Gubbio, a Medieval jewel in Umbria - Private Tour
By Blue Cat Tours
About
The tour begins at the Gubbio Cathedral and the Palazzo Ducale, built by Federico da Montefeltro in the Renaissance and particularly famous for its impressive “studiolo” made of inlaid wood panels.
Then follow your knowledgeable guide to the very heart of Gubbio, the marvellous square called Piazza Grande: from here you will enjoy a breathtaking view over the beautiful Umbrian countryside!
Here, facing the square, you can find the most important medieval palaces in Gubbio, like the massive Palazzo dei Consoli, that is now a museum housing the Iguvine Tablets (Tabulae Iguvinae), the largest surviving text in the Umbrian language, from pre-Roman times (they are more than 2300 years old!).
Discover the secrets of the medieval town, like the mystery of the so-called “doors of the dead”, and the legend of Saint Francis: according to the catholic tradition, he tamed a wolf that terrified the city…
But was the wolf of Gubbio really a wild beast? Enjoy the tour and find out!

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- AllisonOS0 contributionsSkip the Line Evening Tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel is Well Worth It!Our family looked forward to this tour as the highlight of our stay in Rome. And the tour did not disappoint. Granted, we were there in October, long after the summer hordes of tourists had left the city. However, this "after hours" tour with "skip the line" entitlement, is nevertheless still a crowded endeavor. Hundreds and hundreds of other tourists will be on line with you. But the tour operators have entrance timings down to a science, with many different entry locations that result in a highly organized way to enter the museum and move with "elbow room." We were never rushed and could linger along the way without being hassled. Once inside the Sistine Chapel, we enjoyed an awe inspiring experience that will stay with us forever.Written 27 January 2024

- michelecK5186SL0 contributionsAn Enchanting Journey Through HistoryMy experience in Montefalco was absolutely remarkable! This charming location is a living testament to the rich history and artistic beauty of Umbria. Our tour guide was exceptional, possessing a profound knowledge of local history and delivering a passionate narrative that made every moment even more engaging. I particularly appreciated the attention to detail and the ability to convey a love for art and culture. The interior of the church is a true gem, adorned with magnificent frescoes. The sensation of being immersed in centuries of history was simply magical. Furthermore, the tranquil and picturesque atmosphere of Montefalco made this visit even more memorable. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves art, history, and culture. You won't regret it!Written 6 October 2023
- michelecK5186SL0 contributionsHighly recommendedI had a wonderful time on the guided tour of the most beautiful squares of Rome. The tour covered some of the most important and iconic places of the city. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, and explained the history and the art of each square. I learned a lot of interesting facts and stories that made me appreciate even more the beauty and the culture of Rome! Some of the highlights of the tour were: - Piazza di Spagna, where I climbed the famous Spanish Steps and took a picture with the Fountain of the Barcaccia, made by Bernini. - Fontana di Trevi, where I tossed a coin and made a wish, following the tradition. - Pantheon Square, where I was amazed by the Romans columns the huge dome. - Piazza Navona, where I was stunned by the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini, one of his masterpieces. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to discover the best of Rome in a short time! It is a great way to experience the charm and the elegance of this eternal city!Written 17 September 2023
- Journey5548620 contributionsIt was so interesting and lovely! I felt immersed in Ancient Rome.Serena was amazing!! She was so informative and answered all our questions . She is so knowledgeable and she helped us learn so much during this private tour. We highly recommend taking a tour with Blue Cat tours!Written 2 July 2023
- Scott B0 contributionsWell Presented piece of Renaissance historyWe did not do a private tour, but as noted a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. There are almost no furnishings, but the frescos in every room are spectacular. The climb up the garden to the smaller villa is worth the effort.Written 17 May 2023
