- NishRau00Sami culture , Reindeer feeding and sleigh rideA beautiful and heart warming experience. It was a memorable experience to interact and feed the reindeer and the sleigh ride was fun. Our hosts were kind and generous with their time and knowledge of the Sami people and their way of life, the meal prepared was tasty and vegetarians were catered for as well.
- R1867KXpeggyh00+1The Sami Culture Intro was very authentic and interesting. Jork and Storytelling was amazing . thanks a lot❤️
- Navigator52437400Unbelievably amazingYou will never regret, this team are so super professional everything was more than our expectations we haven't tried sledding but we could feed the reindeers as much as we wanted. Thanks Katy and Meyer for all your help and flexibility. Don't miss this opportunity it is as amazing as northern light.
- 839evans00Great experience! This was a true highlight for our trip. A great experience for little kids. Grandma was completely blown away by the sights and the great stories. The reindeer are a little assertive, but it always felt safe even with the two year old.
- BostonBostonGirl00Great experience- some suggestionsAbout 45 minutes from tromso, we got there at sunset. The Sami woman that greeted us was so informative as to her culture. She answered so many questions, was completely open, told us folklore and traditions, and made the evening both enjoyable, and informative. It was lovely and picturesque to be able to see the reindeers at sunset. I wish the reindeer ride could have been longer and also would suggest that there be some alternatives to reindeer stew. Although it was nice to try, I feel like many of us would have liked to have some alternate options after the taste! Another suggestion would be to have some of their staff available to take photos. It was so picturesque and I think many of us would’ve appreciated having some of their staff there to take pictures . An added bonus was the northern lights that evening.
- Curious1885913529400Unforgettable experienceWe had a wonderful time interacting with the reindeer and learning about the Sami people and their culture. It was a short distance from the city and made for a very pleasant evening! Very memorable experience
- teebiv00Fantastic experienceJust book it already! My husband and I had an amazing time with the reindeer and learning about the Sami reindeer herding history - it was a highlight of our time in tromso. Highly recommend it!
- Chr1s202200Great experience and a fun activityIts a great family activity, we had an amazing time and Angelica was so great. Would recommend 10/10 just make sure to wear layers because it can get cold 🥶
- kalyani6000Reindeer sledge and Sami tribes in TromsoIt was so thrilling to visit the Sami tribe and ride on a reindeer sledge in Tromso last week. We were given a small bucket with the feed for the reindeer and they were hungry and in a hurry to snatch it from my hands. It was indeed a lifetime experience to sit on the sledge and drive around. There was snow all around and it was beautiful to go around the route. The Sami girl gave us some tea and gave a lecture about their life. I felt it was in a fairly land and could not believe that I was actually talking to the deer and the Sami girl. It was indeed a great experience.
- khvosburg00Wonderful, dignified, fun afternoon with Samis and their reindeer herdI went on the event "From Tromsø: Reindeer Ranch and Sami Culture Tour." It was a wonderful afternoon! When I went, the Samis hosting us were cousins who were working together, with one showing us his herd and the other explaining Sami culture and history. Feeding the reindeer was so interesting because I got to see how they act as a herd, how close to wild they are (even though in a "domesticated" herd, and see the animals up close. The presentation about Sami culture, history (including political struggles and the current impact of climate change), and singing was incredible. The man was not a scripted speaker--he shared with us from his real life. He said he shared as he did because he wants more people to know about the Sami--to know the beauty and dignity of their people and also to counteract harmful stereotypes. The Sami singing (joiking) was so well explained and beautiful to hear! The reindeer stew was tasty. The Sami cousins hosting the event were dignified hosts who gave us the honor of seeing a little bit of their lives. I don't know how often the Sami hosts change, but the ones from Feb 22, 2023 were incredible. The tour company that drove us to and from did a good job of getting us there in a timely, comfortable, safe way. (Safe doesn't feel like something I take for granted traveling north of the Arctic Circle.) My recommendation is to do a little research on Sami culture and reindeer so you can ask deeper questions. Both cousins were happy to share as I asked questions based on what I'd already learned.
- Emma W00The most perfect eveningOur group of 8 (including 2 children) did this last night. We loved it and would highly recommend! Although we didn’t see the lights (we didn’t expect to and had already seen them earlier in the week thankfully), the whole evening was magical - from our wonderful 3 course meal in the Sami tent, the feeding of the beautiful reindeer, the sleigh ride, the Sami culture telling…. Thank you so, so much!
- Clareme900Enjoyable experienceEnjoyed an interesting and friendly experience from the Sami people. Reindeer are mostly gentle and enjoy being fed. Food and hot drinks all good.
- leaalas00Great experience, I highly recommand it for anyone who loves animalsI went there with my mom and we spent a really great time there. People are really kind and pay attention to all the details, you can have hot drinks if needed, if you are cold you can spend time near the fire. And the most special time was with reindeers: it was wonderful! You can get very close to them they are cute and kind animals. We did enjoy a lot, thank you!
- Anaco_Angler00Blown Away, AlmostTromsø was experiencing uncharacteristically wet and windy weather the day of our tour, so we knew ahead of time that there would be no reindeer sleigh ride. There was no snow, only wet ground. The wind was so strong on the plateau where the Sami camp is located and it was very difficult to walk. Even the reindeer hunkered down away from where we were supposed to interact with them, sheltering from the wind under trees. Eventually they were coaxed to come to where we could feed them, and that was entertaining. You learned quickly to stay clear of their antlers. Once the feeding was ended we went into a big hut, a lavvu, for reindeer stew (or a vegetarian option), hot drinks, and cookies. The vegetarian stew was very tasty. After our lunch one of the Sami tribe members gave an excellent presentation on the Sami lifestyle, culture, and their challenges within Norwegian society. When we first arrived we felt the tour should have been canceled because of the wind. We still fell that way but we did appreciate the insight into the Sami people.

