About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- NYC_D120 contributionsAvoid city sightseeing hop on hop offI am really unhappy with the tickets we purchased from the cruise terminal in Malta. We felt both lied to and deceived. We were told by the saleswoman in the terminal that the buses run all day and that we could easily take the yellow line to see the Mdina and the red line to see the blue grotto, all in this would be 3 hours. When we got on the bus we were held there for at least 20 minutes as the salesman wouldn't let the bus leave as it was easy to see he was receiving commission for every ticket sold. This was particularly clear when he got mad and started yelling at patrons bc the walked of the bus due to it being overcrowded. Sadly we found out too late as we were lucky enough to catch the 4ish pm yellow bus at Mdina. Little did we know this was the last bus and we would have been stranded had we missed this bus. It was on this bus that we inquired about catching the red line at the port, only to be told the buses are done for the day and 4pm is the last bus. How deceiving are the sales people who lie and omit important information just to make a sale. Ive been on hop on hop off in Barcelona, Madrid, London and Rome, these buses ran well into the evening giving you options to see many different sights. I would never advise anyone to use this service in Malta, hour a personal taxi for the same price for a family of 4 and you will get to see the sights that you are interested in....Written 28 August 2024
- F1626GPlisal0 contributionsDo not use Hop on Hop Off - Never Again! An absolute nightmare. The staff are very unhelpful. Where we pick up the bus, Malta Sightseeing also have a stop and rep there. When we got there we asked if this was the correct place which is was. The City Sightseeing Rep left his post to get food and drinks for himself and the Malta Sightseeing Rep at which point a bus turned up. We went to get on and the Malta Sightseeing Rep said is was not ours. Turns out it was! When the next bus came we were told our tickets were not valid but were for the other bus we were told was not ours. The City Sightseeing Rep came back he said that the bus had been and gone. We explained that we were told but the other rep it was not for us and he just shrugged his shoulders. Basically couldn't care less. We killed some time and got the later one but lost a lot of time out of our day. This was for the South route and we went to Marsalokk (lovely place). The following day (we had a 3-day pass purchased before we went through "I See Malta") we went to get the North route bus as we wanted to go to the Aviation Museum and Aquarium. The bus did not stop for the Aviation Museum so when we arrived at Ta'Qali Crafts Village, I asked the driver and he said the road was closed so could not get down there. No one advised us of this. Again, the Rep at our stop did not mention anything. We stayed on for the Aquarium but were told to get off at Mdina and wait for another bus as he was changing to the Yellow Route (whatever that was!). No advice given on how long to wait for the next bus. No safe place to wait. We ended up paying 20 Euro to get a taxi to the Aquarium. Aquarium great. Due to the issues with the buses, after the Aquarium, we got a taxi back to our hotel with then cost 35 Euro. So 55 Euro out of pocket plus tips. Advise to use Public Transport (bus service is good) and/or download Bolt/Uber apps. Normal taxis are very expensive. Stay away from Hop on, Hop off as the staff really do not care and have a bad attitude.Written 26 August 2024
- gigi1012040 contributionsPoor quality audio commentaryPoor commentary, no guidance or interaction as no staff. Driver was good a driving. I have used this company in many other cities around Europe and this is by far the worstWritten 24 August 2024
- Madratlady0 contributionsChoose your stops carefully or use public transport.Looking at other reviews, I would say that we had a relatively positive experience compared to some! The drivers are skilled at getting the buses round very tight corners and narrow streets and yes, they do drive quickly at times, so hang on! They do their best to keep to schedule, but this can be impossible at times due to traffic and bad parking. The problem is that 45 mins is not enough time to spend at many of the stops, but if you stay for an hour and a half you really limit the number of stops you can make to ensure you get the last bus to the ferry. The other issue is that there are no real queuing systems at the busier stops (Yes, I’m British and we’re obsessed with queuing!). This means that everyone tends to rush at the bus when it arrives, clamouring to get on first. We were given headphones, but they didn’t seem to work. Not the biggest issue for us, but could be for some. Anyway, we found one of the drivers very entertaining with his ‘commentary’ on the atrocious traffic in Victoria. Was it worth €20 each? Not really. I should’ve done more research of the places I needed to visit and used public transport instead.Written 14 August 2024
- AntPiercey0 contributionsAvoid. Poor communication, didn't provide full service listed and returned to Valetta after Mdina without explanation.Paid for a North travel tour for two - 60 Euros. No info as to when the busses run from any stops - no timetables apart from when the first one goes from its first stop miles away from anyone in a main city. Get onto a bus eventually and get to a terminus of sorts. Only through other people asking did we find out that we were on the South bus, no one from the bus driver or any representative told us anything until other people started asking questions as to which bus to use etc. If we hadn't done anything we would have been on there wrong bus altogether. We eventually found the right bus for the North journey (a one way trip around the northern section, note one way for later). We travelled along listening to the info about sights we could see, although we were either on the wrong road, at the wrong place or that the info is out of date as new buildings looked to have been built in front of the older views that the audio was describing, so pointless. Got to Mdina where we stopped to look about, told to be back for the next bus in an hour to carry on the journey. So off we got, looked about and returned in an hour. A bus turns up around the right time, so we get to the driver who was dealing with many people all trying to get on to ask is this the right bus for Blue North (the ticket we had bought) to which he hastily said yeah yeah just get