Once we exited the train station on our visit to Howth, we were looking for a sign to point us in the direction we should go. There was indeed a sign with a map and people were gathered around it. One of those people wore a bright yellow vest and a bucket/sun hat to shade his fair freckled complexion. People were asking him questions about which walking path to take and he was being friendly and handing out folded maps as he responded to the questions, we were listening but hadn't asked him anything directly yet. Eventually the crowd thinned and we began talking to John who explained he was actually a local tour guide, we had assumed he was posted there to provide information but began to realize that was not the case. John was waiting on a scheduled tour to arrive and he just talked to people because that's what he enjoys doing, plus it may lead to people joining in on his tour. We liked John right away (until he said it was a good thing the line was too long for me to kiss the Blarney stone on our bus tour the day before and so our feud began and his and my husband's camaraderie was born, lol...) so we waited with him and joined in with the other 3 people who had scheduled his tour (proof positive his strategy works lol). Throughout the walk, John spoke to each person we passed, usually asking where they were from and he kept up story after story and tale after tale of the sights along our walk. He talked of Howth and Ireland and his knowledge and pride in his heritage made the experience so much more than just the beauty of the sights - which alone the sights are well worth the trip to Howth but John adds just a bit more magic to it all. By the end we were all great friends and we shared a meal after our tour. John has a sincere and poetic nature about him that are both charming and even a little surprising - at times he feels like a surly Irishman with a quick wit and bits of sarcasm mixed in and other times he is lyrical with a flourish for revealing the best parts with perfect timing. We spent time with John outside of the Howth tour and truly enjoyed his company, knowledge, and banter. John guides with a mission to highlight a genuine Irish ambience and experience for those who follow him. Do not pass up on any opportunity to follow John the Man around Howth or Dublin or any part of Ireland for that matter - it completes the trip!

John was amazing! He is really knowledgeable about the town and his tour is not only informative but also extremely entertaining. It’s clear he’s really passionate about giving tours and really strives to make sure his group learns a lot and has a good time doing it. I’d come again- and recommend this tour to anyone!

A true autumn poetry tour overhanging « the velvet sand », the seals, embraced by the sea breeze.
John guided us through the face of Howth Cliffs, its shifting and sensitive nature, the expansion of our breath and mind rocked by dreamlike stories, a genuine and warm knowledge of Howth.
John knew how to make us vibrate at the same time as the agile bathers in their home of sweet and icy water.
A few hours of warm melody, of emotions captured thanks to John and his passion, the moment, the present in charge of the shadows of Irish sailors in search of peace.

Walk with a storyteller/historian guide. Close and easy access to Dublin, experience a small Irish fishing village and beautiful coastal walk. The guide, John, is entertaining and lends an authentic air of the Irish storyteller with location knowledge. Especially great if only visiting Dublin and not seeing the rest of the countryside.

The first thing I did on my trip to Ireland was this walking tour with John the Man. The first thing that blew me away was that he knew my name right of the bat and introduced himself. And somehow it only got better. Our weather was not fantastic. It was rainy, windy and misty but I didn’t care! John’s way of storytelling kept us tuned in even if the weather was kind of gross. He also was able to make a safety call that I would not have been able to make had I gone on this hike alone. He knew based off of the wind that it would be better for us to take a different route than the one planned to keep everyone safe. All around, a fantastic tour and a perfect way to kick off a trip. If you’re in Howth, book a tour with John the Man!

I am so grateful that I took the Howth walking tour with John. I was very lucky to sign up for this tour after a local recommended it. John met me at the train station and from the very start I was blown away by his tremendous knowledge and sense of humor. He had entertaining stories and insights for each and every step of the way. He also knew all the best places to stop for amazing photos. Needless to say, I have many friends and family who are now jealous of my trip thanks to John. Yes, Howth is beautiful and I'm sure you could find your own way up, but walking with John was like seeing Ireland through his eyes. He clearly loves what he does, and is very generous with his time. John added me on whatsapp and gave great tips on pubs in Dublin as well as day trips around the country. I can't wait till someone I know is going to Ireland, so I can send them to John. Well worth the money, and I guarantee that it will be a walk you'll never forget.

I an Dubliner ! During Covid had such a great day yesterday with John.... he related a compendium of information and knowledge of the bulbous island of Howth where he was born. His stories were great lots of valuable information and treats on the way ! I would really recommend this tour it’s comprehensive and one is on one of the most scenic spots of ireland, yet I was only half an hour away from the city of Dublin where I grew up ! This staycation is made special by giving oneself a day off on your own with John ! Do it ! You’ll be happy you did ..... Thank You John

With Dublin put into lockdown, our staycation was cancelled so I had to find something to do in Dublin in my free time. So glad I found John, he gave me a most enjoyable time exploring Howth, the beautiful cliffs and village, with plenty of charm, humour and interesting stories and history. I would recommend this to anyone considering what to do in Dublin during the pandemic - we kept our distance and it was all outdoors, so very safe. John was also professional in adhering to the guidelines. A great way of escaping all the chaos in the world right now! Go for it ...

A visit to Howth just North of the city of Dublin would not be complete without a walking tour of the area with the wonderful John O'Connor (aka John the Man) ,of Howth Walking Tours....it will be an experience to remember! Yesterday, with a group of like-minded 'curious' tourists of varying nationalities, we were taken on an unforgettable tour of Howth by John who is a native of Howth, an accredited tourist guide and member of the Approved Tourist Guides of Ireland. The walk around the hill of Howth affords panoramic views over Dublin Bay, Dublin city and all the way to Wicklow Head, south of Dublin. On your return to Howth village, you will be spoiled for the choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs where seafood is the speciality! The Hill of Howth was chosen by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William & Kate) for a 'photo-stop' on their recent visit to Dublin....what more can I say
