for all agesMy teens and 76 year old parents all just LOVED this experience. Laughing and yelling the entire time and a beautiful vista as well. Totally recommend this activity.Written 16 April 2023
- ShirishParanjape0 contributionsWhy no transport?!The Shotover Jet experience continues to be a good and thrilling experience. I recommend booking in advance, particularly during holiday season. My only ‘complaint’ is the lack of their transport from Queenstown City. Previously, we have always been able to use their bus but this time (late 2022), they did not have the option. Hence, we had to use Ubers to get there and back, which cost over $40 per car for the return trip. However, the price with or without the use of their transport option is the same - which, I feel, is unfair to those who are not provided transport option. The least Shotover Management can do is to offer a $5-10 discount if the transport option is not offered/ available.Written 4 January 2023
- hannahfK4936YK0 contributionsONE TO REMEMBERSo glad we chose this experience over the other jet boat experiences overall. The driver Matt was so cool! Gave us some background knowledge about the area, had some great jokes and stories, was a PHENOMENAL driver and truly made our jet boat experience one to remember. On arrival we did have to wait at the door for about 5 minutes with no staff to greet us despite arriving at the time they told us to be there to check in, yelling out and knocking several times. Went from no staff to all of a sudden 5 which annoyed us from the outset. Our driver Matt truly did save our experience overall. Hopefully if you go, you get him! He’s awesome! Scenery was amazing, river was stunning and the route they take you on is beautiful. Such a fun way to spend a day!Written 13 March 2022

It’s a well oiled machine. Check-in, pick up, storage lockers,
Life vests...everything is so well organized and staff is very friendly.
The short experience is fun ...BUT if you have been on a boat or Jet ski before, the experience may not be as “exciting” as they claim it to be. Having grown up on a lake, the tricks and “high speeds” were pretty ordinary. 360 turns were fun and all but at $30 per spin it’s a rip off
Wish I didn’t spend the money-would rather have rented a jet ski and explored the water on the coast for likely half the price

Kia Ora Erinn12S,
Thank you for taking the time to write us an honest review. We are happy to hear that you were pleased by the professionalism of our enterprise and the friendliness of our staff. As an experience that is aimed at providing a thrilling time for all ages we are sorry to hear that it didn't quite live up to your expectations. All feedback is appreciated. The cost is reflective of the high overhead due to the safety measures ensured to make sure all of our guests remain safe during the ride (such as jet-boat part replacement and an extensive training period of our jet-boat drivers).
We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Queenstown,
Ngā mihi,
Max

The transfers: picked up from the central location on time and great commentary on the bus on the way to the shotover. Bus was clean and really nice and comfortable
The check in: we were guided where to go for check in, shown a shared locker to store our bags (shared with the others on the same boat) and given a full length spray jacket and life jacket
The ride: Amazing!
Good parts: James our driver was professional and very clear as he went through the safety information and made sure everyone was ok
Very skilled ar driving as we got as close as possible to the canyon edges sliding from side to side going extremely fast. We were sitting at the front and James made to point to warn us and then everyone behind us that we were going to do the turns - top driver and made it super fun
Bad parts: maybe it was more my understanding on what to expect but the part of the canyon isn't that long that the boats are allowed to drive on so you go back over it a few times which then starts to lose it's appeal. And obviously there is only one canyon but they have multiple boats running so we had to stop on the river and hang off to the side for about 5 minutes while we waited for 2 other boats to pass - just felt like we didn't get our full 'time' of enjoying the experience as we had to just sit and wait
Photos and video - there was someone taking photos for us but what we didn't know was a video was also getting taken. Would have been good to know before we started.
Also, we stood around watching other boats and taking photos for a little while, but when we got back up to where they were selling the photo's, ours had already been removed so obviously didn't purchase them. Would be good if they could leave them up a bit longer
Transfer back: we waited about 20 minutes for the bus to arrive and then there was too many people wanting to go back than could fit on the bus. Some people had to wait another 15 minutes until the next one came. As we had been waiting some time we managed to get on the first bus, but just something to be mindful of

My top line summary is that in this water jet boat ride my wife had a smile so big you could slide a banana through it sideways, we had a blast. You must hold on, feet on the floor and suggest wearing a warm top that you do not mind getting wet. It is like an old fashion E ride at Disneyland. You will turn 360 degrees multiple times and also ride through a beautiful gorge at over 50 km per hour. A great humorous driver is an added feature. As paying customers end there ride, the drivers were applauded.

