Excellent tour, knowledgeable guide
Jul 2021
I bought the Kiwi tour for Kiwis as a gift for my parents visiting from Australia, Mum and Dad had an amazing time and were full of praise for Tristan’s friendly nature and said he was a gold mine of information. They’re pretty jealous of his IR eyepiece too! And they were stoked to spot some Kiwis as well as a Takahē!

On my end, they were extremely helpful navigating some last minute plan changes due to the Trans-Tasman bubble. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who'd like the best shot at seeing Kiwis in the wild!

Hi Patrick, Many thanks for the amazing review and I'm glad that your parents loved the tour! It's always great seeing one of New Zealands icons in their natural habitat, as well as the very elusiveTakahe. The IR monocular is certainly worth its weight in gold! Wishing you all the best for the rest of the year and beyond. Tristan

Kiwi for Kiwi’s Night Tour
Nov 2020 • Couples
Kiwi for Kiwi’s Night Tour. Last night we took the night tour to Tawharanui. It was the most fabulous experience and Tristan was a really welcoming and knowledgeable tour guide. We started from Takapuna at 6:00pm and the drive up is approximately 90 minutes. Once you get there, the walk is approx 50 minutes each way along gravel paths are wide and good to walk on, even in the dark with red head lamps. There’s a very clean toilet block by the beach, just a few steps from the small car park. The paths are well sign-posted and the surf beach is obviously popular with the locals. We were provided with a delicious light supper while we waited for the sun to set. There were lots of Pukeko with their chicks, Tui, Rosellas, Paradise Ducks, Oyster Catchers & Rabbits around the grassy areas of the Sanctuary.

We’d only ever seen Kiwi in the Zoo before, so we had high expectations that we’d see one on the Tour. Well we did better than that. In the midst of the bush walk, along the wide gravel path, Tristan spotted a large Brown Kiwi foraging for insects. It was beautiful to watch - sadly the photos from our mobiles aren’t great though. Anyway as we walked on we saw another Kiwi which surprised us by dropping onto the path and then crossing in front of us. We couldn’t believe it. Then we came across a Morepork (Ruru) clinging into the branch of a tree and further down the path, another one. The bush was filled with a chorus of birdsong & calls from Kiwi, Tui, Bellbird, Kaka, Pukeko & Morepork - it was magical. The Tour far exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend Tristan and Habitat Tours to other avid native bird fans.

Wonderful Tour
Nov 2020 • Family
Brought our 11 yr old grandson to Auckland to hunt for kiwi in the wild. Tristan did not disappoint and after some daylight exploration of Tawharanui we sat down to a delicious home-cooked picnic tea. Just 5 of us altogether this was very convivial and we enjoyed lots of preliminary information before we were equipped with the necessary torches as the sun set. Off kiwi hunting, we were thrilled to find 2 fossicking in the forest floor debris, near the pathway. Tristan used a night vision scope to seek out the kiwi making for a very successful trek.
Excellent knowledge, great small tour and thoroughly recommended.

Many thanks for the amazing review! It's always great seeing one of New Zealands icons in their natural habitat, especially when they are not in to much of a hurry and run away. All the best and I'm glad that you enjoyed the tour.

A wonderful way to spend your birthday in New Zealand -seeing your National Bird !
Jul 2020
We had a wonderful experience in the company of Tristan who was well informed about the bush and wildlife and had specialised equipment which enhanced the days trip .
We were lucky enough to see a range of native birds ( including the Kiwi and Takehe ) and taken to beautiful areas of bush .
We enjoyed homemade soup and sourdough bread ( vegan )

Beautiful Scenery, Unforgettable Experience, Delightful Tour Guide!
Dec 2019
Our Tour Guide, Tristan, was funny, friendly, very knowledgeable and passionate about the New Zealand ecosystem.

Tristan picked us up at our hotel early afternoon and spoke about what to expect during our tour. The first stop is approx. an hour and a half outside of Auckland. We visited and learned extensively about various trees, birds and insects that are native to New Zealand. We had plenty of opportunities for leisurely strolls anywhere we went.

