Our photography tour occurred on a very challenging day, as our guide Oren stated, due to a thick cloud cover over the entirety of Finland with only some possibility of clear skies along the border between Finland and Sweden at 1 am. Even though the tour was only supposed to last for 4 hours from 8 pm to 12 am, Oren did not give up and strived to provide us with the best views of the Northern Lights by driving all the way to the Finnish border with Sweden. While Oren was driving, he demonstrated his vast knowledge of the Northern Lights by sharing a great deal of information.

When we were near the border, we camped in a hut at a viewing point on a hill named Aavasaksa trying to look for the Northern Lights. Though we weren't able to see the Northern Lights at this location, Oren still helped to take tons of photos of my group and other groups within the same tour, while providing us with sausages grilled on a fireplace and warm glögi.

When Oren had finished taking the photos, it was already 12:30 am, so we began our trip back to Rovaniemi. However, just as Oren had predicted, the skies started to clear up slightly as we were on a small road near the Finnish-Swedish border driving back to Rovaniemi. Thanks to Oren's expertise and observation, we were able to see some green clouds (i.e., clouds with Nothern Lights behind them). While they certainly aren't as visually stimulating as the photos of the Northern Lights you would see on the internet, it was still unlike anything I had ever seen before and I was equally in awe. Oren immediately set up his professional camera and tripods for our smartphones to take photos upon spotting the green clouds, and we were all able to take decent photos of the green clouds (of course the ones taken by Oren were much better though). When we arrived back in Rovaniemi at around 3 am, Oren still drove us back to our accommodation in Rovaniemi which we appreciated a lot.

Overall, Oren was such a great guide and his knowledge and expertise helped make the experience a great one. I highly recommend anyone looking to see and photograph the Northern Lights from the best possible position to join this tour.

We started our tour on a very cloudy evening and the forecasts to see any northern lights were extremely low. So we did not expect to see any Northern Lights. But our super-guide, Oren, used all forces: his experience, three different meteorological systems, information from colleagues and a strong will to give us an unforgettable northern-light-hunting experience. He drove us all the way to the Swedish boarder to a mountain with two “balconies” above some cliffs – and there we indeed saw some wonderful northern lights. With the help of our guide Oren we managed to take beautiful photos with our own camera. During our ride to the Swedish boarder Oren gave us a very profound and clear introduction into the background of how Northern Lights come about. Thanks to our very competent, experienced and very nice guide, this was a perfect tour. We very much recommend the “Beyond Artic” company that works sustainably and environmentally friendly.

It was the perfect experience to chase the Northern lights.
Our guide, Ryan, is really passionate about sharing his knowledge and making sure the group has the best time.
Even though we were lucky enough to see the northern lights right when we arrived on the spot, we stayed for a few more hours in case we could see more.
He put us in a teepee with a fire so we were not too cold and kept checking on the sky.
I highly recommend Beyond Arctic for their professionalism (knowing that we were with people that night who had done the same kind of tour the previous night with other guides and were not satisfied at all)
Thank you this magical moment ✨️

The tour is very well organised, but Oren is not a nice guide at all. The tour was advanced in time almost an hour, but still we lost the moment with the most activity, because Oren keeps annoying everyone time and time again about the clothing and some unimportant details. When we arrived a lot later, the activity had dropped a lot, so little northern light was still visible. Also, it seemed to bother Oren that my wife - which is a professional photographer - didn't want to use his settings. We also got a hard remark about the fact that my wife had to use her flashlight to setup her camera (she needed to do that for 5 minutes to adjust the settings at the beginning of the shoot). But the rest of the night Oren disturbed my wife's photographing with his flaslight, which stayed on the whole time, without interruption. When we wanted to move further away from the group (because of the light) it was forbidden. And than he started to play with bigger lights to shoot some portret pictures of all the people. We payed double cost (according to most organisations) to higher our chances to see northern light, not to have portret pictures taken in the dark with light effects. One good point, Oren had us stay till midnight (he didn't bother to stay a little longer) and at 23h30 we finally got some northern light after all. Just regretfull that Oren's flashlight is visible in every picture we took (shutter speed was 30 to 60 seconds). When afterwards Oren explained that his pictures can be purchased I understand why he didn't want my wife to take her professional pictures, or why these pictures should best faulter. But Oren forgets that we allready payed 250 Euros to have 4-5 hours of expedition time for the both of us. Selling pictures should be a nice extra for those who are interested, but should not ruin the whole experience for everyone. On top, Oren is very arrogant and unfriendly to people. We were 8 people and he asked the same people four times where they were coming from... A little empathy is mandatory for a guide, unless it's for a free museum tour.