on... he was a tad flustered with people trying to get on. We travel a fair distance to when I notice us heading back to Valetta. Now this is a one way journey around Malta. No where does it state about a return from Mdina. However once the bus finally stops in the centre of Valetta I was told that it was the Yellow line (which according to their website doesnt even go to Mdina). This was now 4 or so hours into the day and we are back at Valetta having seen Mdina and nothing else. I could get back on another bus but id have to wait 45 mins, then travel the 90 mins or so to Mina to carry on the rest of my journey meaning without getting off we would be getting back home by 7pm. This means no getting off so the point of a hop on/off bus is null & void. All staff members at the Valetta terminus couldn't care less about the situation, and the driver flat out refused t take any issue with the fact he told us wrong info. Complaining to the company comes back with you used the ticket so were not compensating you even though we didn't give the full service. Avoid at all costs. Poor service, Poor instructions, confusing set up and terrible audio guides mean you would be better off getting a different company or just a local bus around the locations (2.50 Euro for two hours travel opposed to 30 euro for this lot).Written 1 August 2024
- 842vihaanp0 contributionsStop ScheduleIt was pretty good. Sadly the exact time schedule is only available once you purchase the tickets, so we had to go to Sliema.Written 30 July 2024
- E5953SZkevinh0 contributionsTourist Trap 101When we arrived at the harbor of Gozo we were met by a very passive aggressive woman who sold us tickets to the hop on hop off bus. She was very persistent but it worked, at least it sounded good. After having bought 2 tickets her colleagues followed us and tried to sell us the same tickets, we even told them that we already bought tickets. The bus ride offered great views but both drivers we rode with should not be allowed to drive, it was a reckless and bumpy ride. There was an audio tour guide that we got headphones to listen to, worthless. Either the mumbling voice were not in sync with the bus driver or it was just incoherent info, also the “facts” about the “worlds biggest dome” and the “worlds first temples” are just ridiculous when you know the real facts. Their tactic was to stop under the sun for 5-15 minutes and try to force you to buy water. It was overall horrible from start to finish, take an Uber/Bolt or take the local bus instead.Written 21 July 2024
- teresasewell0 contributionsHop on hop off bus GozoHad a lovely time on the red hop on hop off bus in Gozo. Great way to see the island . The driver managed to negotiate some very tight turns and small streets very well . We got off at Victoria had a little look round all the little shops and streets. Popped in a little cafe and had a drink . The commentary was very informative and is a great way to see the island and learn a bit about its history . Bus came on time would recommend this tourWritten 12 July 2024
- colinsK4658BT0 contributionsTerrible service and structureTerrible organisation, no staff at key points and if you believe that they run buses every 30 minutes then you will also believe in the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny. I strongly recommend going with the local Malta Sightseeing company as they had many more buses and staff while we were fighting to get on this bus. Very disappointing.Written 4 July 2024
- Angiir0 contributionsThese buses need a damn good scrub & a vat of disinfectant- but the driver was lovely.Well it’s one way to see the island fully doing both routes BUT - no aircon downstairs - it was SO hot - & I think the bus 2as last cleaned in the 1990’s 😳 I still haven’t been able to scrub the dirt marks out of my clothes. To say it was grime-laden does not do it justice - blechhhh. The driver was a sweetheart though & regardless of the schmootz, we saw a lot.Written 29 June 2024
- jonnyboy670 contributionsNot great at allNot a great deal to see and do on Gozo and with our timetable only 3 stops allowed as you need to be back on the boat for 4pm, some is quite boring and no really a scenic place to visit, the promise of nice comfortable seats on the boat..well there were no seats left for the return journey as it was packed, not ideal. The bus at Malta taking us back to the hotel took ages, overcrowded and the roads are very busy. I’d take a bolt taxi around town if I was to do it againWritten 25 June 2024
- susanfC2259BF0 contributionsDisappointedLong waits between buses, not many places to hop off, missed a lot of what we were seeing because the narration was either nonexistent or difficult to understand.Written 24 June 2024
- LydiaJ1080 contributionsGreat transport option with a tour included! We used the bus after getting the highspeed ferry from Valletta to Gozo. It provided the perfect solution to getting a group of 6 around the island without costing too much. The rep gave us the group discount, meaning we paid 15 euros each instead of 20 euros. We got the opportunity to have separate tickets so we were not required to do exactly the same if we didn't want to. The bus gave use the change to see everything we wanted all over the island.Written 15 June 2024
- 2468Aussie0 contributionswould not recommendthis was so boring, over crowded, too long and very little commentary. the traffic is bad and the roads do not accommodation buses so lots of waiting and turning Theres not a lot to see - its all more of the same and not interesting at all.Written 14 June 2024
- W5021EUjesss0 contributionsBus 1 drove past me, bus 2 was incredibly lateI got off at stop number 5 to see the market which was pleasant, and then waited for the bus after 45 minutes as suggested (the market took 20 minutes tops so not much to see), and the bus drove past me, I stuck my hand out in case and the driver looked straight at me as he drove past, meaning I would have had to wait another 45 minutes. I decided to spend more money getting a taxi to catch up with the bus, at which point that bus was 35 minutes late, I had to be somewhere so got another taxi and decided to not continue with the hop on hop off as it was proving too stressful. The person i was with rang to see where the bus was and they said it was stuck in traffic but the other bus company was right on time. I also saw no traffic when I was in the taxi. Complete waste of money for the 20 euros for one 15 minute bus journey to a small market, and as a solo female traveller, tiring and upsetting. AwfulWritten 14 June 2024

