  • Receive personalized attention on a small-group tour
  • Travel by comfortable air-conditioned vehicle from central Rome
What to expect
  • Make your own way to the predetermined departure point in central Rome where you meet your guide. Step aboard the climate-controlled coach and head to the catacombs, which are located underneath the Basilica of St. Sebastian. Your guide explains the significance of the church façade, then takes you inside to see the tomb of St Sebastian. Next, descend to the catacombs, the first burial site of the Appian Way. As you look around, your guide shares informative commentary about the catacombs, such as the legend that they once held the bodies of the apostles St Peter and St Paul. Continue along the Via Appia to the tomb of Cecilia Metella, which dates to the first century BC and was made to honor the daughter of the Roman Consul. It later became a castle for the Caetani family, an aristocratic family with close ties to the papacy. Head to the magnificent Aqueduct Park to take in the largest aqueducts of the Roman Empire. Gaze over aqueduct arches that stretch over miles and see one that supplies water to this day. Your tour ends with return to the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, which is located in the Piazza della Repubblica.

Well it's amazing to see how water was brought into the city of Rome. You can imagine the people walking your path . Took a tour with included the catacombs of St Sebastian. Was very interesting. It's a road , but the meaning was far more interesting . The chariot grooves are still in the road . Our tour guide was very knowledgeable !

Serena was personable, engaging, knowledgeable and connected well with each of the five of us in our half-day tour of the Aquaduct, St Sebastian Catacombs and Appian Way Tour, which I had booked through Viator.

This is what a guide should be - and not like the one both my husband and I ended up with for close to 4 hours for the Vatican pre-opening tour of the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum.

My bad though - as I expected to see skulls, bones and mummified remains in the Catacombs - instead - the St Sebastian Catacomb, for which we had a specialist Catacomb guide - was merely a warren of tunnels below the St Sebastian church, where Christians had been placed in their coffins, but with their remains since removed.

For the benefit of other travellers, the Capuchin Crypt located within Rome is the place to see bones and skulls, not where we went today.

Serena was knowledgeable and made the effort to point out interesting sights as we were driving out of the city, and on the way back.

The aquaduct that we visited I must admit though - was underwhelming as a 'sight', but Serena gave us a very informative talk on the history of these structures.

As a trained archaeologist, her specialty is in ancient coins. As a guide - I would be happy to have her lead us again if it could be arranged, as she was indeed excellent, and very pleasant.

Have always wanted to see the ancient Appian Way, and was not disappointed. Had considered a bike tour, but that goodness I decided against it. A very hot day, so we were happy with an air conditioned bus. Serena was a fantastic guide, thoroughly enjoyable day. Highly recommend.

This tour was the only one I found that included the aqueducts and a catacombs tour, and I was not disappointed! I really wanted to see the aqueducts, but they are outside of the city. Not only were the three stops well timed and awesome to see, but the drive was a nice surprise as well and was refreshing to get outside of downtown Rome. The St Sebastian catacombs included some amazingly preserved family crypts and was the favorite part of the tour for my family. There were only 5 of us on the tour. Highly recommend!

History buff or not, this tour was well worth it. Sarena was knowledgeable and fun. It was just the 3 of us and our drivers. It was another side of history that many either don’t realize or just don’t know. A great escape from the crowds too.

We ended up being the only 2 on this tour on a January Monday, and it was terrific.

The tour offered more than I’d anticipated, esp the Bascilica and the aqueducts were unexpected.

We had the great pleasure of hearing an orchestra practice at San Sebastiano church.

Serena was a very good guide, knowledgeable and engaged.

Well worth it.

In addition to the history, this tour was a lovely way to leave the center of Rome for a small-group van ride to the suburbs. First stop was a beautiful nature park with remnants of aqueducts. It was in this area, said our guide, that the Goths camped while besieging the city; they finally won by knocking down the aqueducts, thereby cutting off Rome's water supply.

From there we rode to the church of St. Sebastian, which has a network of catacombs underneath, which we toured with a guide at the church itself. The church is located on the Appian Way, which made my history-loving heart almost stop, to think of everything & everyone who has traveled that road for more than two centuries. We had a chance to walk a bit on the Way, & see the outside of the tomb of Cecilia Metella, too.

All in all, a wonderful, memorable tour, & one I highly recommend!

This tour is an excellent opportunity to get out of the downtown core to visit the aqueducts, Appian Way, and SAN Sebastian Catacombs. Serena was a wonderful tour guide...so knowledgeable about the history of Rome and very approachable. This is a well paced tour and gave us wonderful historical information. Well worth the trip...be sure to ask if you can get Serena as your guide, too.
