A great way to start our NZ vacation!
Mar 2019 • Couples
I'm so glad we took this tour with Jen! She was awesome and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning. It was like walking around with a friend who showed us some of the amazing food stops in Auckland! Every place we went was great, food was wonderful and each proprietor was friendly and happy to see us! Highly recommended! This was just day 2 of our 20 day trip to NZ and we could not have been more pleased that we decided on this tour.

Thanks so much for your comments. Jen's amazing and we love having her on the team. We've got some lovely suppliers who really welcome our guests and love sharing their stories and it makes me so proud every day to work with them. If you have any need for recommendations for places to go and eat while you're in New Zealand, please give me a call on 021481177 or email info@thebigfoody.com Best wishes Elle

Perfect ending!
After two weeks of traveling all around the islands, we were excited to close out the trip with a food tour, one of our favorite ways to learn about a city and their culture. I did some research and decided to go with Big Foody, which proved to be an excellent decision. The three of us were the only guests on Jen’s Friday tour and we felt like we were visiting with a friend. Jen took us to amazing locations and gave us advice on additional places to check out. We had an absolutely wonderful time canvassing the city and sufficiently stimulated the economy while doing so. Thank you for the perfect way to end our trip!

Thank you so much! Isn't Jen great! I'm delighted you had a fantastic tour and loved the city. We're so lucky to have great food to show off and well done for stimulating the economy! It's not hard when there is so much deliciousness to buy up! Best wishes Elle

So totally worth it!
They are so accommodating. My husband has mobility issues and after canvassing the area the day prior, we thought we should cancel as he had difficulty with the hills. Elle or Jen adjusted the itinerary to a driving tour instead. We saw a lot more of the city and we were so pleased with the variety of stops and tastings. Jen was our guide as Elle was busy with wedding preparations. Great way to see and taste Auckland’s offerings. Awesome!

TLDR at bottom (The Short)
The way I begun this tour was by not realising it was a tour. My girlfriend (L for short) had organised a surprise for me two weeks back, and it had been building up to the Saturday morning. Throughout the week, all I knew was I needed good shoes, and we needed to be on the road by 8.30am to make it on time. So naturally I had 4 different types of shoes loaded before we left.

To give L some peace of mind, my family had clawed the details of the surprise from her without me knowing, and they all told her how perfect of a plan this was. Their prediction couldn’t have been more accurate.

We started out in a different location from their usual tour, and as me and L wondered around the bottom of Queen Street I joked about the surprise being the McDonalds that was getting closer. She laughed when she said that’s where we were going. Then we met Jen and Elle, who quickly learnt of the fact that I had no idea what was happening and played along by asking if I was afraid of heights or going under ground.

It was right after my answer that I found out we were doing a walking food tour of the Auckland CBD. I am from Auckland, with a love of food and a thought that I knew most of the good places.

I was proven wrong. (To keep a small part of my ego I will add to the end of that: “kind of”).

We were told of the main stops we would be visiting. To my delight, the first stop (and being honest the only stop I heard due to my excitement) was Amano, a place I had visited a fair few times in the past, and gave me a clear indication of the quality this tour would be. This will also be the only stop you hear from me, as I would love you to experience the rest for yourselves.

What I will say, is that every stop we went to was a delight. But the tour was so much more than just the food.

The Staff
The guides we were lucky enough to have with us were so easy to talk to that it felt like we were walking through the city with friends. Elle and Jen were able to make us feel comfortable immediately, even with me and L being the only two on that tour that day. We were able to have great conversations throughout the tour, without a single moment feeling dull.

The Stories
Like I said, the food was not the only part of the tour. During the tour, you find out about the history of the city you are in. The stories behind the buildings, the streets, the land. They also talk about the eateries themselves, giving you so much background to the plate, giving you a real appreciation for what you are about to try.

The Stroll
Yes. It is a walking tour. But don’t be like me, a normal pair of shoes will do. It is not a hike that will leave you out of breath. If that is what you are after, maybe consider doing your lunges at home before coming. The walk is broken up into small strolls, with quick breaks occurring to show you places you may not have known about, recommendations about where else to try in future, and of course....