All the Excursion companies in Qawra and Bugibba recommend City Sightseeing and I see malta pass so first rang @Tui and asked if we get the tour can we get on any bus, they responded yes any bus
OK So we went for a 4 day pass, this allows any bus or water route hop on hop off along with entrance to 31 attractions
So day one went off to a good start, the bus turned up , we found the bus only goes one way round the route and are an hour apart. But that shouldn’t be a problem
We had set our plans to go to Valletta, spend the day viewing the many sites there. We set off from Qawra and settled in for the tour, well sporadic out of time commentary started quite well. But as we went towards Valetta more and more of the descriptions were out of sync and sites were not visible
So Valetta main entrance stop, not what you expect so we missed it and got off at the next stop, only to find most places that your ticket gets you into are still closed or on a rota of days open and our luck shot out here as most were closed on the Monday we got there.
Day two we had planned on going to GOZO and catch the first ferry at 10:40 , the ferry went straight past and did not stop, there was no representative from the company on the pier, we was also sat in 30 degrees so after phoning the company and being told it was 15 minutes away, this happened twice
at 11:25 we went to the nearest trip office that is an official I see Malta shop he said it would be 15 minutes, We had a coffee and waited at 11:50 we had wasted nearly half the day so we decided to get a bus to Valetta to try and see some more of the sites, as the bus departed we saw the ferry coming round the corner but the day had been wasted. Apparently, the ferry was full so had to drop off and come back as they didn’t put a second ferry on and we caught a normal bus back that was quicker and only 2 Euros each
We planned to go to Rabbat so got the first bus which was at 8:15 outside our hotel. So at 8:35 again had to ring and find where the first bus was as the start of the route is only 15 minutes away, it turned up at 9 am. Stopping at the shopping village on the way to Rabbat seemed pointless as it was closed, again most of the attractions were closed but Mdina is well worth a visit
Day 3 we planned to get to Silema and catch the ferry to Gozo, We found out there that is what everybody planned, off we went to Gozo , on arriving we approach the hop on hop off bus
We were then told we had category 2 tickets and needed category 3 tickets to get the tour.
Scam is what it is, why sell and all-inclusive 4 day pass that is not all inclusive, day 3 wasted
Day 4 we went back to Valetta and managed to see more sites
All in Get a normal bus for 2 euros each and save money save time and enjoy a non-frustrating day ,I See Malta is a serious waste of money !!