Great all round experience, only issue-it was raining, and when doing in excess of 80km hr along river, it does hurt your face and you can’t see. Highly recommend to take a raincoat (even if it’s great weather) to wear under what they give you to keep you a bit dryer. As per usual photos are a rip off, as is with every photo package for any trip you do in Queenstown.

We drove up to the start point, it isn't far from Queenstown. The canyon is lovely from various view points. I suffered from extreme nerves and was in a mind not to go on it, but after speaking to the staff, they allayed any fears I might have had. It was with great trepidation I sat in Nicks boat, in the middle, the safest spot, I think!! Within 30 seconds, I was hooked, it was the most exciting thing I have done for many years, I am in my 60's. The fun and laughter, screaming and joyous cackles were all part of the experience. Nicks skills in driving were amazing, together with his warm and funny personality. It was a joy to be in his company. We begged to be taken round again, but 25 minutes just didn't seem enough, it went by so quickly. We were buzzing for the rest of the day and it was truly a highlight of 6 weeks in New Zealand. We bought the picture and video package in the shop, well worth the money for memories that will never fade. Even when we got home, the video struggled to download, the staff were enormously helpful in arranging for it to be sent via Dropbox. So professional. Everything about this business is exceptional and I hope that when we come out of the current crisis, they will be still there giving joy to everyone.

Booked Shotover Jet boat trip with additional instant replay. Fabulous exhilarating. Great drivers who guided the boat down the gorge at speed with 360 spins and close turns. GREAT a must do. Unfortunately it was raining the morning of the trip and they had to cancel the run at short notice but they were extremely accommodating offering to refund in full or rebook We decides to wait for 45 mins to see if they could restart but rain continued so we booked an afternoon run and went back at 4.00pm. BRILLIANT during the second run it started to rain and we understood why it had been cancelled earlier was like being stung in the face by hailstones. Well done Shotover jet for doing as much as they can for the customers

Expensive for a family of 4 and not sure if it was worth the money, an elderly lady on the bank complained to us about the price also saying she couldn't afford to go with her whanau.
The driver spoke too much about irrelevant things, telling us that we can ring them and get a spot on the river but we have to let them no first, we are all tourist, the talk was irrelevant, then she was picking and choosing who she would interact with and speak nice too and had the audasity to laugh and joke that she was from Auckland, this is the driver! well I wish I'd known that before I got in the boat, I wouldn't have got in! Especially after the resent positive covid escapey, I don't not like Aucklanders at all I just wish I was told, then I could make an informed decision for me and my whanau weather to ride or not.
We would've liked to hear about Maori history of the awa considering this is owned by Ngai Tahu apparently!. Well ya wouldn't know it, It was just another business money making venture with a bit of Maori tokenism thrown in there, sorry but the other jet boat providers do better history lessons and if you've been on those ones then you've heard it all before. Uniqueness is what is needed here not the same old, same old. Would've been nice to hear her mention the name of the awa once, it would've been nice to hear her mention Ngai Tahu once, nope nothing! She didn't even mention shot over jet.
The shop has mimimal Ngai Tahu merchandise, and in terms of clothing, what is there definitely doesn't cater to any one bigger then a large, sorry but the other providers beat you on that too, I was very disappointed by this experience. We thought we were going to get a unique experience, it was far from it.