This must be one of the very popular day tours that tourist liked to join. 2 big buses full of tourist are going to feed the reindeer at the same time, what a chaos. If fun to feed the reindeer, take the sledge ride and listen to the Sami story.
Perhaps the organiser can improve this tour by providing more details while we are inside the bus on the way to the farm. Many tour guides looks new to the job and all arrangement went loose without proper guidance while in the farm with reindeer.

We went to Tromsø to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. I booked this tour for us (2 adults and our 4 year old) this was one of the best tours we have been on ever! We loved our sledding trip and feeding the reindeer. The culture part was exceptional. I only had wished we could have had the culture part first so we could have more time to ask questions. We had to go straight back to the bus after the culture part. The Sami woman who spoke during our culture session was so passionate and amazing. It brought tears to my eyes and I only wish I could have expressed our gratitude to her for sharing with us. Our four year old loved every minute of it! She was learning about the Sami culture in nursery school and all the Sami were so kind to take pictures with her so that we could bring them back to her friends and teachers at nursery. I cannot recommend this tour more!

I booked this trip last minute and I was so glad I did. The reindeer camp and the Sami people were wonderful. Their stories and songs were charming, the reindeer stew was good and feeding the hungry reindeer was exciting. I took the short sleigh ride which was more than enough. Be sure to dress warm and do not miss this excursion.

Thank you for your review and for visiting us.
We are happy that you have had a fascinating experience at our camp! Special thank you for your mention about our meals.
No worries about being cold - we offer blankets and warm jackets for everyone. In case you get super cold, you can stay in lavvu and warm up by the fire, while enjoying some cookies and hot beverages.
Hope to see you again!