We have used City Sightseeing buses all over Europe and enjoyed every one. It was a good job this wasn't our first experience of them as we would never contemplate using them again. That would be a shame if all the other cities then lost business through no fault of their own. We can endorse all those comments and reviews in the poor and terrible sections. In our opinion we feel that they are correct. We chose to take them with that famous pinch of salt. Big mistake. Thank goodness we had a bright sunny day and got seats on the top deck. If you are there from say 10.00 till 5.00 you can't possibly do the two routes with confidence, especially if you dared to hop off and then wait an hour in the hope that there would be room for you to get back on. We enjoyed the occasional scenic views. Most of the journey took place in the middle of nowhere though. The so-called commentary, what bit there was, rarely mentioned the name of the village you were passing by (not through). The bottom line is there was very little for them to comment on for much of the time. The fresh air and sunshine were the highlights.

Get on bus. Bus breaks down and we’re left for an hour at the ferry port with no effort to replace it. The people who had been on the broken down bus then ended up at the back of the queue to get on the next bus. The staff were totally disorganised and uninterested in the passengers. Nobody was given any headphones so we had to endure the whole trip in silence with no commentary. Was then dumped back at the ferry port as I was told Sliema where I was picked up wasn’t part of the route and I’d have to wait another hour for a bus back. I gave up and took a local bus from Valletta. Tours are supposed to be fun and informative not an endurance test. I couldn’t wait for this one to be over. Do yourself a favour and buy a Tallinnja 7 day pass for the local buses at the same price. They go to all of the tourist attractions at your leisure.POOR!!!!

The hop-on/hop off bus has several different services, all run by different companies. Which means if your going to catch it back, you'll have to note which one it is. This review is for the T1 North (Red Bus)
It was €15 euros for over three hours, something I never realised at the time. You get given a map of the route, and earphones, which you plug in to the bus p.a; that has several languages.
The information is useful to note down, for places to visit later; such as where the night life is (Bugibba & Paceville), or a particular historical site; such as (Petite Versaille / Palazio Parisio.
You get to find out about Malta's salt producing history, wine making, the defence of the island.

Having done several city sightseeing tours in other cities before, we thought it would be a great way to not only see the central part of Malta, but it also covered most of the island and with the 48h ticket you could do a day on the boat which takes you to Gozo and/or Comino.
As seen by a lot of the other reviews the problems are the buses are only every hour, only last til mid afternoon and if you want to do both loops in one day you can only really stop at one stop for an hour and that’s it.
We chose to use it as a guide to where we would like to visit for the rest of the week (and just used the local buses), but I understand why lots of reviews are v negative as once you work out you can only really do one stop it doesn’t feel v good value for money. The audio was just okay, so much more information and history could be added. The timetable as the day goes on gets less accurate (but the same could be said of the local buses) and the day we went for the boat ride, the first bus never turned up at all and the next was only taking those of us needing to get to the boats on time (use the hop on off bus to get to the ferry stop).
We decided to only go to Gozo (given the bad reviews of the blue lagoon) and chose not to do the Gozo hop on hop off bus and just got a local bus up to Victoria and back. On the way back the boat was rammed, there was not enough seats for everyone and disabled passengers were forced to stand and staff made no effort to ask seated passengers to give up their seats.
Overall it was disappointing and I would only recommend if you’re happy with just sitting on the bus to see where you’d like to go using either the local buses or hiring a car later on, which you might not think is worth it.
If they could increase the frequency of buses and extend how late they run it would be much better.

My husband and I have used hop on / hop off busses in many places, so we thought we would give this a try in an effort to see some of the interesting places in Malta.
What a mistake we made!
We boarded the bus in Mellieha, then spent the next hour or so travelling around a variety of resorts picking up extra passengers along the way. The one thing this taught us was that we were so happy to have chosen Mellieha as a place to stay!
When we finally reached Valletta I was conscious of having to check the bus timetable and locate the next stop in order to pick up the South Route in good time to be able to visit other places along the route.
This is in no way a ‘hop on / hop off’ experience. Stops were not announced in sufficient time, not enough busses were available to allow us to get off and enjoy a little time in the various locations en route, and when we did decide to disembark in order to visit the Hagar Qim historic site, we didn’t have enough time to see as much as we wanted to because the last bus was due in an hour’s time.
Then began the arduous, 1+ hour return to Mellieha, once again via numerous other stops (one couple missed their stop and were dropped off at a public bus stop miles from their destination so that the rest of us weren’t inconvenienced).
We spent most of the day on the bus and
didn’t even learn that much about the island!
Seriously, we’d have been much better off using the public busses at €1.50 a trip - we’d have reached our destinations faster and happier!

