Overview
Most visitors to Northern Norway don't get an authentic taste of Sámi culture, but you will on this tour from Tromso that's led by a Sámi reindeer-herder guide. You are introduced to animals, invited into a lavvu (like a tipi), and told stories about the culture of the Sámi, the indigenous people of Northern Europe. Enjoy sledding through the pristine Arctic wilderness, spot the northern lights, and savor a delicious meal inside the lavvu.

Highlights
- This tour from Tromso is led by a Sámi reindeer-herder
- Your guide introduces you to Sámi culture
- A home-cooked meal and hot drinks are included
- Convenient round-trip transportation from Tromso
What to Expect
Your tour begins with a pickup from Tromso city center. Meet your guide and settle into the vehicle for the journey out of the city.
Upon arrival at the destination, don your provided thermal suit and jump aboard a sled for an adventure through the snow. Afterward, spend some time getting to know the reindeer. Under careful supervision from your reindeer-herder guide, you may pet and feed the animals.
Next, enter a lavvu, a temporary dwelling used by the Sámi people, and warm up with a traditional stew and hot drinks. Listen as your guide tells you stories about the Sámi, the indigenous people of Northern Europe. Afterward, head outside to (hopefully) spot the northern lights.
Relax on your journey back to Tromso, where your tour concludes with drop-off back at the original departure point.

Reading other reviews, I’m not sure if we just went on an off night or what, but our experience was extremely disappointing. We were picked up by a bus at a hotel in Tromso, which was 30 minutes late. We get it, things happen, but after that the entire night felt rushed. When we…

Response from LeneS977, General Manager at Northern Lights and Reindeer Sledding in Tromso
Responded 22 Jul 2020
Dear Marina, we are truly sorry that our tour did not meet your expectations. We are a small family business who relies on a supplier for transport, who again is depended on road conditions, which can change very suddenly here in the Arctic. That the tour felt rushed after the initial delay is something we will work on - thank you for bringing this to our notice. Reindeer sledding is a slow and relaxed activity, as it says in our tour-description - huskies are the ones that run fast. If we would force our reindeer to run while pulling sledges, they would indeed be unhappy. Maybe I did not make myself clear enough about my feelings towards my culture and it was misunderstood somehow. Naturally I do not feel guilty for participating in my own culture, but I do feel guilty for not learning it properly, in this case the technique of joiking, since my grandmother was Christened in the early 1900's and was taught that joyking was "wrong" and never allowed us to learn it either. A lot has been lost in the centuries of colonization of Sápmi, and it is the task of us, the young generation, to rebuild and revive our culture, language and traditions. Projects like Tromsø Lapland give us an important platform for doing so, by working with, reflecting about and sharing our culture. If you ever visit Tromsø again, we are happy to give you a free tour and hopefully a better experience.

This was a great evening’s entertainment. My son loved feed the reindeer whilst the adults in our party were fascinated by the talk about Sami culture delivered by our friendly, engaging host. Good coffee, delicious food. Highly recommended.