Most underwhelming part of my Tromsø trip. I am unsure how it has such a good review on trip advisor, makes me wonder if I can trust it anymore.
Did not feel authentic at all, it felt like a tourist trap, pack people in to make profit, was not personal and members of staff were not friendly. Not worth the time or the money. Spend your money elsewhere.
The meal was like a school dinner. The smoked salmon roll tasted like it was frozen, plus it could have been suitable for vegetarians since there was hardly any salmon. There was no dressing or seasoning on the salad. The bidos was okay but it was just a stew. The cake was dry, and not worth the calories.
Feeding the reindeer was probably best part of it, however I could probably do something similar at a local farm for free.
The sledding was far from thrilling. It was pathetic. I could walk faster since we were being led by a gentleman walking the reindeer. I would expect that it could be suitable for small children, but even a child would probably get bored.
There was one sami guide, who was 23 years old. The talk was short and there was no time for questions. It would have been nice if this was at the beginning and there was actually a chance to ask questions and maybe meet more of the family.. Why is he on his own?
Overall, the set up was too touristy and did not feel authentic. Apart from the sami guy and one lady on the coach, the members of staff were cold and it felt like they did not want to be there.
The coach was packed with guests and for the amount of money spent, I feel like the trip could have been a lot better. I feel ripped off.
Go out for a nice meal instead!

Sorry to hear that you feel this was not a good experience. As you mentioned we mostly get 5 star reviews so most of the time we do get it right but in your case it appears we did not manage to meet your expectations.
I will try to respond to your main points of complaint. The reindeers go as fast or as slow as they feel. We do of course always have a guide with the sleigh ride and this is for your safety.
The food we serve is traditional sami stew called bidus. This is served at all Sami weddings and celebrations. We cook it over the open fire so the smoky flavours combine with the reindeer meat and vegetables. This is the Sami national dish and it is important that we share this with you.
The sami culture normally lasts around 45 minutes but if you felt this was too short then we take this comment on board but we also have to find the balance between the reindeer feeding, sled ride activity and the culture. Depending of the day or evening you visit the number of sami reinder herders varies. I hope you understand that not all the sami reindeer herders can be there every day and evening.
We do take your points very seriously and we will continue to do all we can to make sure all guests have a 5 star experience. We would also like to offer you a full refund. We don't ever want anyone to feel like they have been ripped off. Our intention is that guests leave with a memorable experience and a better understanding of sami culture. Please send me an email at info@tromsoarcticreindeer.com and we will give you a full refund.

Amazing opportunity to meet the Sami reindeer herders and learn about their lifestyles. Feeding the reindeer was a lot of fun, and we later learned they are in fact wild reindeer. The Sami move them from the mountains to the camp during the winter to help them survive harsh weather conditions. Definitely worth the cost of the tour, knowing you are supporting the wildlife and the Sami herders. Unfortunately it was raining during the tour and the sledding portion was cancelled due to ice conditions, but I got refunded for that.

Thank you for taking your time to write a review for us. We truly appreciate it.
We are extremely happy you have learned new things for yourself during your visit to our camp. It is important for us that you get an insight into Sami culture and understand more about the Northern lifestyle.
We are sorry to hear that there were unpleasant weather conditions during your visit to the Tromso Arctic Reindeer camp. But however, we do always offer refund or a change to other day, if the safety risks due to ice/snow prevent us from arranging an activity.
Thank you for visiting us and your contribution to the Nordic wildlife - we are sure that the reindeers are very thankful too. Hopefully you will visit us again, and that time the weather will be perfect! You are warmly welcome!

We had a fantastic morning tour with Tromso Arctic Reindeer!
I would highly recommend this tour to everyone. From our own experience it is better to go at 10 am - you will have perfect light for pictures, it will be not that cold like in the evening plus on the way back you can stop at the Arctic Cathedral and go on top of the mountain by cable car for a nice view of Tromso.
We took the package with the short sledding. It was 10-15 minutes and it was more than enough for a nice experience. The reindeer are beautiful and very friendly. All day with them passed so quick! In the same time there was time for everything: feeding, sledding, pictures, lunch and stories from the Sami people. People who live and work there are very warm, friendly and welcoming. It is an amazing unusual experience when all the people are seating around the fireplace and listening about the culture, traditions and life stories of the Sami people. This trip will stay in our memory forever.