Kia ora Bubbyw,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback, it is extremely important to us to hear our manuhiri's thoughts on our experience, so we can keep on improving our product.
We are deeply sorry to hear you did not have a 5 star experience with us. As a business we welcome everyone from all over New Zealand and are sad to hear that you may not have wished to travel with those travelling from Auckland. We can also confirm all of our staff and manuhiri are fully vaccinated.
All of our drivers have unique trips and commentary styles and we appreciate your feedback from your trip and are always looking at ways to increase our te reo and history into our experience.
Without your valued feedback, we would be unable to further improve our experience for future manuhiri.
If there is any further feedback you wish to share we would love to hear from you - reservations@shotoverjet.co.nz.
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Queenstown.

We thoroughly enjoyed this ride and it exceeded our expectations. It was amazing how skilled these drivers are with navigating these jet boats. It was so much fun and got the adrenaline pumping. Would recommend as an activity to do in Queenstown. We also paid for photos and video package which we thought was reasonsbly priced compared to other photo packages we have brought on our travels in NZ

My husband and I were excited to experience the famous Shotover Jet as our first activity arriving into Queenstown. Unfortunately they’d had some crazy weather the day before which made it unsafe, so rebooking for another day was super easy. They rang well ahead of time to inform us of the possible changes, and then again another hour beforehand to reschedule. We rebooked for a couple days later with no hassle or stress.
The jet boat ride itself was so thrilling. Getting super close to the canyon walls and debris was exciting, and the views as we sped along the river were beautiful. Despite the crazy speed and manoeuvres, we at no time felt unsafe in the skilled and experienced hands of our driver. Thank you shotover jet for the experience of a lifetime, we loved every second of it!

We really enjoyed our ride. Shotover jet is a well oiled machine. We had the front seat and after the ride think that the back row may have been better. The driver does a lot of 360 spins and watching everyone be thrown around would be fun to see. The cost is $159 a person. It was a lot of fun but I am still unsure if it is worth the money. If this is your first time on a high speed jet boat ride then yes it probably is worth the money, if you have ridden one before then perhaps not.

Kia ora ERDFirefighter,
We are delighted that you had an exciting jet boat adventure with us here at Shotover Jet. We have a lot of history in this stunning location, plus are the only company permitted to operate through these canyons, so that, combined with all the 360° spins certainly makes it pretty special here!
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in beautiful Queenstown - thank you again & safe travels.

does the "9:00 am departs 10:30" package mean we will.depart from the shotover river point from 10:30 and will get to the queenstown pick-up point around 10:45?
wanna clarify this specifically as I will join other tour at later time.
also, how do we get the refund if this is cancelled due to bad weather ? if this is the case, is that the staff at the pick-up point would inform us?

Janice im sorry im not sure about the timings for the shuttle bus as we drove out there. In terms of refunds i think they run and any weather conditions. I think the only time they cancel is if the river level is too low.

Hi. Can someone help us with the timings? All listings here start with 1.30 and then give a different departure time like 9.30 for instance. Even the description says departure 1.30 for all.

Can we just drive there or must take the shuttle bus. Can I buy tickets over at the counter?

You can just drive there. I'd say about a 10 minute drive from Queenstown. They have a carpark on site. Pretty sure you could buy tickets over the counter. You'd probably want to at least call first before going to check they are open as bad weather can shut things down sometimes. Also, they may be fully booked or have large groups and you don't want to wait too long.

We are coming in 2nd week of July, is this to cold to go on? All adults, young and old, but we like to have fun.

Going at that speed is going to be cold at anytime but well worth it. The jackets will keep you warm but a beanie or hat will need to be on really well or it will blow off. Go for it! :)

How long is the ride? I’ve read anywhere from 20-40 min
Written 13 June 2018
There are two rides. The shorter one is about 30min. It provides a good view and all the tricks and is a recommended quick ride. The other is an hour and a half and can be done if one has enough time on hand. The experience there is of more than just a jetboat ride.

How cold does it get when riding the boat in July? Any tips on what to wear?

It was freezing in the half hour we spent in May. Good to have gloves. And to cover the head and ears.