...The Stops (food!)
Every single place we visited left L and I planning to revisit another day (two of which we have already revisited three times in a single week). Not every stop was a sit down meal, and I was thankful for that! Some stops are to show you the options, some are to get a taster, and others were a little more substantial (with the final stop being a meal). Every stop was delicious, so I was glad we were able to try everything without being overloaded to quickly. And in saying that, L and I left fully satisfied. We struggled to fit in a coffee after the tour so we could talk about how fantastic the day was.

The Short (TLDR version)
The Big Foody has amazing guides who we found to be very knowledgeable of all things involved with the tour, and very interesting and pleasant to talk with. The food you go to is incredible, and you will no doubt have your eyes opened to hidden gems that the city has to offer, along with the backgrounds and histories.

L had surprised me with something that simply could not be more perfect, with the tour not ending when we said goodbye, as we now have plans to visit the recommendations we have still not even been too. So well worth every cent spent!
Don’t listen to a Kevin or a Marco. If you love food, even if you live in Auckland and know good places, this is definitely for you! We will be back for another tour!

Perfect morning tour
We did the morning Queen Street food tour with Greg and it was beyond expectations. Not only did he take us to some amazing places, but he was able to share the history of the city and some fun facts about different locations. There is plenty of food to be had along the way. After the tour Greg gave some great recommendations for dinner and the go-to ice cream spot. We went to both and they were amazing. The tour was small (2 people) and they are really personal - highly recommend booking the tour if you’re in the area. Ask for Greg!!

Could Not Be Better

Our morning eating our way through Auckland with Elle was one of our favorite highlights during our visit to New Zealand. Every stop we made introduced us to a new side of Auckland's vibrant food scene and helped us to connect to the people and culture that makes the city so wonderful. Elle's passion for what she does was evident at every turn; she truly knows where to find delicious treats, and our walk took us to spots we would never have discovered on our own. We had the chance to try a little bit of everything from incredible coffee to perfectly crispy chicken wings to the most mouthwatering grilled cheese sandwich I have ever eaten, and every person we talked to was just as welcoming and gracious as Elle. By the time we said our goodbyes at the end of the tour it felt like we were saying goodbye to a longtime friend. If you are going to Auckland, book a tour (or two!) with The Big Foody- it's a great introduction to the city and a wonderful way to learn about New Zealand from terrific people over some seriously tasty food!

Best Foodie tour in Auckland!! Must do!
Sep 2018 • Friends
This tour was better than I expected. We were on holiday and decided to do this tour. I wished I had booked more tours with her during this entire trip. We got to taste coffee, chocolate, cheese and our tour guide was Elle. Elle was awesome!. You need to follow her on instagram: thebigfoody. If I go outside of the country I would book with her again. She gave us the taste and culture of New Zealand and I loved it. Elle informed us about culture, people, and the best places to eat and visit. Thank you Elle!

A big thank you to Colleen, our tour guide, who made this tour an absolute delight. From the great coffee at the start to the tour to the cheese and ice cream tasting at the end, this tour was full of delicious local food and a wonderful guide whose passion for and knowledge of local produce was extensive. We were given an amazing look into some of the best food Auckland has to offer and we enjoyed everything on offer. Our guide was friendly, fun and enthusiastic about food, and we enjoyed our time immensely eating, walking and chatting. Thank you Big Foidy Food Tours. We had a blast!

Great Introduction to NZ Cuisine
Mar 2018 • Solo
I took this tour on my first full day in New Zealand, and it was an awesome introduction to the country. We started at a small farmers market on the waterfront and made our way through the side streets and arcades off of Queen Street to find hidden treasures that I would have never found on my own. I was able to try a number of 'iconic' NZ foods, such as mussel fritters and manuka honey, as well as local cheeses and beers, and everything was delicious. Elle, our guide, was terrific and told us all about the changing Auckland scene, the people, the culture, and, of course, the best restaurants and bars to visit! She gave us enough recommendations of things to see and do (and eat!) to last a month. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Auckland!