Very nice half day tour from Tromsø. Buses depart from Radisson Hotel at 9 am. They take you around 25 minutes to the Sami camp where you can enjoy a very nice morning feeding reindeers, learning about Sami culture and reindeer sledding. Plus hot chocolate, coffee, te and reindeer stew (there is also a vegetarian options). The Sami guide was really nice, she gives you a very interesting talk about Sami culture around a fire in a tent. She also sings and yoiks wonderfully. The reindeers are beautiful. There are so many of them, you can feed them and sled around the camp. There are quite a lot tourists but it wasn't really a problem. Totally worth it.

The Sami people I met at the ranch were all very kind and the young girl talking to us in the big tent was a great storyteller
Our reindeer stew was absolutely delicious and you also got free cookies, don't worry they also offer a veggie option.
The actual reindeer themselves were alright to see, I'm definitely glad I went but wouldn't go again. I'd say this trip could be missed if you don't have enough time but it is nice to get to know more about the Sami culture.
Reindeers are like all my deer experience, just like in Nara Japan, this time I was told they were friendly.
They are to a degree but they are also very pushy for food, if you have food you will fight them. They will push you with their head/horns. It won't hurt but it's not a pleasant experience. So after 2 buckets I got tired of it and just focused on taking pictures
Keep an eye out for the reindeer not wanting to be fed towards the back, sometimes they fights with their horns and this is beautiful to see, much better than being harassed for food.
The ride around is pleasant but like other people have mentioned 10 minutes (the short one) is enough so I'm glad I picked this.
It's slow and steady but worth it for the experience of doing it and a guide will offer to take your picture before you get out which is nice!
The Sami shop is filled with souvenirs from the Sami people, you can also get these in Tomso but I think perhaps they're actually at a slightly better price here, especially the knives which you can take in a checked in bag.
So if you want to get one, get it here.

I spent my birthday here, and it was brilliant. A little disappointing that there was no snow for sledding, but no-one can control the weather! After a short bus ride, you arrive at the camp and are immediately introduced to the herd. You're given a safety briefing and a bucket of pellets and off you go! Before you know it, you are surrounded by these beautiful animals, some happy to eat from your bucket, some content to just meandre amongst you. There are some serious sized antlers to watch out for! There are Sami reindeer herders around who you can ask questions to, and an endless supply of hot chocolate and biscuits if you get cold. At lunch, everyone goes into one of the lavvos and you are served either reindeer stew or a vegetarian option, and here you are told all about the Sami culture, how things were, how things are, the practicalities of herding reindeer as well as the traditions and beliefs. Hand made artifacts are passed around to look at, stories are told, and a jolk is sang at the end, which is lead by a young Sami herder. A very interesting experience, I could have asked questions all day.

It was amazing to feed the reindeers. That night we couldn't see the northern lights but we had a really great dinner and an interesting speech about Sami Culture. The Reindeer Sledding Tour may be too short. But it was a great experience.

Hello. Normally, they arrange the meeting place at Tromso city centre, specifically at Radisson Blue. So you can definitely book with them but you’ll probably have to go to city Center to meet with the group.

Hi, we are a family of 4adults & 1 toddler (2 years) looking to visit Tromso and participate in early Oct 2022. However, reservation seemed to be applicable only from Nov? Does that mean there’s no winter activity in Oct available for booking?

Try contacting the local tourist office. We found them very helpful

Hi there,
We have two kids on this trip, older one is 4y and the youngest is 1y.
Are they allowed on sledge?
Thanks for your reply

Hi,
Does anyone know of any Sami/reindeer experiences in September? Everything I’m seeing is crossed out for the fall.
Thanks!

Hi, i already booked for tommorow.. i join with afternoon tour - start 1 pm.. but on the section "before you go" it says pick up on 10am at Radisson Blu?
Hi, may I know if I select for the tour which start at 1pm, about what time will end for the tour? As we may need to plan for the night about 5pm.
Thank you.

How long is the reindeer sleigh ride?

It's an evening event. Pickup about 4 pm, drop off back at hotel at about 9-10 pm. I thought the night ride and dinner was cool, but definitely a different experience than during the day.