Dear Rudy, Thank you for your feedback and joining our Northern Lights tour. For me it seems that you have had very personal issue with our guide Oren who has been one of the most liked guides in our team and have received nothing but positive feedback over this winter. It is very sad for me to learn that you have felt such a way on a tour that has been otherwise great and very well organized. I feel that booking your place on small group adventure (with total 8 people) as your wife is professional photographer might be an issue here, as you have clearly been annoyed by other people and the things that are happening around you. If we would have known this beforehand, we would have definitely recommended a private tour for you, on which your wife will get all the attention and there is nothing around you to disturb her. With proper communication, this could have been easily avoided as we always recommend private tour for every professional photographer joining our tours. I will let our guide Oren to answer your feedback, as you have brought this issue very personal level in your feedback. Oren's answer: First of all I must say I was surprised and got hurt personally from your review, and I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart that this was your experience from our tour. I experienced things differently and so did the rest of the group - I got good reviews from the very same tour. I think that with proper communication between your wife and me, your bad experience that you described would have been solved already during the tour right away. I've been working in the guiding field for more than 16 years and I never got such a review like the one you left. You wrote a very detailed review so I will try to address the things you mention. About clothing and equipment we provide in our office before going out for tours and expeditions - safety is always number one in all our activities. In the arctic there is extreme conditions and temperatures can drop rapidly, so having warm thermal overalls, gloves, hats and boots and woolen socks to keep the body warm to avoid hypothermia and frostbites is very important. For some guests there is better clothing already when they arrive and for some there is not enough clothing. As a team we need to be patient and wait for all the guests in the group to be ready for the journey. Same with extra equipment we provide for the photographing like tripods for cameras and smartphones as well as rental cameras. About asking our guests about their camera settings: Not all our guests are professional photographers, and one of the main service we provide in our photography tours is to help the guests to set up their cameras and take photographs of the northern lights on their own. I'm very sorry if your wife got offended by the night photography tips I gave her. About light disturbing in the night photography: I always recommend all the participants of the group to take a good distance from each other, so that we will not be in front of each other. On the location we have been and like in all the other private locations we have, there is very wide and open space for photographing. This is one of the biggest advantages to be in a small group on a private location and not supporting mass tourism. Indeed, sometimes we still need to communicate with each other so that we will not disturb each other with lights while photographing. If we are too near to each other or the angle of the camera is including your neighbor photographer, in this case we always communicate. Your wife went quite far, and I asked her several times if everything is ok and didn’t hear complaints. Part of the service we provide is also photographing people with the northern lights, I understand and respect that some people will not want to be in front of the camera, but in order to photograph the rest of the group, the guide photographer must use flashlight in order to focus the camera to the face of the model and also to use flash. But as I said before, one of the main targets of this tour is that our guests themselves will take pictures of the northern lights with their own cameras, and the guide will do EVERYTHING to help them to get good photos. In this case I failed with the communication with your wife and for this I’m very sorry. Even though, as I said, I did try to communicate with her in the field and did ask if everything is going well. About moving away from the group, the truth is the opposite what you mentioned. As I said, I’m encouraging to take a big distance from each other. You might refer to a guidance I gave when we arrived to a location, that I don’t recommend going too far on the lake, because in this area there was about 20-30 cm of cold water on the top of the ice, so in order to not get your feet wet and cold we give information about the surroundings. You and your wife were in the opposite direction. About your sentence I wanted your wife pictures to fail, I must say I got really hurt, because the main task we have is that our guests will get good pictures with the equipment they have, and for this we put lots of concentration and effort every night. I must say, I did try many times to communicate with your wife (we both talked English), and I felt she rejected my offer for help. And about the pictures that we take for our team members with our own cameras, they are free of charge! It is included on the price of the tour. If some guests want the highest quality, original versions of the pictures in order to have a large prints, then they can pay extra to get the maximum quality pictures. This way we respect the professionalism of each of our photographer. But pictures we provide free of charge from the tour are in good quality for social media and small prints. And about your last sentence, I will not answer directly to what you wrote, I would just say it is not appropriate to have this kind of personal attack in a review. I would address to the reason you wrote it, that I probably asked a few times where are you from, as I said before, safety in the tour is number one, and when a guide needs to drive on icy roads in the dark, with reindeers that might appear on the road, and to think also about the weather, locations and to give useful informative information about the northern lights and how to chase them, sometimes, not all the information said in the car is being recorded in the memory, especially if the guide have attention deficit disorder like me (-: I must say, I have a very different experience from what you described, because me and your wife were talking in the car about her being professional photographer and we had a very nice and positive conversation about different aspects of real estate photography and many other subjects. After all this I find this personal attack very weird. Finally, I want to say that I apologize from the bottom of my heart for your experience, I think it would look different with better communication. I wish you and your wife all the best. Oren.

