What to expect
Meet a driver at your centrally located Reykjavik meeting spot, or at the cruise port, and then leave the city behind as you head into Iceland’s rugged, mountainous interior. The first stop on the Golden Circle route is Thingvellir National Park, where Iceland held its first parliamentary assembly. Hear guide commentary about the site as you admire the pristine beauty, and peer into the Thingvellir Rift, two tectonic plates joined by a narrow valley. Next, head to Gullfoss Waterfall, double-tiered cascades that send up spectacular mist and occasional rainbows. Continue along the Golden Circle to an area simmering with volcanic activity, hot springs, pools, and steam vents. Keep your camera ready at Strokkur, a powerful waterspout that erupts 98 feet (30 meters) in the air. This Golden Circle tour concludes with drop-off at your original departure point.

We were on a Jet2 break and after their shambolic Northern Lights trip went with Gray Line for the Golden Circle.
I am certainly glad we did , not only a lower price, but a professional slick experience. Our guide and driver were a great team and the day was perfectly paced, it feels nothing like 7 hours. The three 'attractions' are all stunning and there is plenty of time to enjoy them and still grab a loo stop or some food/drink. Hildur was interesting throughout, but didn't prattle on for the sake of it.
I would highly recommend the trip , practical hints are make sure you are properly dressed for the wildest conditions. Gullfoss falls was absolutely freezing when we went, with rain and mist pelting you incessantly, but the most stunning place I have ever been. There is no food and drink on the coach, but we took some lunch with us , so you are not hostage to the eateries on the tour. Although, we did need a hot chocolate after Gullfoss falls.
We had been in Reykjavik since the start of our trip and aside from the 3 sites you visit, it is hugely interesting to see some more of the countryside and hear about the Icelandic lifestyle.

This is the most popular tour in Iceland, and I can see why. You get to see three top notch attractions, with about an hour at each stop, in seven hours for only $65. Why drive when gasoline prices alone would be about $40 for that drive (depending on current gas prices and your vehicle mileage). Our tour guide (Darren) was very knowledgeable and quite amusing. He informed us about the flora, fauna, geology, and history of the sites. We told us what to see and do at each of the stops, but we were completely on our own at each stop, so we didn't feel like cattle being herded. He has a great upbeat attitude which made it enjoyable. I talked to him quite a bit and it's obvious he likes his job and people in general. Gardar was our driver and he was very good. You can take longer tours and see more sites, but I thought seven hours was enough. There were cafes and souvenir shops at each stop, and there was time for a quick bite and to shop and hit the rest room. The bus had 47 seats, but the rest room was not working, so getting to stop every hour was helpful. We were asked if we had any suggestions on how to improve the tour, but I honestly could not think of how it could be improved. Grayline has fine tuned this tour to near perfection. Having perfect weather was just icing on the cake.

Golden Circle Review...... We booked this trip whilst we were actually on holiday a couple of days before as we wanted to make sure we had a good bright weather's day for it and there was minimal rain in the local forcast. So glad we booked it and dropped on with a good days weather although it was freezing!
We went on the trip on Tuesday 10th May it was through Gray Line Tour Company of Iceland. The communication for pick up was good and informative via text and emails. The trip was excellent. We sat right at the front of the coach so got fantastic views! Our guide was lovely with a microphone, very informative and knowledgeable throughout.
Although the weather was sunny, cloudy and windy, it was absolutely freezing. Definitely take gloves and wear a hat and scarf. There were three stops, the first at Thingvellir National Park then onto Geysir Geothermal area and lastly at Gullfoss Waterfall.
I was a little concerned about the trip as I am terrified of heights but all the stops were ok. There was wooden fences around the dangerous high parts and its your own choice how far you go up to the view points. At each stop there was toilet facilities and places to eat / drink with gift shops. We got picked up at the bus stop 13 at 930am and got dropped off around 4pm in the same place. So glad we did this trip, it took us out of the capital of Reykjavík and we saw some stunning scenery and natural beauty of Iceland!

The tour guide was really good and we learned alot about both the locations we were visiting and Iceland in general from her. However, the weather was so horrendous; freezing cold, pelting rain and high winds that it was almost impossible to stay out in it for long enough to see any of the sights properly. Our faces hurt after literally a minute or 2 and couldn't even take photos really.
We felt that it would actually have been better to cancel it as it seemed like a waste of money.

