What to expect
Your tour begins in central Rome, where you greet your guide and—with skip-the-line ticket in hand—sail past the long lines that often form outside of the Vatican. Once inside, make a beeline for top Vatican attractions, such as the Gallery of Maps, Raphael's Rooms, and the indisputable main attraction: the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo’s frescoes adorn the ceiling. After discovering little-known information about the history of the landmark, continue to St. Peter’s Basilica to admire standout features, such as the gold-painted ceiling and altarpiece. Your tour concludes here, but you’re free to continue exploring independently, if you wish.

Prior to our first visit to Rome, we booked our semi private guided tour tickets of the Vatican in advance. There were so many to choose from it was a bit of a stab in the dark but What A Life Tours did not disappoint, couldn’t recommend them enough!! Arriving at the meeting point we were greeted with the warmest of welcomes and once the rest of our group arrived (just 3 other people) we set off on our Vatican adventure with Marco. Marco is Roman born and bred and is full of knowledge not only of the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel & St Peters Basilica but of the city in general. He is clearly extremely passionate about what he does and we were hooked on his every word from from the very start right to the end. Marco is so engaging and managed to keep all members of the group gripped, from 2 children to 3 adults! He brought humour to the tour, he was willing to answer all our questions, he went above and beyond and brought us what felt like the true VIP treatment. 100% amazing value for money, could not recommend enough and have been on a high after this tour ever since!! Thank you What A Life Tours & Marco!

What a day we had yesterday with What a Life Tours going round the Vatican Basilica, the Museums and the Sistine Chapel. If you want to do this trio, then in our opinion, you simply have to take a guide in order to get round in an organised and efficient way, but also to receive valuable insights into what you are seeing. The queue for the Vatican is also very long indeed and the guide allows you to skip all the waiting and is very much worth the money when you have 4 people including teenagers. All of the Vatican sights are amazing, Elaine our guide was so knowledgeable about the Basilica that it made this part of the tour particularly informative. The huge scale of the monument is such a reality check when you get inside. The whole tour just builds and builds as you enter the Vatican museums, each one completely spell binding. The map rooms and the Raphael rooms are breath taking in their decoration, art and thematic depictions. Our guide Elaine made the whole 4 hour tour very enjoyable and entertaining with her knowledge and she also knew that your senses are taking in so much, that you also need some light hearted humour and jokes along the way. The whole tour finishes with the greatest man made thing I have ever seen in my life - the Sistine Chapel. If you have seen pictures of this before you go in, we’ll, nothing can prepare you for the enormous impact this masterpiece has on your soul. Just thinking about the individual, personal sacrifice Michelangelo made in order to deliver this to the world alters your perception of purpose. I am typical bloke who loves watching and playing sport, not given over to exaggeration etc. This experience was like an earthquake.

We had a long holiday weekend in Rome and booked primarily to expedite the lines but the tour far surpassed our expectations and I would highly recommend anyone traveling here for the first time use an experienced guide. Elaine was brilliant and her knowledge and passion for the city's art and history was genuine and enthusiastic. In the three days we've been here we've fallen in love with Rome and Elaine helped us appreciate the richness of it's history and why it's a city I will want to revisit again and again.

Our tour guide, Elaine, really made this tour for us. Her unique sense of humour and her astonishing recall of facts about just about everything made this a tour to remember. Would really recommend this company and this guide to anyone hoping to visit the Vatican in the near future and it’s worth pointing out that tours get in before the general population!

Book this tour! Our guide knew all the “ins-and-outs” of the Vatican and his expertise in art history was fantastic. We toured on Easter Saturday. The crowds were tremendous. Yet our guide’s familiarity allowed us to see the sites effortlessly. In fact, he clearly knew some of the security people at the Vatican Museum, resulting in our being directly lead from big queues inside the museum directly to the highlights. In fact, his relationships with some of the curators got us a bonus visit to the Vatican necropolis. Highly recommended. These folks know their way around and then some!

The best reason for a guided tour is to make sure you hit all the highlights on what might be your only visit ever. Our tour was three hours, and we really kind of skimmed the museum, focusing on the most important items and hearing the history of them from our guide, Lucia. An engaging and knowledgeable guide, she brings the place to life! Audioguides are boring - a LIVE guide imparts their own enthusiasm and can answer your questions, making a nice visit so much better. The Sistine Chapel is gorgeous of course. We found it hilarious that you're not allowed to speak (good luck with that) or take pictures (oh, sure), and every few minutes this huge booming voice comes over the loudspeaker telling everyone that SILENCE IS REQUIRED. Anyway, the tour was great, and I'm glad we had our guide in St. Peters, too. So much history, and it's just overwhelming without someone to point out the fantastic trivia and interesting tidbits, as well as the do-not-miss items.

My tour guide Elaine was by far the best guide I have ever had in my travels. She was so professional and knowledgeable. She knew a lot of little insider tidbits that even other guides are not aware of. If you are thinking about doing an English speaking guided tour I highly recommend choosing What A Life Tours and Especially with Elaine as your guide.

The Tour is not cheap but as with so many things you get what you pay for!
I cannot fault this organisation. The communication beforehand was first class, minimising any mistakes about being at the right place at the right time.
There were 11 in our group which made movement through the museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peters pretty seamless.
The best feature of the 3 hours was our guide, Marco. His knowledge was phenomenal, no questions remained unanswered, he interacted with us all and did so with humour. The time flew by even when there was a little necessary queuing.
I tend to like to find my own way round places I am visiting, Marco made me think again.

Our tour started with Elaine giving us some bad news: St. Peter's would be closed to tours that day because the Pope had decided the night before to use the church for it's intended purpose, mass! I was disappointed and wondered how we would fill the time that would have normally been given to touring the basilica. Looking back though, I'm not sure what I would have cut from the tour to make room for St. Peters! Elaine was full of jokes, facts, and witticisms and my disappointment was soon forgotten. She has a real passion for the subject and by the end of the tour I was grateful to have a tour guide as skilled as her (it helps that she has many Roman Secrets, which you'll have to do the tour to learn!). If I hear that a friend is going to Rome I will highly recommend What a Life Tours and Elaine as a tour guide.
