What to Expect
After your dose of the typical Vatican and Colosseum tours, you may want to add a little more variety to your Rome itinerary. On this tour, witness the eerie Capuchin Crypts, Domitilla Catacombs and Appian Way. With a combo of burial grounds, an ancient church and one of the oldest roads in Rome, you’re set to experience tons of bone-chilling Roman history. This 3-hour tour includes:
• - Guided tour of the Capuchin Crypts
• - Guided tour of the Christian Catacombs of Domitilla
• - English-speaking tour guide
• - Luxury climate-controlled transportation

Capuchin Crypts

Hidden beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, you can find chapels containing the remains of more than 3,500 bodies. Thought these crypts are not technically considered catacombs, they’re reminiscent of the Paris Catacombs. With bones, skulls and other mysterious artifacts, these crypts allow travelers to jump back in time and discover the burial methods of ancient Rome. Within this ossuary, you’ll be able to uncover the remains of Capuchin friars buried between the years of 1500 and 1870.

Domitilla Catacombs

These catacombs were created due to a shortage of burial space in Rome. In this underground experience, you’ll instantly notice the many ancient frescoes carved into the walls. If you’re looking for a mission, try to find the ancient fresco depicting The Last Supper. Other frescoes you may find portray to transportation of grain to Ostia, a profession many of the people buried in this site had during their lives. Learn about the maze of tunnels these catacombs make up as your guide delves into the mysteries of Rome’s most spine-chilling underground space.

The Appian Way and Aurelian Walls

Built during the third century, the Aurelian walls were constructed to protect Rome from barbarians entering the city. On this portion of the tour, pass by these ancient walls that have been a source of security for Rome for thousands of years. Get the opportunity to walk on the Appian way, one of the original seven roads that led to Rome. Learn about the Appian Way’s darker past and complete your Catacombs tour knowing tons more about ancient Roman

Never before have we seen bones hanging on walls in a museum! The catacombs were amazing. Amanda was a fantastic guide who was very knowledgeable. She also gave us a great recommendation for pizza at lunch.

This was an awesome tour. Everything was well lit with passage ways in the catacombs of about 3 feet wide. The capuchin crypt is all above ground. I would definitely recommend. One of our favorite things we did in Rome.