Our guide was highly knowledgeable certainly delivering value for money with almost 7 hours of running commentary on everything from the tax system to the mink whale population to Nobel winning writers. Something in there for everyone!
On the negative side this was a real pack-them-in bus trip with 69 people on board. No seats left free and bigger groups split up if you were last on board. The air conditioning at the back of the bus was not working leading one older lady to describe the experience as a 7 hour hot flush!! The response from the guide after several complaints was - what do you expect with 69 people on board on a sunny day! Hardly helpful. Definitely the most uncomfortable of our 3 bus tours in Iceland. Couldn't recommend it despite the knowledgeable guide.

This tour will live in infamy as the hottest tour I've ever been on. The bus was overwhelmingly hot in March to the point where everyone on the bus was sweating and shedding layers. We asked multiple times for the heat to be turned off and potentially even the AC turned on given how hot we were. The tour guide just said we would thank him later after we got off on the stop and it was cold. He finally got the message that we were miserable but only seemed to get cold air for a few minutes.

The stops were okay, but very rushed. They were trying to get people back for a Sky Lagoon tour and it felt like they reduced the normal time spent at the stops. There was not ample time to grab food and see the sights so bring snacks if you actually want to see the views. The stops were all also extremely crowded - be prepared for tons of people.

Overall, would recommend a different tour completely.

Excellent tour. Guide informative. Time in each location is a bit short, leaving you a little rushed to see everything and get back to the bus to move on to the next stop. Although I understand that due to the length of daylight in winter it is necessary to move swiftly in order to get to each location while it is still daylight.
Tip! Bring your own lunch and snacks as food is very expensive in the cafe that they stop for lunch in. A bowl of soup is about €15

After the nervousness on whether we were on the correct bus stop, the Gray Line bus appeared and Darren and Gunni took excellent care of us. I thought we were gonna travel in silence, but 90% of the time Darren taught us something about the sights / country. We booked the trip on GetYourGuide app, chose bus stop 6 as pickup and only have to give my name to get on the bus. (Note that many other buses stop on the bus stop, so wait for the Gray line and that the guide checks your name). The bus did not have a toilet, but every stop had toilets and shops/restaurants.
The first ride to Thingvellir national park took about 40mins and we had 30min to wander there. Both the path down and the extremely clear watered lake were incredible.
The next stop was Gullfoss waterfall, a 1h drive and little over 1h to see the waterfall, eat lunch and buy souveniers. The waterfall was mesmarizing, from every view point.
Last stop was the geysirs, where you can also eat or at least buy ice cream and see Strokkur erupt around every 5-10mins. (Darren warned us not to stand downwind). The ride back to Reykjavik was 1,5 hours.
We learned so much useful information from Darren and enjoyed the 7h trip, got way too many pictures.

We had booked a small group Golden Circle trip with another company on the last day of our holiday but the evening before we heard that, due to poor weather, the trip was cancelled.

We were bitterly disappointed and next morning walked into Gray Line offices and simply asked if they had anything running that day. They fitted us into their Golden Circle trip going that day without any hassle. The coach to pick us up turned up on time and the guide was excellent, both amusing and sufficiently solicitous for our welfare and safety without being fussy. Yes, it was a truly bitter day with heavy snow falling and high winds but for all that we are so pleased we saw the waterfalls, geyser and rift.

falls/geysir/national park are a must see, so beautiful!
HOWEVER, the bus that we were on with Greyline was very much like a high school drop off bus (the window next to our seat was plugged with tissue paper to stop the leaking-this did not actually work, so we had to change seats as we were getting dripped on!
We then moved seats and rain was coming into the bus from the roof hatch above us which meant three of the chairs were soaking wet. One couple then changed buses and me and my partner sat separately on dry seats.
The tour guide was very informative and did offer for us to change buses however I personally don’t think this bus should be in use at all/the tour guide should have told customers about the issue prior to boarding.

We went on to book the rest of our excursions with Reykjavík excursions which seems to be a more popular company here and our northern lights trip with them had a much nicer bus. We also used them for a transfer to and from the blue lagoon.

Hope this helps! :)
