What to expect
  • Start your tour with hotel pickup in Muscat, and settle inside your air-conditioned vehicle with your guide. Then, explore the pristine streets of the city, beautifully set between the Al Hajar Mountains and Gulf of Oman. On route, learn how the city has successfully retained its rich Arabian heritage and culture, despite having undergone rapid development over the last few decades. Head first for Muscat’s undoubted showpiece: the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Opened in 2001, this stunning marble mosque is one of the largest in the Gulf, with room to accommodate 20,000 worshipers. After touring the glittering courtyards and prayer halls, continue to the Ministries quarter, home to many of Muscat’s foreign embassies and consulates. Admire the bougainvillea-laced avenues and immaculate white buildings with their Islamic arches and latticework, and then travel to Muttrah, the commercial heart of Muscat lining a spectacular, mountain-backed bay. Stroll through the seafront fish market where the locals trade their catches, and admire the sweeping Corniche, lined with latticed and balconied buildings. Then, delve into Muttrah Souk, a maze of covered alleys filled with stalls peddling spices, perfumes, coffee, antiques, and homewares. Breathe in the exotic aromas, and perhaps haggle for goods with tips from your guide. Having explored here, pay a visit to the Bait Al Zubair Museum, a charming museum that charts Oman’s fascinating past from ancient through to modern times. Learn about the country’s rich culture and early roots, and then continue deeper into old Muscat. Pose for photos outside the blue-and-gold Al Alam Palace, the official residence of Sultan Qaboos, and take pictures of Muscat’s twin Portuguese-built forts, Mirani and Jalali, perched on rocky outcrops above the bay. Your tour then finishes with a hotel drop-off.

Nice City Overview
I reccomend this rour, especially as your first arrive in Muscat but don't expect to use it as a means to shop at the souk. The tour stops and audio narrative an route are great for information and context of Oman. The fish market would be better as a snack stop at a local cafe or eliminated all together. The souk stop is really not long enough for anything more than some fotos.

Tips- be prepared for a long day since the tour time does not include trabsit to pick up all the people at various hotels. Bring water and snacks cause there are none provided. You can rent an abaya at the mosque as needed. The driver does not have them to provide

Nice and good overview over Muscat
Feb 2020
We were collected at the hotel and then the tour guided us through the most important sights in Muscat. We have seen the souk, the grand musk, the fishmarket, the guest palace and the museum for history and how people used to live in Oman.
Interesting and would sugest it to others.

Great tour
Jan 2020
The tour was very nice, full of interesting information concerning the arab country and manners. Good things were seen - the mosque, etc. but most attractive were the stories about the real life in Oman - how they live, what manners they have and so on

So disappointing
I took the tour on 14th of January. The weather was bad in the morning (raining a lot) and I understand that some roads were closed due to high political visit, but nevertheless..they should consider this things. Not only that I was picked up 1,5h later than agreed. Then we drove another 1,5h around to pick all the passengers. The bus was cold and super messy. If the heating was turned on all the windows became foggy from the condense and it was impossible to see outside. We missed opening time of the Grand Mosque so we just went in front of it for not more than 5min. We continued to the fish market but because the travel took so long (at that time was already 13-official ending timw!) I have to depart from the group and head by myself towards my hotel as I had flight at 17 from Muscat Airport and I still had to pick my luggage from the hotel.
So I didn't saw the Mosque from inside.. Nor the fish market, museum, royal palace or the souq.
Naseeb, the driver do whatever is possible, so I understand it's not his fault. Aly was nice but his English is not the best and we could get way more info on Muscat, Oman and Omani people.
One Italian group apparently booked an Italian speaking tour. Because not even audio guide worked they were just let to sit there and understand nothing. Not to mention, even if audio guide would work there would not be enough of headphones for all the people. They should cancel the trip if they knew it's such a chaos on the roads (one day prior another tour was canceled). And not that totally wasted our time. I tried to reach out to them afterwards. No response at all. Very disappointing. It was truly a disaster.

The tour company was honest and reliable even in an unexpected situation
Jan 2020
These days, it is quite difficult to find a good tour company as we are often flooded with their information. Not even those reviews are not always reliable. However, when something out of their playbook happens, that is often the time you can see how good/bad the company is. This time, Greyline did so well that I felt I should address it.

We decided to join the half-day tour while we are having an 8hr layover at Muscat airport. (Yes, you can do that. You only have to go Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC using taxi/shuttle bus.) The tragedy was, Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the sultan of Oman has passed away just before we have arrived, which put the city of Muscat in chaos. Jet aircrafts constantly flying in the air, military blocking the roads, long lines of vehicles... As soon as we figure out something is out of ordinary, we were in the tension as we are only staying in Oman for a short layover. We realized that we may risk missing our flight going to the next destination.

Although, at this point, we were still eagerly wanted to see the city of Oman. So, we asked our tour guide, Naseeb, what he thinks. Though he could have pushed us for the tour for easy cash, but instead, he gently told us, "though we wholeheartedly want you to see the city of ours, we cannot risk you missing a flight; it is better if we bring you back to the airport," and you have no idea how relieved we were when we hear that. After all, there were too many unknown factors which could lead to trouble after we arrived in the city. We agreed with Naseeb and arrived at the airport where he apologizing for the trouble though it was entirely not his fault; it was just bad timing. Afterward, the tour agents agreed with a refund and the process went smoothly.

We were happy that not only we did not miss the flight, but we had service from this company where they can make the correct judgment. It is shame that we were not able to actually the city, but perhaps I can come back again sometime later for that. Needless to be said, I surely will ask Greyline for the tour in such a case.

Lastly, my deepest condolences to the loss of their majesty. Hoping the people of Oman overcome this challenging time with the blessing of God.

Good tour let down by poor timing
Dec 2019
The tour was worth 4 stars but the pick up timing makes it hard to give it that overall rating. We were on a cruise and didn't have wifi the day before the tour so I contacted Grayline two days before who said the pick up would be between 8-8:30. We were at the pick up point by 8 but did find out once there that the pick up time emailed to us the day before was 8:30. In fact, the bus didn't come til 9:10, so we'd been waiting over an hour. To add to the frustration, on calling the local Grayline office we were told the bus was there already, which it wasn't. Grayline must have known that the port was the last pick up and that 8:30 was an unrealistic time to tell us. This is a fixable problem and taxi drivers at the port gate told us it was a very common issue with Grayline.
A further issue with the timing is that the guide rushed us through the mosque, losing much of the group, so those of us who'd kept up had a long wait at the bus for the others.
Now for the positives, if Grayline can sort out the pick up timing, this is a good value alternative to a ship's own shore excursions. It covered the main highlights of Muscat, which is a lovely city, and we were very impressed by the mosque. We also liked that the guide showed us his pre-prayer washing ritual. Although we expected an audio tour, in fact we had a proper guide, perhaps due to numbers as it was a fairly full larger bus. The guide was informative and both he the driver were very friendly. Overall 3.5 stars really.
