Overview
This trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway is an experience perfect for train buffs or anyone looking for an adventure. Board a train that journeys into a wild and gorgeous landscape, traveling through a part of the countryside that's inaccessible by road. Along the way, learn about the railway's construction and other interesting facts from onboard commentary. Plus, there's an exciting option to extend your trip to Middlemarch, a scenic, small town in the Otago countryside.
What to Expect
Make your way to the Dunedin Railway Station, whose Renaissance revival architecture makes it among the city's most eye-catching landmarks. Step onto the Taieri Gorge Railway, and then pull away from the station and into the South Island countryside.

There's a cafe and bar on board if you'd like to grab a drink or a snack, or just sit back and watch the scenery unfold as a guide shares stories from the train's past, from engineering challenges to the terrain itself. If you've selected the longer journey to Middlemarch, see even more of the landscape, continuing to a railway town in Otago's deep country.

The return journey to Dunedin follows the same route, but gives an entirely different perspective on the green valleys and hills, with twists and turns that keep the ride engaging until you arrive back at the station.

What can I say, the weather was miserable (drizzling & on-again-off-again rain) for sightseeing, but the warmth of the train ride with great narrations made it so much better. The open viewing cars protect from the rain & allow much better views than if you...More

We took a ride on the Taieri Gorge train from Dunedin. It is 4 hours round trip. For the first 30 minutes your view is a wall, weeds, a junkyard or farms and then the view gets better for the remaining hour and a half...More

One of the experiences I was told to have was to take the Taieri Gorge train to Pukerangi, I certainly wasn't disappointed. A beautiful four hour return journey taking you away from civilisation and into the deep Otago. Many beautiful sights around with the Manager...More