This is the one thing you need to do in Rovaneimi. Knowledgeable guides at Beyond Arctic are willing to travel long distances in search of Northern Lights across Finland and Sweden. Other companies will load you onto big buses and maybe go to one or two spots. Beyond Arctic’s Northern Lights Tour offers a more intimate and more personalized experience. Being new to this, I didn’t realize the science behind it. The guides here use weather apps and data from NASA to pinpoint the ideal time to go hunting for the lights. But the best part is the guides are also great photographers capturing images of you and the Aurora Borealis to take home. If you don’t have your own winter gear, Beyond Arctic has snow suits, gloves, boots, etc. Get ready for a fun night. The whole group is great but ask for Ryan.

Me and my wife went for the Northern lights tour. Our guide was Juhani and we are well pleased by his services. He is a knowledgible, professional and a great guide. He didn't leave any stone unturned and drove all the way close to the Sweden border away from light pollution. Though the sky was clear but there was no activity so we couldn't spot Aurora's. Juhani took some great photos and we enjoyed grilling sausages over fire. Beyond Arctic is a professional company and we would like to highly recommend it.

We had a great experience on this trip! Had Oren as our guide. He was very knowledgeable about the northern lights and helped us maximize the quality of our photos by helping us with the settings. When the lights were not strong where we were at, he took us a bit farther to see if it was more clear while other tours were going back. We ended up seeing an amazing show that lasted about 2 hours. Truly an incredible experience. We talked to several people the next day who were shocked when we said how amazing the lights were because they only went to the original location with less strong lights and went back to rovaniami just as we were going to the second location. 10/10 would recommend this trip

Edit: originally gave 5 stars but dropped to 2 stars after receiving the photos.

We went for the northern lights tour (13th Jan) in hopes to see the aurora. We had been in Finland for 8 days, with today being our 2nd last night and the weather forecast has been cloudy all week (everyday says 100% clouds). So we had not seen any auroras.. We were hoping for a miracle on this tour! Our guide was Victoria and on our first destination the auroras were behind the clouds, so we couldn't see it with our eyes. They took a photo anyways and said the aurora is visible on the camera, despite it being behind the clouds. But on the way home, there was an aurora. Victoria went out of her way to stop 4 times for our group to see them! We were able to see the auroras with our naked eye during this time. At our accomodation (Apukka), there was a massive aurora which Victoria kindly took further photos and waited until the clouds came in again. The sad thing is that out of the numerous photos she took of us at Apukka, only 4 was sent to us (2 of the 4 were the picture of us, and the other two were the auroras). On the night Victoria said we can have all the photos if we asked for them. So I emailed the company to send all of them to us. They replied that all the photos she took were out of focus/blurry, and only 2 were good. We felt disappointed considering we paid around $500AUD (due to the euro conversion rate). =( thankfully we went with another tour company the day after, who took amazing professional photos of the auroras and with us in it too. It was a smaller company, so wasn't time bound and all photos were sent to us. Overall, Victoria the tour guide was nice.

