What to expect
Make your own way to Malahide Castle, easily accessible from central Dublin by car or bus in 30 minutes, between the hours of 9:30am and 5:30pm. On arrival, take a guided tour of the 12th-century fortress, which has been owned by the Talbot family for more than 800 years.  Delve into the opulent depths of the castle’s reception rooms and bedroom, many of which are filled with period furniture and portraits purchased form the National Gallery of Ireland. Hear tales of the Talbot family and of ghosts reputed to haunt the halls of the 800-year-old castle before heading outside to explore the castle’s sprawling grounds independently. In the botanical gardens, more than 5,000 species of plant from around the world bloom. Enrich your horticultural knowledge at interactive information panels and opt to purchase locally sourced produce from the on-site care and restaurant. Between two and four hours is a sufficient time to spend inside and around the castle.

Stop: 3 hours - Admission included
At the regal 12th century Malahide Castle and Gardens, you will experience pure escapism as you lose yourself in the rich heritage and natural beauty of your surroundings. The landmark and its grounds, combined history with modern conveniences create a magical, memorable visit. Enjoy a guided tour of one of Ireland’s oldest castles first built by Richard Talbot, a knight of King Henry II. The tour takes visitors through the interior of the castle’s main reception rooms and bedrooms with period furniture and portraits from the National Gallery of Ireland. Learn the fascinating story of the Talbot family who passed the castle from generation to generation over a period of 800 years up until 1975 and hear about some of its ghosts that still like to make an appearance from time to time! Stroll out to the wonderful ornamental Botanic Gardens, which date from 1872 and largely created by the last Lord Milo Talbot. With nearly 5,000 varieties of plants from around the world there’s plenty to see and read about in the garden interpretive area within the visitor centre. Within the restored courtyard is the visitor centre home to the world renowned Avoca Café & Retail. Enjoy a takeout lunch to the gardens from the foodhall or sit in the 170 seater café overlooking the beautiful views of the walled garden. Avoca provide a wide selection of dishes from locally sourced producers along with freshly baked cakes and scones. It’s definitely an experience not to be missed. The grounds also have a state of the art playground, picnic sites, cycling centre, cricket pitch, tennis courts and golf course. Just beyond the castle walls and within in a short 10 minute stroll you’ll discover the wonderful marina village of Malahide. Award winning bars, restaurants and boutiques line the picturesque streets enjoyed all year long by visitors and locals alike.

Excellent attraction near Dublin
Very enjoyable visit to Malahide castle. The Tablot family resided there from the 12th century to the 1970s. Aidan was an excellent tour guide and gave a lot of context to the castle & it’s contents.
Highly recommend a visit for a historical & political perspective of Ireland.

An impressive tour
Sep 2019
We went to Malahide Castle for a tour on the last day of our Irish holiday. I didn't realise that it went back so far - to the Normans and the first Talbot family. There were some very unique historical artifacts in the castle and the description of how the first inhabitants only lived in a single small room was fascinating.

I am a total sceptic when it comes to the supernatural, but while in the second hall (not the dark one) I was conscious of somebody tugging on my leather jacket. I looked around quickly but nobody was near me. I didn't say anything about it, but smiled at the fact that my imagination was making me think of ghosts, but my rational side kept it quiet.

Then in the final room, the guide started talking about the ghosts that people had been seeing. I'm still not convinced, but I have no explanation for what happened and I'm not going to offer one. I only told my wife about it a couple of weeks later.

Best castle tour ever!
May 2019
We wanted to visit here because we once lived in Malahide Township in Ontario given the same name as this castle and established by Thomas Talbot of the same family. The guided tour was very informative at a leisurely pace and provided some. Important history both of Ireland and Canada. It was easy to reach from Dublin by DART and it was one of the best days in Dublin.