- 951claudem0 contributionsConsider doing this one as much as the Duomo in Florence, Sixtine chapel and PompeiiOne of The most impressive villa of Italy … historically important and reflective of 2 popes, several cardinals, etc. Some of the best floors and particularly wall and ceiling paintings. The room of maps circa 1573 , brings to light the power and knowledge the popes in terms of geography… you will be overwhelmed. Outstanding construction and gardens … at first it looks ordinary then you discover a grand building which should not be missed. Charming town… only accessible by car … and you have to be comfortable with narrow streets.Written 9 April 2023
- nefertari13130 contributionsA nice view from the topYou can find some exhibitions in this castle. The view from the top is stunning so worth the trip on the stairs. You can find a nice cafe on the top.Written 7 February 2023
- Peter M0 contributionsBasilica of Saint Francis in AssissiI never went on a private tour as too expensive. I did go on a Cosmos tour which was paid for in the Cosmos tour! It is very impressive It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. St Francis of Assisi is buried in a crypt here. The basilica was begun in 1228.Written 31 December 2022
- ashanberg0 contributionsGreat place to visirTarquinius and the Etruscan relics are phenomenal and a must see if you love history. Unfortunately my experience with the trip advisor recommended guide was rerrible. Because of traffic problems we could not make the scheduled time. When I spoke to the guide and asked to either delay our time or reschedule, she refused. She said she was busy the rest of that day and the next day that we were in TRquinea. We hired another guide th hotel suggested and she was wonderful and we loved the experience but not the trip advisor guide.Written 18 September 2022
- carmann500 contributionsFrescos and Etruscan historySerena provided a very informative tour in English of the various tombs at the Etruscan Necropolis. The Etruscans were a fascinating and talented people who left behind incredible art. Serena has studied archaeology and offered great insight to the history and symbolism in the beautiful frescos. She was very punctual and professional, and I really enjoyed this experience. When visiting a site in such confined quarters like these tombs, having a personal guide versus group tour is optimal. (Tarquinia was a pleasant town for an overnight visit and I had a great dinner on the piazza.)Written 17 June 2022
- MARTI C0 contributionsPerfect private tour of the Basilica of Saint FrancisAfter our two-hour private tour of the upper and lower basilicas of Saint Francis, I can't imagine this experience without the expert guidance of Serena Paolini. She shared so many facts and little things that we would not have noticed, but the amount of information was never overwhelming, just purely enjoyable. She also knows well how to comfortably move you through the spaces. Communicating with ear phones meant that we easily heard every word. I would definitely use this service again and highly recommend it to others.Written 4 June 2022
- TheRetinator0 contributionsFantastic and educational tour of the Colosseum and Forum.Serena gave us a fantastic, unrushed, and educational tour of the Colosseum and Forum. She was witty, knowledgeable, and an all-around great host. I would recommend her to anyone with an interest in the important history of ancient Rome.Written 1 May 2022
- 927szymonp0 contributionsAmazing Tour with an amazing guide!Villa Farnese in Caprarola is a marvellous and beautiful place, and I recommend everyone to see it. But we would certainly not be able to appreciate its beauty and history without a great guide - and Serena, our Guide from Blue Cat Tours, did a great job. We do not often hire an additional local guide for our tours, yet it was an absolute jewel! Serena has a HUGE knowledge about nuances, history and context of all the things she talks about, but she is able to express it in a way making you understand it fully, even without deep knowledge beforehand. After an amazing 2+ hours in Caprarola with her, we almost immediately decided to book not one, but TWO additional tours with her in Rome, and we do not regret a single euro spent on these. The time spent with her was enriching, entertaining and pleasant in all the ways imaginable, and I cannot recommend her enough. Great choice for everyone wanting to spend some quality time and learn more about this beautiful region.Written 1 September 2021
- 994philipn0 contributionsAnother Amazing ExperienceOur guide Serena, provided us endless information about the museums, palaces, artwork, and statues. The museums are vast, one could spend days just viewing the artwork in each one. Serena did a great job focusing on the most important works and providing unique insights into a variety of pieces. A truly great tour.Written 25 July 2021