Hi there, Thank you very much for your 5 star review for our Northern Lights tour! I’m very happy that you got to see the Northern Lights after a proper Aurora chase with Victoria and also got some pictures from the tour! 😊 The second part and update of your review and comments: “don’t expect quality photos” is something our team and Victoria founds very inappropriate and something that has nothing to do with the tour you participated. Your tour that night had ended 1:30 in Beyond Arctic office and before that we chased down the clear skies for you and you got collection of edited photos sent to you from the tour. You had ordered extra service from us to drop you back to Apukka resort AFTER THE TOUR. It was pure matter of luck, that Victoria even had her camera in the car when dropping you out to your accommodation and now you are giving her 2 star review because of this fully extra photography service we provided you free of charge? We find your behaviour absolutely disrespectful. The fact is that Victoria was so kind that she took the camera out in Apukka resort and even took a few pictures of you on HER OWN FREE TIME AFTER THE TOUR even though she should have been already driving back to office. This is the thanks you are giving to her? Let me point out a few things we have to ensure when working as a professional photography agency: 1. We never send all the photos to our guests from the tour. We are professional photography agency, and we also make sure that this is seen in the photos we deliver to you. We are not one of those regular every night aurora tours from which you will be dumped with pile of UNEDITED photos containing huge amount of shaken and inaccurate photos. We actually take pride of the photos we deliver to you, and you can see it in quality. 2. The first set of photos Victoria took from you in Apukka were test photos to get focus and exposure right in the camera – We don’t send this kind of test photos. Then we took photos of you and there were some photos that were shaken, because you moved too much during the long exposure – We don’t send this kind of shaken photos. Finally, you got all together 4 photos sent to you from the DROP OFF service, from which you should get NO PHOTOS AT ALL and there should not even be camera in the car. Victoria took these extra photos for you to make your experience even better. Now it seems she definitely should have not done anything extra, if this is your way to thank her of this extra, she provided to you. So after all these photos we provided to you outside of the tour hours, free of charge, you think that whole tour is now dropped from 5 stars to 2 stars? This makes absolutely no sense. After chasing Northern Lights to you, after getting photos taken on the tour and even providing extra photos from the service that has nothing to do with our Northern Lights tour and is done with Victoria’s own time? We find your review and comments lack of respect towards Victoria on a fully cloudy night she still was able to find Northern Lights for you. Your Aurora chasing team was one those few who actually got to see the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi region that night, thanks to Victoria’s commitment to do the extra mile and chase down the clear skies. We have already reported this to TripAdvisor, as your photo comments and review has nothing to do with the actual tour you have taken part and rated here and is against the rules.

The BEST northern lights tour — I would not use any other company! They communicate with crews who hunt for the lights to put you in the best position possible (other companies I researched take you to a specific location and hope for the best). Plus being on the tour with an actual photographer was a MAJOR advantage. Our guide Ryan took amazing photos of us even before the auroras came out, and it was a relief to know when they did come out that he had us covered. Photos he took were sent to us a week later for free! He was also super helpful with setting up my own camera and teaching us what to look for, which turned out to be super helpful later in the week when we weren't on a tour and we were just searching for ourselves. We knew to shoot with our cameras even if we couldn't see them with our naked eye and we ended up seeing a ton of lights that others probably would've missed without that knowledge. I can't say enough good things about this tour and would not use any other company to hunt the auroras.

The Northern Lights Tour was a dream experience and we saw the aurora from the centre of a frozen lake. It was incredible and our guide Juhani was fantastic, full of knowledge and enthusiasm and we drove through some bad weather to clear skies because he knew exactly where to go. We had a fire and hotsnacks which kept us going in the freezing cold. When the sky exploded it was miracle of nature and more than worth the wait. Absolutely life enhancing day !