We were dropped off at the beautiful and scenic beach. Around the beach area is the forest where we were going to observe the Kiwi bird at night time. Prior to night time, Tristan, provided us with an exquisite picnic ranging from delicious homemade meat pies to breads, fruits, cheeses, crackers, spreads, and tasty homemade salads. Tristan at Habitat Tours really went all out.

After we ate, we went into the forest (keep in mind it is very hard to see even one Kiwi bird as they are shy) with our night lights that Habitat Tours will provide. We hit the lottery! We saw the Kiwi bird not once, not twice, but SIX times. It was amazing. We also saw many other species and insects as well.

At the end of the night tour, Tristan drove us pack to our hotel. This was probably the best 10 hour tour I have ever had outside the Auckland area. Not only would I go back myself, but i also highly recommend new visitors to step out of the city and enjoy nature's finest.

Many thanks for your wonderful and thorough review. It was such a pleasure to meet you and take you out on tour; I think you probably hit the record with six kiwi! Unfortunately it might be some time before even I see kiwi again with New Zealand in total lockdown, however our strict measures really seem to be working so we hope to be back doing what we love soon. Even if it is via virtual tours. Keep safe and well during this difficult time - and enjoy your photos and memories of your time in New Zealand.

Amazing Tour!
Feb 2020 • Couples
We went with Pam on an extensive habitat day tour. We did not do Kiwi since this is a late day into evening tour. She is an extremely knowledgeable tour guide who gives her clients tons of info on NZ flora and fauna. She took us to a lovely black sand beach and supplied us with special tea and homemade cookies. The rainforest walk and waterfall was so lovely. A little strenuous but very doable. Can’t say enough good things!

Thank you for your very kind review; it was my absolute pleasure to take you out on tour, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you and your company. The West Coast is really spectacular and well done making the walk to the waterfall! I hope you're back in NZ some time and maybe we'll get you out on our night tour to see some kiwis. All the very best Pamela

Amazed to finally see the national symbol
Feb 2020
After almost 5 years in New Zealand, I was beginning to lose hope of seeing kiwi birds in their habitat. With Tristan and the nocturnal weapon he has, we spotted two from very close, and it was a great experience! The other flora and fauna (some endemic species) along the Ecology track in Tawharanui Regional Park are well worth the visit. Not to mention the picnic dinner, great! 5/5 no doubt

Many thanks for your wonderful comments and review. I loved taking you both out on tour and finding kiwi for you - not so many New Zealanders have seen kiwi in the wild so it is always a very special experience.

A Very Good Day
Jan 2020
We were happy to have joined Tristan for a day tour through Tawharanui Reserve. It was a very good day indeed, we appreciate his keen ears and eyes for spotting the birds we were delighted to see. Tristan clearly has a great passion and respect for the North Island environment and is a great ambassador for NZ Tourism. Top it off with a wonderful picnic and afternoon tea and its top marks from us

Nature tour and kiwi viewing
Jan 2020 • Family
Tristan is brilliant! Had a hike in the afternoon and he knew everything about all the flora and fauna. He supplied a fabulous picnic dinner (which his mom Pamela made!), then our night hike. Thanks to his excellent equipment (including a night vision scope) we saw a kiwi foraging for food, as well as “Nessie” (a six-foot eel) and nocturnal spiders and insects. VERY highly recommended!

A truly fabulous tour!
Jan 2020
Wow!! What a fabulous day I had, yesterday.
The Habitat Tours' Day / Night tour was one of the most awesome experiences of my life.
Our guide, Tristan, is extremely knowledgeable (and a really fun person as well!). He's very easy going, approachable and has a wonderful sense of humour, as well as being so organised. ⭐️
I know that being able to see all the endangered birds on the 'wish list' is not guaranteed but, with Tristan's incredibly skilled guidance, we managed to see not only two kiwis (they're SO much bigger than I had imagined), but other rare birds including saddlebacks and takahe, as well!
What fun it was creeping along the track with our red light headlamps on the night section of the tour!
Haha - how DID Tristan manage to keep a bunch of chatty people quiet as we walked along the track? 😁
And - I haven't even mentioned the amazing picnic dinner we enjoyed... Thank you, Pamela!!