Not a good service. Less "hop on, hop off" and more hop on, stay on for hours and choose one or two stops wisely. I believe there were only 4 buses doing the entire route, so you simply cannot get off at as many stops as you like as the time will be up and you will have to make your own way home. Also, buying a ticket online was a complete waste. After purchase we got an email saying we needed to go all the way to Valletta to activate our ticket and couldn't just get on at the nearest stop. This took up an hour of our time getting to Valletta by local bus and we made the second last bus of the day (the last bus leaving Valletta leaves around 1:30pm). The staff were rather unpleasant and unhelpful. We had to go back to the staff to ask for the brochure and headphones and this seemed like an effort to them and they didn't speak just handed them to us. The announcements on the headphones were very limited. We stayed on the bus for maybe 1 hour 45 mins without getting off as we had to choose our one stop (as time allowed) wisely. We got off in Mdina which was a lovely and interesting town and made our way back to our accommodation by local bus. Have done these tours in many other cities and they have been great but this one was just a waste. Malta is such a beautiful country with so much to see and do. Just don't waste your time with this company doing it. Take the local bus instead. They're regular and go pretty much everywhere. The weekly or 12 trip cards are very reasonably priced so MUCH better value.

We’ve used hop/on/off buses in other cities. However in Malta there are some big stretches between some attractions (eg Valletta to Mdina) which means accurate timetables are important - and they weren’t on the day we travelled. This first bus didn’t turn up so we waited 40 mins (no apology or explanation from driver). We spent time in Valletta and had exactly the same experience when we wanted to get to Mdina. Because we waited so long (then the bus waited about 20 mins at the Waterfront) we couldn’t risk getting off and spending an hour at Mdina as there was no confidence we could get on the last bus to get back to St Paul’s bay.
Commentary very patchy. Nothing said at all about Mosta.
There is an excellent service bus timetable which you can get from the Tourist Info. Only €1.50 each journey. Just beware public holidays, they don’t run to timetable then!

Dreadful buses, uncomfortable, incredibly hot, and dirty.
We did the South tour which was pretty chaotic with the bus returning to Valetta from the Blue Grotto rather than continuing to St Julian's Bay which wasn't what we expected. Having studied the timetable in detail when we returned I realised that after a certain time of day the bus doesn't complete the tour. This should have been explained when we booked as the it's not that clear and certainly not what we were told.
Fast forward to the North tour where we got off the bus in Mdina again arriving late due to traffic. The problems started when we tried to get back on a bus. After waiting in a large and increasingly bad tempered queue for 45 minutes and with no sign of a bus we cut our losses and paid 2 Euro each for a clean, air conditioned public bus back to Valetta. 30 minutes later we were in the city centre.
My advice would be to use the public transport in Malta and save yourself money and an ordeal. My advice to City Sightseeing is take a look at how you operate in Malta as your service falls far short of our experience in other parts of the world.

Don't book this company, it is clear as soon as you try and get on that all the alternatives are better. There is no fixed timetable available (confirmed by the staff after I couldn't find one anywhere), so you just have to turn up and wait, often for over an hour. You are told to go to a specific stop to validate your ticket (meaning there are only two places on the whole island you can actually start this tour), but when you get there there are no signs, information, uniformed staff etc and you just have to wander around amongst hundreds of people and multiple bus companys asking. Staff at bus stop were consistently rude and had no issue with wasting people's time and money.
Information at hop on/off stops is limited, meaning more wasted time waiting for buses. The north and south routes don't link up neatly, making it difficult to do the circular in one day if you actually want to get off anywhere, with the start and stop times being quite limiting on the number of sights you can actually get off and see.
The buses in Malta are cheap and frequent, in future I'd advise people to just get the local bus to all the sights.

In line with earlier answers I would say that their actions dont always correspond with what is in the printed timetable, but they did inform me on the day of what changes were taking place and they did get me back to my hotel. I would always check with the drivers on the day
